Which models are being compared?
This is a U.S.-market comparison of the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid—not the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid or a gas-only CR-V. Toyota says every 2026 RAV4 is either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while Honda offers the CR-V with gas-only and hybrid powertrains. The figures below apply to the hybrid versions unless noted.
How do their fuel economy and output compare?
Toyota’s October 22, 2025 announcement gives manufacturer-estimated fuel-economy ratings by RAV4 Hybrid grade. Honda’s 2026 specifications give EPA ratings for CR-V Hybrid trims. Match drivetrain and trim when comparing: ratings vary, and the sources do not provide a comparative real-world fuel-economy test.

On these published figures, the RAV4 Hybrid FWD has the higher maximum combined rating: 43 mpg, compared with 40 mpg for the CR-V Sport Hybrid FWD. Toyota also lists more system horsepower: 226 hp for FWD and 236 hp for AWD, versus Honda’s 204 total system hp. The manufacturers use different output terminology, and horsepower figures alone are not an acceleration comparison.

The RAV4’s 47-mpg figure is its estimated city rating for the FWD hybrid, not its combined rating. For AWD shoppers, compare the exact grades: the listed RAV4 ratings range from 38 to 42 mpg combined, while listed CR-V Hybrid AWD trims range from 35 to 37 mpg combined.
Which has more cargo space?
Honda’s manufacturer-authored 2026 comparison lists maximum cargo capacity of 76.5 cu ft for the CR-V Hybrid and 70.4 cu ft for the RAV4 Hybrid. Honda’s own trim specifications separately list 71.8 cu ft maximum for CR-V Hybrid versions. These are manufacturer-published figures, not the result of an independent cargo measurement; check the measurement method and trim-specific specifications if cargo fit is decisive.

These are the cited manufacturers’ starting MSRPs, not fee-normalized out-the-door prices. Because the exclusions differ, the figures alone do not establish which SUV costs less to buy. Get local quotes for comparable hybrid trims and drivetrains, including destination, dealer charges, and options; prices and availability can change.
What equipment and safety features matter?
Toyota says Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on every 2026 RAV4. In its head-to-head comparison, Honda credits the CR-V with standard driver-assistance and convenience features including a rear seat reminder and standard floor mats, and counts 10 standard driver aids for the CR-V versus seven for the RAV4. That count and the comparison’s favorable verdict for Honda are Honda’s own claims, not an independent equipment audit. Confirm the exact equipment on the trim you are considering.

Which hybrid SUV should you choose?
Choose the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid if
- You want the higher published combined fuel-economy figure available in the compared lineups, and the relevant trim and drivetrain suit your needs.
- You value the higher published system horsepower.
- You prefer a RAV4 lineup Toyota says is entirely hybrid or plug-in hybrid for 2026.
Choose the Honda CR-V Hybrid if
- You prioritize Honda’s higher published maximum cargo-capacity figure.
- The standard features cited in Honda’s comparison are more useful to you; verify equipment on your chosen trim.
For a fair shopping comparison, match FWD with FWD or AWD with AWD and compare similarly equipped trims. The CR-V TrailSport Hybrid’s published EPA combined rating is lower than the other listed CR-V Hybrid trims, so do not use its figure as a stand-in for the whole lineup.

The available sales claim does not establish that. Toyota describes the RAV4 as the best-selling small SUV in America, a broader category statement that does not provide a hybrid-only ranking. Without sales data scoped to geography, period, and powertrain, it would be misleading to label the RAV4 the best-selling hybrid SUV.
