A model year alone cannot tell you whether a particular car has an open recall or is mechanically sound.
1. Confirm the exact car and get its records
F10 refers to the 5 Series sedan. Before viewing one, ask the seller for its VIN, build date, model year, engine, drivetrain and mileage. Match the VIN on the car to the paperwork, and confirm that the advertised specification agrees with the documents.
Request maintenance invoices and a continuous service history, along with documentation for recall or campaign repairs. Check the seller’s account against the records rather than relying on a verbal assurance. 2. Check recalls by VIN
Use the recall lookup for the car’s market and enter its VIN. BMW USA says owners can check for open recalls at BMW’s recall page; it also says authorized BMW Center recall repairs are free. Ask the seller for proof of completed work, and confirm any uncertainty with BMW or the relevant authority in the car’s market.

Historical campaign descriptions are not a substitute for this lookup. For example, a 2016 BMW of North America filing hosted by NHTSA covered an estimated 51,710 F10 5 Series vehicles in a US fuel-pump campaign. It identified 2011–2012 model years and production from July 2010 through June 2011 as potentially affected. The filing described possible fuel odor, fuel leakage during refueling or cornering, no-start or stalling if a connector was damaged, and fuel-pump replacement. That figure is the campaign’s potentially affected population—not the number of cars still unrepaired, nor proof that every car in those model years is affected. Carbuyer’s UK guide also describes historical campaigns involving cars built September 2009–November 2011 and a small group built in September–October 2016. Those dates do not establish whether a specific car is affected, particularly across different markets; use the VIN-specific result.

3. Inspect the car before starting it
If possible, ask the seller to leave the engine cold before you arrive. On the initial walk-around, check the following without trying to diagnose a fault from a single sign:
- Body and paint: Look for inconsistent paint, damaged panels and signs of impact repair.
- Lights: Check the headlamps and all other fitted exterior lighting for damage and correct operation.
- Tyres and wheels: Check tread and wear across each tyre, plus sidewall damage or bulges. Look for bent, cracked or impact-damaged wheels.
- Brakes: Inspect pads and discs for wear; ask the independent shop to assess their condition.
- Cold start: Observe warning lamps, idle quality, smoke, visible leaks and unusual noises. These are prompts for further assessment, not diagnoses on their own.
Carbuyer notes that lighting, tyres, brakes and wheel repairs or replacements can be expensive. Treat the condition of the individual car as the evidence; wheel size or a general comment about ride comfort does not establish a fault.

4. Check the cabin, electronics and road manners
Stationary checks
Operate the iDrive system, instruments, climate equipment, windows and controls, along with any other fitted features you expect to use. Note warning messages, functions that do not work and faults that persist after restarting the car.
Road test
With the seller’s permission and in a safe setting, test normal and firmer acceleration, braking, steering and the transmission at low and road speeds. Listen for abnormal noises and knocks, and pay attention to how the car rides over uneven pavement. Check that warning lights do not appear and that controls continue to work.

Stop the test if you notice a fuel smell, a serious warning, severe noise or unsafe behavior. Raise every anomaly with the inspector instead of treating a short drive as a diagnosis. These checks are practical prompts from secondary buying guidance, not proof that any one symptom is a common F10 defect.

Have a qualified, BMW-competent independent shop inspect the actual car before you commit. Ask for a diagnostic scan and a written report. The scan can help identify faults, but a clean result is not proof of mechanical health.

Ask the shop to assess:
- Diagnostic codes and relevant vehicle systems.
- Engine and cooling components, including visible fluid or coolant leaks.
- Transmission operation and signs of problems during the road test.
- Suspension, steering and any knocks or unusual noises.
- Tyres, wheels, brake pads and discs.
- Electrical functions, instruments, iDrive and other fitted equipment.
Request an estimate for work that is urgent or needed soon. A BMW-compatible OBD-II scanner can be an optional screening aid if you already have one, but confirm that it covers the relevant BMW systems; it does not replace a professional inspection.
6. Compare cars on evidence, not a blanket reliability ranking
Compare candidate F10s using the same evidence for each one. The available sources do not establish a dependable engine-by-engine reliability ranking across markets, so no model year or engine should be treated as universally best.

Proceed only when you can establish the car’s identity, recall status and condition well enough to make an informed decision. If the seller will not provide records or allow a proper inspection, or if safety-related concerns remain unresolved, be prepared to walk away.
How much do owner-survey rankings tell you?
Carbuyer reported that the 5 Series placed 53rd of 150 cars in its 2016 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, with category placements of 34th for build quality, 31st for performance and 40th for seat comfort. These are historical survey rankings, not current reliability statistics or a prediction about the F10 you are considering.
