The new RS 5 combines a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with a 130-kW electric motor, a 25.9-kWh battery and AC charging. Audi quotes 470 kW/639 PS, 825 Nm and 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds for the sedan.
BMW’s next M3 direction is different. BMW says its first fully electric M models arrive from 2027 and that the Neue Klasse BMW i3 sports sedan will form the basis for the first fully electric M3. So the RS 5 wins the narrow race to a PHEV drivetrain—not the broader race to electrification.
The short answer: Audi wins the plug-in-hybrid race
The new Audi RS 5 is officially a plug-in hybrid, while BMW’s next M3 direction is officially battery-electric rather than plug-in hybrid. That makes the headline defensible—but only if “plug-in power” means a performance car with a combustion engine, rechargeable battery and AC charging.
BMW is not necessarily arriving late to electrification. BMW says its first fully electric M models will arrive from 2027, and it identifies the Neue Klasse BMW i3 sports sedan as the basis for the first fully electric M3. In other words, Audi is taking the PHEV route first; BMW appears to be trying to skip that intermediate step for the M3.

The RS 5 announced on February 19, 2026, combines a twin-turbo V6 with a 130-kW electric motor, a 25.9-kWh battery and Audi’s quattro Dynamic Torque Control system. Audi quotes 470 kW/639 PS, 825 Nm and a 0–100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds. BMW has confirmed the broad architecture of its electric M future, but not the production electric M3’s final output, battery size, range, weight, price or detailed U.S. launch schedule.
PHEV versus BEV: why the wording matters
A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, has both a combustion engine and a rechargeable battery. It can drive on electric power for a limited distance, but its gasoline engine remains available for long trips. That is the formula Audi has chosen for the RS 5.
A battery-electric vehicle, or BEV, has no combustion engine. It relies entirely on its battery and electric motors. BMW’s confirmed Neue Klasse M direction is a BEV architecture with four electric motors, not a plug-in-hybrid system.
That distinction prevents two opposite mistakes. It would be wrong to say BMW has confirmed a plug-in-hybrid M3. It would also be misleading to imply that Audi is more electrified overall simply because it reaches plug-in performance first. A future electric M3 would use a more complete form of electrification than the RS 5, even though it would not be a PHEV.
What the Audi RS 5 brings to the transition
Audi Sport describes the RS 5 as its first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Rather than replacing the combustion drivetrain immediately, Audi has added substantial electric hardware to a familiar performance-car layout.
| Item | Audi RS 5 announced figure or description |
|---|---|
| Combustion engine | Updated 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 |
| V6 output | 375 kW/510 PS and 600 Nm |
| Electric motor | 130 kW, integrated into an electrified eight-speed transmission |
| System output | 470 kW/639 PS |
| System torque | 825 Nm quoted by Audi |
| Battery | 25.9 kWh gross, 22.0 kWh net |
| Electrical system | 400 volts |
| AC charging | Up to 11 kW; approximately 2.5 hours for a full charge under Audi’s stated conditions |
| 0–100 km/h | 3.6 seconds for the sedan |
| Top speed | 250 km/h standard; 285 km/h with the optional package |
| European electric range | 84–75 km for the sedan under EAER; up to 87 km in city driving |
The engine’s 510 PS and 600 Nm are not the whole story. The electric motor contributes up to 130 kW and fills in torque delivery through the electrified eight-speed transmission. Audi quotes 639 PS and 825 Nm for the complete system, giving the RS 5 the immediate response associated with electrification without abandoning the V6’s long-distance range and refueling convenience.

Electric range and charging caveats
Audi lists 84–75 km of combined electric range for the RS 5 sedan and as much as 87 km in city driving. Those are European EAER figures, not U.S. EPA range ratings. They should not be copied into a U.S.-market buying guide as though they were directly interchangeable with EPA numbers.
The battery has 25.9 kWh of gross capacity and 22.0 kWh of usable, or net, capacity. Audi lists a 400-volt electrical system and AC charging at up to 11 kW, with a full charge taking approximately 2.5 hours under the company’s stated conditions. The published information establishes the AC charging capability; it should not be treated as a promise of a particular U.S. charging connector, installation configuration or charging result until Audi publishes market-specific details.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The RS 5 supports AC charging at up to 11 kW, so a Level 2 EV charger is the relevant category for owners who want to replenish the battery at home. Before buying, verify the connector, the charger’s amperage, the home’s electrical-panel capacity and local installation requirements; compatibility is not guaranteed merely because a charger is marketed for EVs.
Quattro gets a new kind of torque control
The RS 5’s most distinctive technical feature may be its quattro Dynamic Torque Control system. An electromechanical rear transaxle can vary torque between the rear wheels, while a preloaded center differential manages the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles.
Audi calls this the world’s first electromechanical torque-vectoring system in a production car. That should remain attributed to Audi rather than presented as an independently verified industry fact. The practical significance is clearer than the superlative: the RS 5 is not merely adding electric assistance for acceleration. Its electric and mechanical systems are also intended to give the chassis more precise control over how power reaches each wheel.
That arrangement could make the PHEV RS 5 feel more agile and adjustable than a conventional all-wheel-drive performance sedan. It also adds hardware: a combustion engine, turbochargers, transmission, battery, electric motor, high-voltage electronics and torque-control components. The advantage is flexibility; the trade-off is complexity and likely additional mass. Audi’s reviewed official material does not provide a complete U.S.-market curb weight, so a precise weight comparison with the future M3 would be speculation.

BMW is taking the M3 toward four-motor electric power
BMW announced in January 2026 that BMW M will begin a new fully electric era from 2027. The company’s stated BMW M eDrive approach centers on:
- Four electric motors
- Individual-wheel torque control
- An M-specific dynamic-performance control system
- An optimized high-voltage battery
- 800-volt charging technology
This is a fundamentally different route from Audi’s RS 5. Instead of combining one gasoline engine with one electric motor and an electrified transmission, BMW is developing a dedicated electric-performance system with one motor assigned to each wheel. That should give BMW much greater software control over torque at each corner of the car, at least in principle.
BMW’s Neue Klasse overview says the sports sedan BMW i3 will arrive in the United States in 2027 and will provide the basis for the first fully electric M3. BMW has not yet supplied the final production name, output figures, battery capacity, EPA range, pricing, curb weight, charging curve or a detailed U.S. launch schedule for that electric M3.
Those missing figures matter. Four motors and 800-volt charging tell us a great deal about BMW’s engineering direction, but they do not yet prove that the electric M3 will be quicker, lighter, more affordable, better on a circuit or more enjoyable than the RS 5. Any detailed predictions about those outcomes should be labeled as forecasts rather than BMW specifications.
The unusual 2027 overlap: a gasoline M3 sendoff and an electric future
BMW’s transition is not as simple as “the gasoline M3 ends, then the electric M3 begins.” BMW has also officially announced the 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter as a limited-generation sendoff. It uses the S58 twin-turbo inline-six, rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission.
That creates a striking contrast around the 2027 model year. Depending on market, production timing and model designation, BMW’s lineup may include a final special gasoline M3 derivative built around a manual gearbox while the company begins introducing the Neue Klasse-based electric M direction.

The M3 CS Handschalter is therefore relevant even though it is not a direct PHEV rival to the RS 5. It represents the last celebration of BMW’s traditional performance formula: a turbocharged inline-six, rear-wheel drive and driver-operated gear changes. The future electric M3 represents BMW’s opposite experiment: four motors, individual-wheel control and an 800-volt electrical system.

So, does the Audi RS 5 really beat the BMW M3 to plug-in power?
Yes, under the narrow PHEV comparison. Audi has announced a production RS 5 with a gasoline engine, electric motor, traction battery and AC charging capability. BMW’s official material reviewed for this comparison describes the next M3 as fully electric, not plug-in hybrid. Audi therefore gets a high-performance PHEV to market before BMW announces a plug-in-hybrid M3.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo, if “beat” means becoming electrified first or going further. BMW has already committed to fully electric BMW M models from 2027. A battery-electric M3 would eliminate the combustion engine entirely and could offer more sophisticated wheel-by-wheel torque control than the RS 5’s hybrid system. It would be a different kind of technical leap, not a delayed version of Audi’s approach.
The fairest summary is that Audi gets to plug-in-hybrid performance first, while BMW prepares to leapfrog the PHEV stage for the M3. The RS 5 offers a bridge between familiar liquid-fuel performance and electric driving. BMW’s future M3 is intended to test whether a purpose-built electric architecture can deliver the response, adjustability and emotional appeal expected of an M car without a combustion engine.

The bigger story for performance cars
The RS 5 and future electric M3 show two credible answers to the same industry problem. Audi is preserving the V6 and eight-speed transmission while adding a battery large enough for meaningful electric driving and a sophisticated torque-control system. That can suit drivers who want electric commuting capability without planning long journeys around charging stops.
BMW is betting that the best electric M car should be designed around electric power from the start. Four motors may enable more precise torque management than a conventional all-wheel-drive layout, while the 800-volt system is intended to support the demands of a high-performance EV. But the final car must still solve the difficult parts of electric performance: battery weight, sustained track use, thermal management, charging time and the subjective qualities enthusiasts associate with an M3.
For now, Audi has the concrete product and the concrete numbers. BMW has the more radical confirmed blueprint, plus a final manual M3 CS for buyers who want one last chapter of traditional M-car hardware. The RS 5 wins the race to plug-in power; the electric M3 may ultimately make that race irrelevant.
