There is no definitive ranking of the best motorcycle movies: the genre ranges from outlaw-biker fiction and counterculture road trips to racing documentaries, youth films, comedy and cult horror. This list is an editorial selection, not a consensus ranking. Each film earns its place because motorcycles materially shape its story, characters, visual style or subject—not simply because a bike appears in the background.

How to choose a motorcycle movie

Motorcycle cinema is broader than the familiar image of a leather-clad gang riding into a small town. Film scholars Sandra Martinez and Antonio Sanjuán describe categories including biker and road movies, scooter and soft-bike films, rocker and mod stories, musicals, solitary riders, documentaries, biopics and animation. Their 2014 article discusses a database of more than 2,500 movies; that is the size of their research database, not a count of motorcycle films. Read the CINEJ Cinema Journal article.

The ranking below balances motorcycle centrality, genre, era and filmmaking significance. Entries marked Central make riding or motorcycle culture a defining part of the film; Substantial means it is important but shares focus with other themes; Notable means the connection is meaningful without dominating the whole film. The order is a guide, not a claim that one subgenre or era is objectively superior.

25 motorcycle movies to watch

  1. The Wild One (1953)

Type: Fiction; outlaw-biker drama. Motorcycle role: Central.

A motorcycle gang’s arrival unsettles a small town and brings its existing divisions into view. The BFI credits László Benedek’s film with popularizing awareness of postwar motorcycle gangs and establishing a recurring biker-movie setup: riders disrupt a town and expose tensions among its residents. It belongs near the start of any history-minded watchlist because that image became a durable screen trope. The BFI also reports that real bikers were cast and that some gang dialogue reportedly drew on conversations with extras. BFI’s history of biker movies.

  2. Easy Rider (1969)

Type: Fiction; counterculture road film. Motorcycle role: Central.

Wyatt and Billy ride across the United States in a film shaped by radical editing, outsider rock and encounters on the road. Dennis Hopper’s film is a defining American road movie as well as a biker film; the Criterion Collection highlights its editing, soundtrack and Jack Nicholson’s performance. AFI recognition includes selections on its original and 10th-anniversary lists of great American films, and recognition of “Born to Be Wild” among the greatest songs featured in a film—recognition, not an award win. Criterion’s Easy Rider page · AFI’s 10th-anniversary film list.

For viewers who want a physical edition, Criterion lists a Blu-ray special edition with a restored high-definition transfer supervised by cinematographer László Kovács, alternate soundtracks, commentaries and documentaries. Check the linked edition for current release and availability details.

  3. On Any Sunday (1971)

Type: Documentary; motorcycle sport. Motorcycle role: Central.

Steve McQueen features in this portrait of motorcycle competition and the people drawn to it. Martinez and Sanjuán call it perhaps the most important film about the motorcycle world in their historical survey. That is the authors’ assessment, rather than an objective consensus, but it captures why the film is essential viewing beyond biker-gang fiction.

  4. The Wild Angels (1966)

Type: Fiction; biker-gang film. Motorcycle role: Central.

Roger Corman’s biker film is part of the cycle of stories that made motorcycle gangs a prominent screen subject. The BFI places it within biker-film history alongside The Wild One and Psychomania. It is a useful follow-up for seeing how the genre developed after the earlier film’s small-town disruption template. BFI’s history of biker movies.

    Streets of Fire - Collector's Edition 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray [4K UHD]
    • Weight (Approximate): 0.22
    • Country of Origin: MX

Rather than treating motorcycles as symbols of rebellion, this documentary belongs to cinema’s record of motorcycle sport. Martinez and Sanjuán include it in their historical survey of motorcycle films. Pair it with On Any Sunday to explore how the subject shifts from a broad portrait of motorcycling to racing culture.

  6. Psychomania (1973)

Type: Fiction; cult horror. Motorcycle role: Central.

This British cult film brings motorcycle-gang imagery into supernatural horror. The BFI includes it in its account of biker-film history, making it a strong choice for viewers who want the genre’s stranger, more macabre edge rather than another road adventure. BFI’s history of biker movies.

  7. Dirt (1978)

Type: Documentary; motorcycle sport. Motorcycle role: Central.

Martinez and Sanjuán identify Dirt as part of motorcycle cinema’s sports-documentary history. Its inclusion helps show that films about riding are not limited to touring or road racing: competitive motorcycle culture has its own documentary tradition.

  8. Quadrophenia (1979)

Type: Fiction; youth and music film. Motorcycle role: Substantial.

This youth-subculture story belongs on a motorcycle list because scooter culture and the tensions around it are integral to its world. It expands the picture beyond outlaw bikers and illustrates the connection between two-wheelers, music, style and identity.

  9. Mad Max (1979)

Type: Fiction; action. Motorcycle role: Substantial.

Motorcycles are part of the film’s violent road culture and help define its kinetic action world. It offers a different kind of motorcycle cinema from the open-road journeys and racing documentaries: the bike belongs to a broader vision of danger, pursuit and social breakdown.

  10. The Loveless (1981)

Type: Fiction; biker drama. Motorcycle role: Central.

A later entry in the biker-film tradition, The Loveless is a useful pick for viewers interested in the genre’s atmosphere and subculture as much as its action. Its place in this list reflects the continuing appeal of stories built around riders and the communities they form.

  11. Faster (2003)

Type: Documentary; motorcycle racing. Motorcycle role: Central.

This modern racing-documentary selection gives the list a contemporary sport-focused entry. It belongs beside the earlier documentaries as part of a long-running screen interest in the demands and appeal of motorcycle competition.

  12. Biker Boyz (2003)

Type: Fiction; action and motorcycle culture. Motorcycle role: Central.

A popular-action take on motorcycle clubs and riding culture, Biker Boyz brings the genre into a more contemporary setting. It is a useful choice when the priority is club rivalries and high-energy entertainment rather than historical influence or documentary observation.

  13. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Type: Fiction; biographical road film. Motorcycle role: Substantial.

A journey by motorcycle provides the film’s early framework for travel and discovery. It makes the list for using the ride as a formative experience, rather than treating a bike as a prop or reducing the story to speed and spectacle.

  14. Torque (2004)

Type: Fiction; action. Motorcycle role: Central.

For a deliberately heightened, action-oriented choice, Torque puts motorcycles at the center of its entertainment. It offers a sharp contrast with the observational racing films and reflective road stories elsewhere on the list.

  15. The World’s Fastest Indian (2005)

Type: Fiction; biographical sports drama. Motorcycle role: Central.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This story of a rider pursuing a speed record belongs to the motorcycle-film tradition through its focus on ambition, machinery and competition. It is a natural pick for viewers who prefer an individual sporting quest to gang culture or ensemble road trips.

  16. Wild Hogs (2007)

Type: Fiction; road comedy. Motorcycle role: Central.

A comic road-trip option, Wild Hogs uses a group ride as its premise and source of mishaps. Its lighter tone helps make the list more representative of motorcycle movies than a slate consisting entirely of outlaw dramas and serious racing films.

  17. One Week (2008)

Type: Fiction; road drama. Motorcycle role: Central.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A motorcycle journey gives this road film its shape. It is a quieter alternative to high-speed action: the appeal is the open road as a setting for personal reflection and change.

  18. TT3D: Closer to the Edge (2011)

Type: Documentary; motorcycle racing. Motorcycle role: Central.

This later documentary selection focuses the list on motorcycle sport and its distinctive racing world. Choose it when the draw is the competition itself rather than fictional bikers or a rider’s personal road journey.

  19. The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)

Type: Fiction; road and subculture film. Motorcycle role: Central.

A woman’s ride makes this an important change of perspective in a list often dominated by male biker stories. Its place also reflects the broader range of motorcycle-related film categories identified by Martinez and Sanjuán.

  20. Scorpio Rising (1963)

Type: Experimental short; subculture. Motorcycle role: Notable.

This experimental film brings motorcycle imagery into a formally adventurous portrait of subculture. It earns a place for showing that motorcycle cinema can work through visual style and cultural symbols, not only conventional plot.

  21. Stone (1974)

Type: Fiction; biker and crime film. Motorcycle role: Central.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This Australian biker-film selection widens the list’s geographic reach and brings a crime-story angle to the genre. It is a useful counterpoint to the best-known American outlaw-biker films.

  22. The Motorcycle Diaries (2004)

Type: Fiction; road film. Motorcycle role: Substantial.

Its inclusion here highlights the road-film strand of motorcycle cinema: the vehicle is a means of crossing distance and encountering a wider world, rather than merely a badge of gang identity.

  23. Continental Circus (1972)

Type: Documentary; racing. Motorcycle role: Central.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For viewers exploring the documentary side of the subject, this film’s place in the historical survey makes it a key companion to other sport-focused titles on the list.

  24. Easy Rider (1969)

Type: Fiction; road film. Motorcycle role: Central.

The film’s place in American road cinema and its outsider sensibility make it a natural closing recommendation for a list spanning the many meanings riders and motorcycles have carried on screen.

Choose by mood and motorcycle connection

  • For biker-film history: Start with The Wild One, then compare it with The Wild Angels and Psychomania.
  • For the American counterculture road movie: Watch Easy Rider.
  • For motorcycle sport: Begin with On Any Sunday; Martinez and Sanjuán also discuss Continental Circus and Dirt.
  • For music and youth culture: Choose Quadrophenia or The Girl on a Motorcycle.
  • For a different tone: Try the horror of Psychomania, the road comedy of Wild Hogs or the stylized action of Torque.

Why motorcycle films are more than biker stories

Motorcycles can serve as the subject of a sport documentary, the means of a personal journey, a marker of youth identity or the visual language of a counterculture film. Martinez and Sanjuán’s taxonomy makes that range explicit, while the BFI’s account of biker movies shows how one influential trope—the gang arriving in a small town—became only one branch of a much larger screen tradition. The strongest watchlist therefore mixes films where bikes are the point with films where riding changes how the story moves or what it means.
