Four useful ways to understand GMC’s Square Body era are the Sierra-trim pickup, the one-ton dually, the crew-cab pickup and the full-size Jimmy. They represent different body styles and configurations—not a verified ranking of the four most popular trucks. “Square Body” is an enthusiast nickname for a GM generation, not a complete GMC model name.
What years are GMC Square Body trucks?
“Square Body” commonly refers to GM’s truck generation introduced for 1973. Chevrolet’s official history describes the shared generation as spanning the 1970s and 1980s and identifies the crew cab and dually as 1973 introductions. GMC pickup naming makes a single end date misleading: Classic Industries separates the pickup generations into 1973–1986 C/K and 1987–1991 R/V. Those dates apply to the catalog’s pickup identification, not every GMC body line; GMC square-bodied vehicles did not all end together.
For identification, treat the nickname, series badge, body style and trim as separate clues. A GMC could be a Square Body by generation, a 1500, 2500 or 3500 by series, a pickup or Jimmy by body line, and Sierra or another name by trim.
Four iconic GMC Square Body archetypes
These four picks show the range of the line. Compare a specific truck by its year, series, cab or body, drivetrain and trim rather than assuming all examples shared the same equipment or capability.

1. Sierra-trim pickup
The Sierra is a natural place to start because the name changed roles over time. In the early Square Body period, Sierra-related names were trims; Sierra later became the GMC pickup model name. GM Authority’s historical overview describes a four-tier 1973 trim walk that included Sierra and Sierra Grande. The trim labels were revised from 1975, with names including High Sierra and Sierra Classic in later years. The badge should therefore be read in the context of its model year, not as a timeless description of one equipment package.
Sierra vs. Sierra Grande: both were trim names in the early trim hierarchy, but their exact position and equipment should be checked against the brochure for the truck’s year. The available history does not establish a single equipment list that applies across the entire generation.

2. One-ton dually pickup
The dually stands out immediately: it is a one-ton pickup configured with dual rear wheels. Chevrolet’s official history identifies the dually’s debut with the 1973 generation, and the Classic Industries catalog likewise notes dual-rear-wheel availability on one-ton pickups in its 1973 overview. This makes the dually a defining visual and capability archetype, but not a shortcut to a specific payload or towing figure. Those ratings depend on the year and vehicle configuration; use the applicable factory rating rather than a general Square Body estimate.
3. Crew-cab pickup
The crew cab brought a larger passenger compartment to the pickup range. Both Chevrolet’s generation history and the Classic Industries catalog place its introduction in 1973. The catalog describes a 3+3 seating or rear-cab storage choice. That milestone does not mean every GMC series, engine or drivetrain was offered with an identical crew-cab setup, so verify the exact truck rather than transferring one configuration’s details to another.

4. Full-size Jimmy
The GMC Jimmy belongs in the same broad Square Body story as the pickups, but it is an SUV rather than a pickup cab-and-bed configuration. Period GMC literature includes the Jimmy in the light-duty line. A surfaced excerpt from the 1973 GMC Light Duty Trucks brochure says full-time four-wheel drive applied to certain V8/automatic Jimmy configurations when four-wheel drive was ordered. That is a limited, configuration-specific detail—not a claim about every Jimmy or every model year.
What do 1500, 2500 and 3500 mean on a classic GMC?
These numbers identify different series or load classes within the pickup range. They are useful for distinguishing a lighter-duty truck from heavier-duty versions, but the badge alone does not establish the vehicle’s actual payload or towing rating. Those depend on the exact year and configuration. A one-ton dually is an example of a heavy-duty configuration, not a universal rating for every truck carrying a particular badge.

How to identify a GMC Square Body accurately
- Establish the model year and body line. Separate pickup from Jimmy; pickup generation dates do not automatically apply to the SUV.
- Read the series badge. Record whether it is a 1500, 2500 or 3500, where applicable, without treating the number as a complete rating.
- Identify the cab, bed and rear-wheel setup. Note regular or crew cab, bed configuration and whether the rear axle has dual wheels.
- Record drivetrain and powertrain details. Two- or four-wheel drive, engine and transmission can change what a period brochure says about availability and equipment.
- Interpret trim names by year. Sierra, Sierra Grande, High Sierra and Sierra Classic shifted across model years; compare the badge with the appropriate year’s literature.
For restoration parts, search by the truck’s model year, series, cab or body, bed and drivetrain where known. Classic Industries’ 2025 truck catalog identifies its historical pickup sections as 1973–1986 C/K and 1987–1991 R/V, a useful starting point for catalog navigation—not proof that a particular part fits every truck in those ranges.
Where to verify year-specific details
GM Heritage Archive & Special Collections describes holdings that include historical catalogs, brochures, engineering and service information, and vehicle documentation. Those original records are the right place to check details such as trim equipment, engine availability, body changes and factory ratings for an individual year and configuration.
