The 2026 Toyota C-HR is a major departure from the earlier U.S. compact crossover: it is now a battery-electric vehicle with standard all-wheel drive. Toyota lists 338 combined system horsepower and EPA-estimated range of 287 miles for SE or 273 miles for XSE. Those changes make the new C-HR a very different proposition, but the available figures do not prove it is better than its predecessor in every respect.
What changed for the 2026 Toyota C-HR?
Toyota’s U.S. 2026 C-HR is an all-new battery-electric model, not a conventional gasoline compact crossover. It uses dual motors and standard electronic all-wheel drive, with 338 net combined system horsepower, according to Toyota’s February 2026 production-model announcement and its current C-HR model page.
That is a change in powertrain and ownership routine, not just a new trim or styling update. Drivers move from refueling a gasoline vehicle to charging an EV, and comparisons of operating range need to distinguish electric miles per charge from gasoline fuel economy.
How far does it go, and what does it cost?

These are Toyota’s EPA-estimated total-range figures for the 2026 production model, not guaranteed trip distances; weather, speed, terrain, and other driving conditions affect range. Toyota’s preliminary May 2025 announcement said “up to 290 miles,” but its later production announcement lists the more specific 287-mile SE and 273-mile XSE estimates. For current specifications, the production-model figures are the relevant ones.

Toyota announced a starting MSRP of $37,000, excluding dealer processing and handling charges. That is the published starting price in the February 2026 announcement; check a local dealer for current pricing, inventory, and any applicable charges.
What charging does the C-HR support?
The C-HR has a NACS charge port. Toyota says it includes adapters for J1772 AC charging and CCS1 DC fast charging, as well as a portable dual-voltage 120V/240V charging cable. It can use home Level 1 or Level 2 charging and compatible public Level 2 stations or DC fast chargers, including compatible Tesla Superchargers. Toyota’s time estimates below are manufacturer estimates under ideal conditions. Actual charging time varies with battery state, charger capability, temperature, and accessory use; cold weather can substantially lengthen DC fast charging. Battery preconditioning is intended to help with fast charging in cold conditions.

A home Level 2 charger is an option, not a requirement: Toyota includes a portable cable, and whether it meets a household’s needs depends on the available electrical outlet and desired recharge time. Toyota also notes that app-based station finding, charging initiation and payment, and Plug & Charge features may require an active Remote Connect trial or subscription.

What does one independent road test suggest about efficiency?
In an October 1, 2026 road test of one 2026 C-HR XSE, Tom’s Guide reported driving 172 miles over a week and measuring average efficiency of 4.7 miles per kilowatt-hour. The outlet also reported 4 mi/kWh on a highway outing and 6 mi/kWh in city driving. These are that publication’s measurements from one vehicle and test routine, not Toyota ratings or a promise of typical results.
The same test reported Level 1 replenishment at 3.51 miles per hour and 17 miles restored over 4.85 hours. That result illustrates why Level 1 is better suited to slow replenishment than quick turnarounds; household charging performance will depend on the outlet, vehicle state, and conditions.

What warranty and maintenance coverage does Toyota list?
Toyota says the EV component warranty, including the traction battery, is eight years or 100,000 miles. ToyotaCare maintenance is listed as two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. Does the new C-HR put the previous model to shame?
As an opinion about the change in direction, the phrase captures how dramatically Toyota has repositioned the U.S. C-HR: the 2026 model is electric, standard-AWD, and substantially more powerful on paper than the image of a conventional compact crossover suggests. But that is not a complete generational comparison.

A fair verdict would need the earlier U.S. C-HR’s matched model-year and trim data for purchase price, fuel economy, acceleration, passenger and cargo practicality, standard equipment, safety systems, and ownership costs. Electric range and gasoline fuel economy are different measures, and comparisons with hybrid C-HRs sold in other markets would not establish how the new U.S. model compares with its U.S. predecessor. Without those like-for-like baselines, the evidence supports “dramatically different,” not a blanket claim that the new vehicle is superior in every meaningful way.
