The redesigned 2027 Volkswagen Atlas brings new bodywork and a reworked cabin, plus a revised 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 282 hp and 258 lb-ft. Volkswagen says the US model is expected in fall 2026; its teaser lists a starting MSRP of $41,610, figures that may change before arrival.
What is new about the 2027 Atlas?
This is a second-generation redesign, not simply an engine update. Volkswagen’s US teaser presents an all-new Atlas with new sheetmetal, while Car and Driver reports that the body is roughly one inch longer than before; width, height and wheelbase remain unchanged. The overall shape is more upright and boxy, with redesigned front and rear lighting and available illuminated details.
Volkswagen’s teaser quotes Petar Danilovic, SVP of Product Marketing & Strategy at Volkswagen Group of America, describing the design: “With one strong architectural statement, everything flows with purpose… [and] creates a more confident driving experience.”
What engine does the 2027 Atlas have?
The Atlas gets a revised 2.0-liter EA888 evo5 direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Volkswagen lists 282 hp; Volkswagen Mexico specifies 258 lb-ft of torque. Car and Driver reports that the new engine adds 13 hp but gives up 15 lb-ft compared with the outgoing engine, which made 273 lb-ft. More horsepower does not mean more torque: the published figures show a modest power increase alongside a torque decrease.

Fuel economy: US EPA estimates and Canadian figures
Car and Driver reports the following EPA estimates for US models. The drivetrain distinction matters: the reported FWD figures are not the same as the AWD figures.

Volkswagen Canada lists estimated consumption of 11.4 L/100 km city, 8.4 L/100 km highway and 10.0 L/100 km combined. These are Canadian-market figures in Canadian units; they should not be treated as a conversion of the US EPA estimates.

What does the redesigned cabin add?
Volkswagen describes a reworked interior with soft-touch surfaces and available real-wood decor. The Canadian model page lists a standard 12.9-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, with a 15-inch infotainment display and multifunction rotary dial available. Those screen sizes and equipment descriptions are market- and trim-specific, not a promise that every US Atlas receives the same configuration.
What technology and driver assistance are announced?
Volkswagen’s US teaser highlights a front-center airbag, expanded IQ.DRIVE with hands-on semi-automated capability, dual wireless charging and an available generative AI voice assistant. Availability may vary by trim. Volkswagen Mexico also describes Travel Assist and Emergency Assist for its market; those local specifications should not be assumed for US versions without US trim details.

Seating, drivetrain and towing depend on market
Volkswagen Canada lists six- or seven-seat layouts and says 4MOTION all-wheel drive is standard there. In the US, Car and Driver reports front-wheel drive as standard and AWD as optional. Both Volkswagen Canada and Car and Driver report a 5,000-pound towing rating, but buyers should confirm the rating and required equipment for the specific market and trim.
Is a hybrid Atlas coming?
Volkswagen Mexico says a hybrid is planned for a mid-cycle update, but it does not give a launch date or detailed configuration. That statement is a manufacturer plan, not confirmation of a dated US launch or US-market specifications.
