The 2027 BMW M3 and M4 share the same published power and acceleration figures in equivalent trims; the main distinction is body style: a four-door sedan versus a coupe. The M3 starts at $79,300 in the U.S., while the M4 starts at $82,200. Both offer a six-speed manual in base form, while Competition versions are automatic-only and can be configured with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive.
At a glance: M3 vs. M4
| 2027 U.S. model | Body style | Power | BMW 0–60 mph claim | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M3 Sedan | Four-door sedan | 473 hp | 4.1 seconds | $79,300 |
| M3 Competition Sedan | Four-door sedan | 503 hp | 3.8 seconds | $83,500 |
| M3 Competition xDrive Sedan | Four-door sedan | 523 hp | 3.4 seconds | $88,600 |
| M4 Coupe | Two-door coupe | 473 hp | 4.1 seconds | $82,200 |
| M4 Competition Coupe | Two-door coupe | 503 hp | 3.8 seconds | $86,600 |
| M4 Competition xDrive Coupe | Two-door coupe | 523 hp | 3.4 seconds | $91,700 |
BMW lists these as preliminary manufacturer test results, not independent instrumented comparisons; actual acceleration can vary with vehicle specification, road and environmental conditions, testing procedures, and driving style. Starting MSRPs are not dealer quotes or out-the-door totals and may change. See the BMW USA 2027 M3 specifications and BMW USA 2027 M4 specifications.
Performance: matching figures by trim
For each corresponding trim level, BMW publishes the same horsepower and 0–60 mph time for the M3 and M4. The choice between them does not buy a different published acceleration claim; stepping up the trim changes output and, in the xDrive version, drivetrain.
- Base: 473 hp and a BMW-claimed 4.1 seconds to 60 mph.
- Competition, rear-wheel drive: 503 hp and 3.8 seconds.
- Competition xDrive: 523 hp and 3.4 seconds.
BMW specifies the base M3’s 2,993 cc six-cylinder gasoline engine at 473 bhp at 6,250 rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque from 2,650 to 6,130 rpm. The M3 Competition is listed at 503 bhp and 479 lb-ft; the Competition xDrive is listed at 523 bhp and 479 lb-ft. These technical figures are for the M3 configurations; the shared published headline horsepower and acceleration figures are not a substitute for a complete side-by-side engine test.

Transmission and drivetrain: manual or xDrive?
Base M3 and M4
Both base models pair a six-speed manual transmission with rear-wheel drive. If a manual is essential, the base M3 Sedan or M4 Coupe is the configuration to compare.
Competition models
Competition versions use an eight-speed M Sport transmission. The standard Competition configuration is rear-wheel drive; Competition xDrive adds all-wheel drive. BMW describes M xDrive as a performance-oriented system with adjustable power-distribution modes, so drivetrain selection is a distinct choice from the engine-output step. More details are on BMW’s M3 model page and M4 model page.

Price: what the body-style choice costs
BMW’s listed starting MSRP for the M4 is higher than that of the corresponding M3 in all three trim pairings. The gaps below are calculated from those listed U.S. starting MSRPs:
| Comparable trim | M3 starting MSRP | M4 starting MSRP | M4 difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | $79,300 | $82,200 | $2,900 more |
| Competition, rear-wheel drive | $83,500 | $86,600 | $3,100 more |
| Competition xDrive | $88,600 | $91,700 | $3,100 more |
These figures are starting MSRPs, not final purchase prices; taxes, title, license, registration, dealer pricing, and market adjustments can change what a buyer pays. Verify current trim availability and pricing with BMW or a dealer before making a purchase decision.

Size and everyday practicality
BMW’s published exterior measurements show the M3 is longer and taller, while the M4 is wider. That can help frame a parking-space or garage-fit comparison, but dimensions alone do not establish visibility, passenger comfort, or ease of access.
| Published dimension | 2027 M3 Sedan | 2027 M4 Coupe |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 189.1 in | 182.9 in |
| Width | 74.3 in | 76.0 in |
| Height | 56.6 in | 54.3 in |
| Wheelbase | 112.5 in | not stated on the cited BMW M4 page |
| Cargo capacity | not stated on the cited BMW M3 page | up to 15.5 cu. ft., per BMW’s M4 FAQ |
The M3’s listed curb weights are 3,840 lb for the base model, 3,891 lb for Competition, and 3,990 lb for Competition xDrive. BMW’s cited M4 material gives up to 15.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity, but does not provide a directly comparable M3 cargo figure here. Do not infer that the sedan necessarily has a larger or more usable trunk from body style alone.

Which should you choose?
Choose the M3 if a sedan fits your needs
The M3 is the four-door option, and it costs less at each comparable starting trim in BMW’s published U.S. pricing. If passenger access, the sedan form, or the lower starting MSRP matters most, begin with the M3 configuration that matches your transmission and drivetrain priorities.
Choose the M4 if you want the coupe body
The M4 is the coupe, and BMW lists it as shorter, wider, and lower than the M3. Its matching trim has the same published power and acceleration claim as the M3 counterpart, but carries a higher starting MSRP. Inspect the actual car and assess access and space for your own needs rather than assuming the specification sheet predicts comfort.
Quick Recap
Choose by configuration, not just badge
- For a manual: compare the base rear-wheel-drive M3 and M4.
- For the Competition power step with rear-wheel drive: compare the 503-hp versions.
- For all-wheel drive: compare the 523-hp Competition xDrive versions.
- For driving feel, ride comfort, handling, fuel economy, tire costs, reliability, insurance, or resale value: seek independent evidence and take a test drive. The cited manufacturer specifications do not settle those ownership and driving questions.
