Kia’s 2027 Telluride page lists the LX at a $39,190 starting MSRP. Kia specifically says that amount excludes destination and handling, taxes, title, license, options, and dealer charges, and that the actual dealer price can vary.
How to make the prices comparable
- Choose the seating arrangement first. A second-row bench and captain’s chairs can be tied to different trims, so a seven-seat Telluride may not be priced like an eight-seat version.
- Match drivetrain and traction. Compare front-wheel drive with front-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive with all-wheel drive, before judging a price gap.
- List required family equipment—such as a power liftgate, second-row slide, driver-assistance features, or a towing package—and add it to both vehicles.
- Request an itemized buyer’s order showing destination, documentation fees, taxes, registration, accessories, incentives, and financing terms. A lower advertised MSRP can disappear once those items are included.
- Check the window sticker or vehicle identification number. Model-year transition periods can leave 2026 and 2027 vehicles on sale at the same time, with different incentives and equipment.
For a family shopping on a strict monthly budget, the Kia’s lower published entry point is the logical first quote to request. For a buyer who specifically wants a conventional hybrid or a particular Toyota grade, the relevant Grand Highlander price—not the base gas price—should be the comparison.

These are manufacturer-published estimates, not a guarantee of what your family will see. Kia notes that options, driving conditions, driving habits, and vehicle condition affect actual mileage. Winter temperatures, roof cargo, short school runs, heavy traffic, tire pressure, and frequent towing can also move real-world consumption away from an EPA estimate.
What the Grand Highlander choices mean
- Gasoline: the straightforward choice when purchase price, familiar operation, or towing requirements matter more than maximum fuel economy.
- Conventional hybrid: the efficiency-oriented Grand Highlander choice. It is the configuration to investigate if most of your driving is commuting, school drop-off, and urban errands.
- Hybrid MAX: a separate, higher-output hybrid approach. Its fuel-economy estimate is lower than the conventional Hybrid LE’s, so do not assume that every Toyota hybrid delivers the same efficiency.
What is known about the Telluride Hybrid
Kia’s official 2027 Telluride Hybrid page describes a 2.5-liter turbo-hybrid powertrain. Kia states: “The 2.5L turbo hybrid powertrain delivers 329 hp and 339 lb.-ft. of torque, giving you smooth, confident power every time you hit the accelerator.” That is manufacturer product-page language, not an independent acceleration test or a comparative performance result.
If “Telluride or Grand Highlander hybrid” is your search question, first decide whether you want the lowest fuel use, the strongest available output, or the lowest purchase price. Then confirm which hybrid trim is actually stocked in your area, what all-wheel-drive options do to the estimate, and whether the quoted vehicle includes the seating and towing equipment your family needs.

Seating, car seats, and third-row access
Both SUVs can be configured for as many as eight occupants, but the maximum number is not the same as a comfortable family arrangement. The Grand Highlander has listed bench-seat configurations. The Telluride can use a second-row bench for eight seats or captain’s chairs for seven on some trims.

A bench can provide a usable center position for an additional child or adult and may leave fewer unused gaps when all three rows are occupied. It can also make it easier to carry one more passenger on a short trip. The trade-off is that children or adults must share the second-row space, and access to the third row may require a tilt-and-slide mechanism rather than a walk-through gap.
When captain’s chairs help
Captain’s chairs create a center aisle and can make it easier for children to reach the third row without climbing over a seat. They may be preferable for families who routinely use all three rows, but they reduce the maximum seating count and can complicate how many child restraints fit across the second row.

Car-seat checks that specifications cannot answer
- Install every child restraint you use, including rear-facing seats, high-back boosters, and a forward-facing harness seat.
- Check whether the front passenger seat must be moved forward to provide rear-facing clearance.
- Test the lower anchors and seat-belt buckles in the exact trim; hardware placement can vary by seating configuration.
- Have the person who normally helps children enter and exit operate the second-row release and third-row access path.
- Put a child in the third row and check knee room, headroom, visibility, ventilation, and the ability to reach the buckle independently.
- Confirm that opening a door, folding a seat, or removing a booster does not require unloading another child.
A brochure’s “up to eight” statement cannot establish whether your particular combination of adults, children, car seats, and access needs will work. Treat the seating layout as a purchase decision, not an afterthought.
Cargo space: why the published numbers are not a direct winner
Grand Highlander versus Telluride cargo space is easy to misread because Toyota and Kia present different seat positions. Toyota advertises a maximum of 97.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Kia publishes SAE volumes behind each row:

Because the seat positions and measurement presentation differ, the 97.5-cubic-foot Toyota figure should not be subtracted from or directly ranked against Kia’s behind-row-three number. The practical question is how much usable floor remains with your normal seating pattern.

A family cargo test that takes 15 minutes
- Bring the stroller, sports bags, cooler, diaper bag, or mobility equipment you carry most often.
- Set the second and third rows exactly as they are used on a normal trip; do not fold seats merely to make a showroom photo look spacious.
- Load the stroller with the third row raised. Check whether the liftgate closes without forcing the cargo against a seatback.
- Try a weekend’s luggage with two or three passengers in the rear rows.
- Measure the opening height and width for bulky items, not just the advertised floor volume.
- Check whether a folded seat leaves a step, a gap, or an exposed latch that makes sliding cargo difficult.
If all three rows stay in use, Kia’s row-specific figure gives you a clearer starting point for planning. If you normally fold the third row, compare the actual floor and opening in both vehicles; neither manufacturer’s headline maximum predicts whether your stroller or instrument case will fit.

Both manufacturer pages cite towing capacity up to 5,000 pounds. That figure is a maximum claim, not permission to attach a 5,000-pound trailer to every trim. Engine, drivetrain, cooling equipment, hitch hardware, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and trailer brakes can change the usable limit.
Before choosing either SUV for a trailer
- Identify the loaded trailer weight, not its empty brochure weight.
- Confirm the exact vehicle’s tow rating, tongue-weight limit, and gross combined weight rating in the window sticker and owner’s manual.
- Ask whether a factory or approved hitch, wiring harness, transmission or battery cooling equipment, and trailer-brake controller are required.
- Subtract passengers, luggage, roof cargo, and accessories from the vehicle’s payload before calculating tongue weight.
- Verify that the trim you can buy locally—not merely a higher trim shown in advertising—has the needed equipment.
Kia directs owners to the towing instructions in the owner’s manual and notes that additional equipment is required. Toyota likewise applies powertrain and grade distinctions to its general towing statement. If towing is occasional, obtain the exact configuration in writing before signing; if it is a central use, have the dealer demonstrate the hitch, wiring, and trailer-control setup.

A longer warranty category does not prove superior reliability, and the terms may include exclusions, transfer rules, or regional conditions. Read the warranty booklet for the exact vehicle and ask how coverage applies if ownership changes. Do not use the hybrid-battery term as a substitute for comparing the complete new-vehicle warranty.
Which three-row SUV is better for a family?
Start with the Grand Highlander when these priorities lead
- You want a conventional hybrid choice rather than only gasoline or a turbo-hybrid offering.
- You regularly fold the rear seats and value Toyota’s advertised maximum folded-seat cargo figure, while understanding that the measurement is not directly equivalent to Kia’s row-by-row data.
