What is new about the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid?
Subaru announced the Forester Wilderness Hybrid on April 1, 2026, describing it as the first Subaru Wilderness model with a hybrid powertrain. It combines the Wilderness trim’s off-road-focused equipment with a gasoline-electric system. Subaru’s announcement and vehicle details are available from Subaru of America.
How much power does it make?
Subaru specifies a combined output of 194 horsepower from an Atkinson/Miller-cycle 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine, a high-capacity lithium-ion battery and electric motors in a series-parallel hybrid configuration. Subaru lists 180 horsepower for the gas-powered 2027 Forester Wilderness, making the announced hybrid figure 14 horsepower higher. Those are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish how the vehicles compare in acceleration or other real-world performance.
How much better is fuel economy, and what is the range?
Subaru claims the hybrid delivers “up to 25% better fuel economy” than the gas-only Forester Wilderness and estimates 481 miles per tank on its official Forester Wilderness Hybrid page. Both figures come from Subaru, not independent testing. The cited materials do not provide an EPA-rated mpg figure or establish real-world fuel economy, and the estimated range is not a guaranteed distance.

What off-road equipment does it have?
The Wilderness Hybrid retains 9.3 inches of ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, upgraded suspension and all-terrain tires. Its Lineartronic CVT works with X-MODE Dual-Mode, including Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings and Hill Descent Control. Subaru specifies Yokohama Geolandar tires on Wilderness-exclusive 17-inch matte-black wheels.
Subaru lists approach, breakover and departure angles of 23.5, 20.6 and 25.5 degrees, respectively. These are specifications rather than the results of an independent trail test. For context, Subaru lists 8.7 inches of ground clearance for the standard Forester Hybrid, versus 9.3 inches for the Wilderness Hybrid.

How much cargo space and roof-rail capacity does it offer?
Subaru lists 27.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seats and more than 69 cubic feet with the seats folded, and says the hybrid components do not reduce cargo space. The raised ladder-type roof rails have an 800-pound static load rating. That is a static rating; Subaru’s announcement does not state a dynamic driving-load limit.
How much does it cost?
Subaru announced a $40,495 MSRP for the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid on September 17, 2026. The comparison prices below are Subaru’s announced MSRPs; destination and delivery are listed separately and may vary in some states. They are not dealer-specific quotes. Subaru’s pricing announcement also said 2027 Foresters would arrive at U.S. retailers later in fall 2026.

What cabin technology and safety equipment is listed?
Subaru lists an 11.6-inch multimedia system with navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with Apple Maps integration. Other listed equipment includes gray textured StarTex seating, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with a 576-watt-equivalent amplifier, a power rear gate, all-weather mats, a cargo-area protector and a heated steering wheel.
Listed EyeSight features include Automatic Emergency Steering, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Blind-Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, and Emergency Stop Assist. These are equipment descriptions from Subaru, not an independent assessment of driver-assistance performance.

What should buyers verify before choosing it?
- Final fuel-economy ratings: The cited Subaru materials do not establish EPA mpg figures or independent real-world results.
- Towing capacity: Subaru lists 3,500 pounds for the gas Wilderness, but the cited announcement does not give a towing rating for the Wilderness Hybrid. Do not assume the gas model’s figure applies.
- Availability: Subaru announced expected retailer arrival later in fall 2026; that timing does not confirm inventory at a particular dealer.
- Accessories and roof loads: Confirm exact model-year fitment for replacement parts and accessories. The 800-pound roof-rail figure is static, not a stated limit for driving with a load.
