For a family that needs three rows and wants lower fuel use, start with the 2026 Toyota Highlander. For higher towing capacity or more specialized off-road hardware, start with the 2026 Toyota 4Runner. The right choice turns on how you will use the SUV—and which exact grade and equipment you are comparing.
This guide covers the 2026 U.S. models. If you are shopping used or considering an earlier model year, compare specifications for that year and trim rather than applying these figures to it.
2026 Toyota Highlander vs. 4Runner at a glance
| What matters | 2026 Toyota Highlander | 2026 Toyota 4Runner |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting point for | Three-row passenger flexibility and, with the hybrid, lower manufacturer-estimated combined fuel use | Higher maximum tow rating and available 4WD hardware for more demanding terrain |
| Passenger capacity | Three rows; seats up to seven, or up to eight with an available second-row bench on specified grades | Not stated in the cited Toyota 2026 announcement; check the exact grade and configuration |
| Fuel economy figures | Manufacturer-estimated 24 mpg combined for gas and 35 mpg combined for Hybrid | Toyota’s 2026 announcement gives highway estimates of 26 mpg for i-FORCE and 24 mpg for i-FORCE MAX; these are not combined ratings |
| Maximum published towing capacity | 5,000 pounds for gas; up to 3,500 pounds for Hybrid | Up to 6,000 pounds |
| Drive and terrain focus | AWD standard across 2026 gas and hybrid grades; terrain modes support rough-weather and light unpaved-road needs | 4WD configurations can include a two-speed transfer case and off-road traction equipment; availability varies by grade |
Specifications and estimates in the table come from Toyota’s 2026 U.S. model-year materials. Fuel economy is an estimate, not a promise of real-world results. For model details, see Toyota’s 2026 Highlander announcement, Highlander features page, and 2026 4Runner announcement.
Which one suits your passengers and everyday routine?
Choose the Highlander if you need three rows
Toyota describes the 2026 Highlander as a three-row SUV with seating for up to seven. An available second-row bench raises capacity to eight on specified grades, so do not assume every Highlander has that layout. Toyota lists up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded.

Think about who will use the back row and how often. If adults will ride there regularly, sit in the actual vehicle and check access and comfort; a seat count alone does not tell you whether the layout works for your household. Also try the cargo arrangement you expect to use, since carrying passengers and carrying bulky luggage compete for space.
Compare the 4Runner’s exact seating layout
The cited Toyota 2026 4Runner announcement does not establish a comparable passenger-capacity figure. Confirm the seating layout on the specific grade you are considering and check whether it accommodates your usual passengers without compromising the cargo space you need.

How do fuel use and power compare?
Highlander gas and Hybrid figures
Toyota’s 2025 announcement for the 2026 model year estimates 24 mpg combined for the gas Highlander and 35 mpg combined for the Highlander Hybrid. The gas version uses a 265-hp 2.4-liter turbo engine rated at 310 lb.-ft. of torque; the Hybrid has 243 net combined horsepower. These are different powertrain measures, so horsepower figures should not be read as a direct measure of how each vehicle feels in every driving situation.
4Runner figures use a different fuel-economy measure
For the 2026 4Runner, Toyota’s November 2025 announcement gives highway estimates—not combined ratings—of 26 mpg for i-FORCE and 24 mpg for i-FORCE MAX. Toyota lists 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque for i-FORCE, and 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. for i-FORCE MAX.

Because the Highlander figures above are combined estimates while the 4Runner figures are highway estimates, they are not an apples-to-apples mileage comparison. Actual consumption varies with driving conditions, configuration, and use. Compare like-for-like ratings for the exact versions on your shortlist before treating fuel economy as decisive.
Which is better for towing?
The 2026 4Runner has the higher published maximum: Toyota lists up to 6,000 pounds. Toyota lists a 5,000-pound maximum for the gas Highlander and up to 3,500 pounds for the Highlander Hybrid. These are maximum ratings, not a recommendation to tow a trailer at that weight in every configuration.
Before choosing, check the rating for the exact vehicle and its equipment, then account for the loaded vehicle and trailer. Passengers, cargo, and tongue weight affect how much capacity remains; a vehicle’s maximum tow rating should not be treated as a substitute for checking its other loading limits.

4Runner: more specialized 4WD capability
Some 2026 4Runner 4WD configurations include a two-speed transfer case with high and low range, and off-road traction equipment varies by grade. This makes the 4Runner the stronger starting point if your regular plans include more demanding trails or terrain that calls for specialized hardware. Check the equipment list for the grade you are buying; the 4Runner lineup is not identically equipped throughout.

Highlander: AWD for weather and lighter unpaved use
Toyota made AWD standard across 2026 Highlander gas and hybrid grades. AWD and terrain modes can help with rough weather and light unpaved roads, but the Highlander and 4Runner are built around different use priorities. If technical trails are part of the plan, focus on the 4Runner’s grade-specific 4WD equipment rather than assuming the Highlander’s AWD makes the vehicles equivalent off pavement.
How to compare grades and prices without guessing
Grade names, equipment, and prices can change the practical comparison. Toyota’s public 2026 pages and announcements show differing grade-level prices, so a launch figure is not a reliable substitute for a current local quote. Build the two vehicles with the features and drivetrain you actually want, then compare current local pricing and the equipment included on each.
- List your must-haves: passenger count, seating layout, towing needs, fuel-economy priorities, and the kind of terrain you drive.
- Select specific Highlander and 4Runner grades that meet those needs; verify seating, drivetrain, and off-road equipment on the exact configurations.
- Check the current local build or request dealer quotes for those configurations, rather than relying on an earlier announced price.
- Verify the exact vehicle’s tow rating and loading limits if towing is part of your decision.
Which should you choose?
Choose the Highlander as your first comparison if three-row flexibility is central to your routine, especially if the Hybrid’s manufacturer-estimated 35 mpg combined figure is relevant to your priorities. Choose the 4Runner as your first comparison if its higher published maximum tow rating or available 4WD hardware better matches your plans. Before deciding, verify that the specific grade you can buy has the seats, drivetrain, equipment, and capacity your use case requires.
