Houston Woman Sues Tesla After Cybertruck Allegedly Misses Overpass Curve and Hits Barrier

A Houston Cybertruck owner alleges Tesla’s supervised driver-assistance system missed an overpass curve on August 18, 2025. The lawsuit, injuries, video evidence and Tesla’s reported driver-causation defense explained.

Justine Saint Amour alleges that her Tesla Cybertruck’s supervised driver-assistance system failed to follow a right-hand curve on Houston’s Interstate 69 Eastex Freeway on August 18, 2025. The truck crossed traffic-control cones and struck a concrete barrier on a Y-shaped overpass interchange. She says she tried to take control but had too little time to avoid the crash. Her Harris County lawsuit seeks more than $1 million.

What happened on the Houston overpass

Saint Amour was driving near the 256 Eastex Park and Ride when the Cybertruck approached a split in the roadway. According to her complaint and published accounts, the route curved right, but the truck continued forward, crossed or struck cones and hit the side barrier separating the ramp from a drop toward the freeway below. The vehicle apparently stopped at the barrier; available descriptions do not establish that it left the overpass or fell from a bridge. KPRC/Click2Houston and CarComplaints report that dashcam footage captured the approach and impact.

Saint Amour says she disengaged the system and attempted to regain control. The lawsuit alleges the handoff came too late to prevent the collision.

Autopilot or Full Self-Driving?

Reports do not use one consistent name for the feature. KPRC describes the Cybertruck as operating on Autopilot, while other coverage and the lawsuit’s descriptions refer to Full Self-Driving (FSD) or use the terms together. That discrepancy matters because the exact software mode, version and vehicle data could affect the technical and legal analysis. The available reporting does not independently establish which mode was active at every second.

Neither label means a driverless vehicle. Tesla describes these functions as supervised driver assistance: the human must watch the road, remain ready to steer or brake and follow the system’s instructions. Calling the truck “autonomous” or saying it was legally driving itself would overstate what is established.

What Saint Amour says the system did

The complaint portrays a path-planning or perception failure at a difficult location: a Y-shaped interchange with a curve, cones, temporary roadway geometry and a concrete barrier. It alleges the system directed the Cybertruck toward the barrier instead of completing the turn and that the driver could not intervene quickly enough.

Reported injuries include neck, shoulder and lower-back injuries, a wrist injury, numbness and weakness in the right hand, two herniated discs in the lower back, a herniated neck disc and sprained wrist tendons. Those are allegations in the lawsuit; the published accounts do not independently verify her medical records. She seeks more than $1 million, a pleaded demand rather than an award. Futurism’s report syndicated by Yahoo describes the injury claims.

The lawsuit’s product-liability allegations

Saint Amour accuses Tesla of negligence and defective design, and alleges failures involving testing, inspection, repair, recalls, warnings and instructions. The complaint reportedly also alleges that:

  • the Cybertruck lacked effective automatic emergency braking for the hazard she describes;
  • Tesla should have used LiDAR or other redundant sensing systems;
  • Tesla failed to warn drivers about limitations and abrupt failures;
  • marketing presented FSD as more like self-driving than supervised assistance; and
  • company leadership, including Elon Musk, was involved in design or management decisions relevant to the claims.

These are theories pleaded by the plaintiff, not findings that Tesla’s design was defective or that LiDAR would have prevented this particular crash. Automatic emergency braking is also not designed to solve every steering, lane-selection or path-planning error.

Tesla’s reported response

Later procedural reporting says Tesla demanded a jury trial and disputed that a defect caused the collision, arguing that the incident was attributable to the driver. That position puts comparative fault, supervision and the timing of any attempted intervention at the center of the case. A jury demand is a procedural request, not an admission or a ruling.

The Houston Chronicle reported that Tesla representatives did not respond to its requests for comment at the time. The available accounts do not provide a detailed, point-by-point Tesla statement addressing every allegation. CarComplaints’ procedural report summarizes the reported defense.

What the dashcam video can—and cannot—show

Video may establish the truck’s visible speed, trajectory, approach to the interchange, apparent failure to follow the curve, the driver’s visible intervention and the impact. FOX 7 Austin reported on the footage and the plaintiff’s attorney’s characterization of it.

Video alone cannot determine:

  • the exact software version or whether Autopilot, FSD or another mode was active throughout;
  • whether the driver applied steering, accelerator or brake input;
  • how cones, markings, construction, lighting, maps or sensor interpretation affected the system;
  • whether a hardware or software defect existed; or
  • whether Tesla’s warnings were legally inadequate.

Those questions would require authenticated original footage, vehicle logs, software records, crash reconstruction and evidence about the road and medical treatment.

Why this case matters beyond one crash

Performance at complex roadway geometry

The allegations test whether a supervised system can reliably handle a highway split where temporary cones and a barrier change the apparent path. One incident cannot establish fleet-wide performance, but it raises a concrete question about how the system behaves when lane geometry is ambiguous and the consequence of a wrong path is severe.

The handoff problem

Supervision rules place responsibility on the driver even when the system appears confident. If a vehicle turns toward a barrier near an overpass, the practical time to recognize the failure, disengage automation and steer clear may be far shorter than the time implied by ordinary warnings. Whether Saint Amour had a reasonable opportunity to intervene is disputed.

Camera-only perception and redundancy

The complaint attacks Tesla’s reliance on cameras without LiDAR or other backup sensing. That is a design-policy dispute, not proof that another sensor would have changed this event. Investigators would still need to identify the actual failure mechanism.

Marketing and consumer expectations

The case also separates technical cause from consumer understanding. A jury could consider whether Tesla’s names, demonstrations or public claims encouraged drivers to expect more autonomy than the system provides, even if the vehicle’s immediate behavior involved driver input or road conditions.

What remains unknown

  • the Cybertruck’s confirmed model year and vehicle records;
  • the court-confirmed filing date and complete docket history;
  • the precise active driving mode and software version;
  • steering, pedal and driver-monitoring inputs immediately before impact;
  • vehicle logs, mapping data, road-construction details and sensor diagnostics;
  • independent medical documentation and the long-term extent of the injuries; and
  • whether the case will settle, be dismissed in part, proceed through discovery or reach trial.

Later reports mention an infant in the vehicle, but that detail is not consistent across the initial accounts and should be treated as attributed reporting rather than an established fact.

What Tesla drivers should take from the allegations

Owners should treat Autopilot and FSD as supervised assistance, not a substitute for active driving. Keep attention on the roadway, be prepared for an abrupt path error and do not assume that a system’s confident steering means it has correctly understood a curve, cone pattern or ramp split. Tesla’s current feature descriptions and support materials are available through its Full Self-Driving, Support and Cybertruck pages; availability and behavior can vary by vehicle, software version and region.

The legal question now

A complaint is a set of allegations, not a judgment. Saint Amour must ultimately prove a legally actionable defect or failure, causation and damages, while Tesla can contest those elements and argue that driver conduct caused or contributed to the crash. The requested dollar amount does not predict an award. The case’s significance will depend on evidence produced in discovery—not on the headline’s claim that a truck tried to drive someone off a bridge.
