For 2026, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid starts $600 below the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on the automakers’ displayed base prices: $31,300 for the Tucson SE and $31,900 for the RAV4 LE FWD. That makes the Tucson the lower-priced starting point, but it does not settle which is the better buy. Toyota’s published lineup points to higher fuel economy on several grades, while drivetrain, equipment, dealer pricing, and your priorities can change the comparison.
Choose by matching the exact trims and FWD/AWD configurations you would actually buy, then compare local quotes and the EPA labels for those builds. The figures below are U.S. 2026 model-year manufacturer information available October 5, 2026—not a real-world fuel-economy test or a road-test verdict.
How much do the RAV4 Hybrid and Tucson Hybrid cost?
At the entry level, Hyundai lists the 2026 Tucson Hybrid SE at $31,300, while Toyota lists the RAV4 Hybrid LE FWD at $31,900. The displayed starting-price difference is $600 in Hyundai’s favor. These are base prices, not out-the-door quotes: Hyundai excludes freight, tax, title, and license fees and says dealer prices may vary; Toyota’s $31,900 starting figure excludes its Dealer Processing and Handling fee.
Trim prices are useful for narrowing the choice, but they do not represent equivalent equipment or necessarily equivalent drivetrains. Hyundai’s SE is available with FWD or AWD; its higher trims shown here are AWD-only. Match the Toyota build and drivetrain as well, and ask dealers for quotes that identify destination or freight, dealer charges, options, incentives, and any markup.

Prices are manufacturer-listed U.S. base MSRPs for the 2026 model year; they are not transaction prices. Toyota’s official 2026 RAV4 overview and 2026 launch announcement provide its figures. Hyundai’s 2026 Tucson Hybrid page provides its trim prices and fee qualification.
Which hybrid SUV gets better gas mileage?
There is no useful single brand-level answer: fuel economy changes with trim and drivetrain. Hyundai publishes city, highway, and combined EPA estimates for its configurations. Toyota’s 2026 overview presents two MPG figures by grade, but the cited overview rendering does not label those figures as city and highway; do not compare them directly with Hyundai’s three-part ratings or infer a Toyota combined rating from the pair alone.

| Vehicle/configuration | Manufacturer-published fuel economy | What the figures establish |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE, SE, XLE Premium | 47/40 MPG; Toyota overview does not label the two figures in the cited rendering | Grade-level figures; combined rating not established by that pair |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland | 41/35 MPG; Toyota overview does not label the two figures in the cited rendering | Grade-level figures; combined rating not established by that pair |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE, Limited | 43/37 MPG; Toyota overview does not label the two figures in the cited rendering | Grade-level figures; combined rating not established by that pair |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid FWD | Up to 44 MPG combined, manufacturer-estimated | Toyota newsroom’s FWD maximum, not a figure for every grade |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SE FWD; SEL FWD | 40 city / 35 highway / 38 combined MPG | Hyundai EPA estimates |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SE AWD | 38 city / 38 highway / 38 combined MPG | Hyundai EPA estimates |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL AWD; SEL Convenience AWD; Limited AWD | 36 city / 37 highway / 36 combined MPG | Hyundai EPA estimates |
Hyundai says actual mileage varies with options, driving conditions, habits, and vehicle condition. The 44-MPG combined figure is Toyota’s manufacturer estimate for FWD, not an independent result. For a fair fuel-cost comparison, check the official EPA label for each exact Toyota grade and drivetrain against the Hyundai configuration you are considering; no real-world comparative test is established here. The ratings and specifications are listed on Toyota’s RAV4 overview, Toyota’s launch announcement, and Hyundai’s Tucson Hybrid specifications.
How do power and all-wheel drive compare?
Hyundai lists 231 hp of combined system output for the Tucson Hybrid. Toyota lists 226 hp for the RAV4 Hybrid FWD and 236 hp for AWD. These are manufacturer-reported system horsepower figures; they do not, on their own, establish which SUV accelerates faster in real driving.

Both offer a way to add driven-wheel capability, but availability varies by trim. Toyota lists FWD or electronic on-demand AWD depending on grade. Hyundai’s SE can be configured FWD or AWD, while HTRAC AWD is standard on the SEL Convenience and Limited grades in the published specifications. Compare the drivetrain on the actual vehicle quote rather than assuming that a trim name alone makes the vehicles equivalent.
Which one fits your equipment and driving needs?
For a lower starting price
The Tucson Hybrid SE has the lower displayed entry MSRP. Whether that remains the less expensive choice after fees and dealer pricing depends on local quotes and the equipment and drivetrain you select. A useful comparison is two written quotes for similarly equipped vehicles—not the lowest trim price against a better-equipped model.

For technology and trim-specific features
Toyota highlights a standard 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an available 12.9-inch multimedia screen; equipment varies by grade. Hyundai lists a 12.3-inch touchscreen on the SE, with driver-assistance and other technology features varying by trim. Review the feature lists for the exact two builds, since the entry prices do not imply identical equipment.
For light outdoor use
The RAV4 Hybrid Woodland is the more explicitly terrain-oriented package in the information cited here: Toyota describes it as AWD and specifies all-terrain tires, roof crossbars, a tow-hitch receiver, and all-weather floor and cargo mats. That is evidence of trim equipment, not proof of serious off-road ability. Hyundai offers HTRAC AWD, but the available information does not establish a matched rough-road or ground-clearance advantage for either SUV.

What do the safety ratings tell you?
Toyota says Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on every 2026 RAV4. Hyundai reports that the 2026 Tucson Hybrid received an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award and a NHTSA five-star Overall Safety Rating; Hyundai specifies that the NHTSA result excludes the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.
Those are different kinds of evidence: a standard driver-assistance suite is not the same thing as a crash-test award or government rating. The available model-year information does not provide a corresponding RAV4 crash-test result, so it does not support declaring either vehicle safer overall. Check the current IIHS and NHTSA vehicle records for the exact model and equipment if crash-test performance is a deciding factor.
What should you verify before choosing?
- Get comparable quotes: Match trim, drivetrain, options, destination or freight, dealer charges, and incentives; compare the resulting prices rather than base MSRP alone.
- Check the exact EPA labels: Compare city, highway, and combined estimates for the builds you can actually buy. Toyota’s two-number overview figures should not be treated as combined MPG.
- Inspect the equipment list: Confirm which technology, comfort, and driver-assistance features are included on each quoted trim.
- Test-drive both: Ride comfort, cabin noise, visibility, controls, and personal fit are not established by the published specifications.
- Verify practical space for your use: A matched cargo- and passenger-space comparison is not established here. Bring the people, child seats, or luggage that matter and assess the vehicles directly.
- Consider ownership factors separately: Comparative reliability, resale value, insurance, repair costs, local availability, and owner satisfaction are not resolved by the specifications above.
So, which one should you buy?
Start with the Tucson Hybrid if a lower displayed entry price is your priority, then confirm that its quoted trim and drivetrain deliver the features you want. Put the RAV4 Hybrid on top of your list if its available grade and drivetrain meet your needs and the exact EPA label supports your fuel-economy preference. For either SUV, the decisive comparison is a local, like-for-like quote and a test drive—not a universal winner inferred from starting MSRP, horsepower, or incomplete MPG figures.
