The 2027 BMW X5 spy photos point to a fifth-generation SUV with Neue Klasse-inspired styling, but the quad exhausts do not prove the prototype is the gasoline M60. BMW has confirmed an X5 M60e plug-in hybrid with four exhaust outlets; a separate spy report describes a likely gasoline M Performance prototype whose final name, engine and output remain unconfirmed.
What the spy photos suggest—and what they cannot confirm
BMWBLOG reported on July 9, 2026, that a prototype had quad exhaust outlets and no visible charging port, interpreting it as a gasoline M Performance version and suggesting the name X5 M60. The report said the official name and output were not known. An earlier BMWBLOG report floated a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, but that remains speculation, not a confirmed specification. BMWBLOG’s July 2026 spy report and its February 2026 report do not establish the prototype’s final identity or powertrain.
The absence of a visible charging port in a spy image is an observation, not conclusive proof of a production specification. More importantly, four exhaust outlets are not a reliable identifier: BMW’s confirmed X5 M60e plug-in hybrid also has a four-outlet exhaust integrated into its M-specific rear bumper.
BMW’s confirmed X5 M60e is a plug-in hybrid
BMW M identifies the X5 M60e xDrive as a plug-in hybrid pairing a turbocharged inline-six with an electric motor. Its published system output is 450 kW (612 PS) and 800 Nm, with a manufacturer-claimed 0–100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed. BMW M gives an electric range of up to 98 km; BMW Germany lists a provisional WLTP range of 81–98 km. That confirmed plug-in hybrid is distinct from the gasoline M Performance vehicle inferred by BMWBLOG. BMW has not confirmed the latter’s name, engine or output in the cited material, so it is not possible to make an official specifications comparison between the two.
Neue Klasse design and technology across the fifth-generation X5
BMW calls the new vehicle the fifth-generation X5 and says it incorporates technologies from the Neue Klasse. The announced family is unusually broad: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions are planned, with hydrogen fuel-cell power to follow at a later stage. BMW Development Board member Dr. Joachim Post described the approach this way: “And now the latest generation also benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest possible range of drive systems.”

BMW’s design description calls out an upright front end, vertically aligned kidney Iconic Glow lighting, new “double-X” light icons and Winglet door handles. Inside, the company highlights Panoramic iDrive and BMW Operating System X. These are characteristics of the new X5 family; they do not by themselves identify the powertrain of a particular camouflaged prototype. Launch timing depends on the powertrain
BMW says production of the fifth-generation X5 began at Plant Spartanburg in August 2026. The first variants are scheduled to reach markets in late November 2026, while electric and plug-in-hybrid versions are scheduled for early 2027. Separately, BMW Germany lists October 8, 2026, as the opening date for M60e orders in Germany. That ordering date is not a global availability date, and the planned launch windows are variant-specific rather than a single date for every X5.
