The 2026 Toyota GR86 is a rear-wheel-drive, two-door sports coupe with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer engine, a six-speed manual or automatic, and a U.S. starting MSRP of $31,400. Its appeal is an engaging, driver-focused layout at a comparatively accessible listed price; the trade-off is a small cabin and limited cargo space. “Ultimate affordable sports car” is a useful way to describe its appeal, not a verified class ranking.

What is it like to live with?
The GR86 is a small 2+2 coupe, so its rear seats are better viewed as occasional-use space than as a substitute for a roomy back seat. In an Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press, the GR86’s trunk is reported at 6.3 cubic feet. Edmunds notes that the rear seats fold to accommodate a spare set of wheels and tires, a useful arrangement for track-day logistics.
That same comparison—between the 2026 Honda Prelude and 2027 Toyota GR86—praised the GR86’s steering feel and balance, describing it as the more connected car to drive. It also characterized the GR86 cabin as noisy at speed and its infotainment as dated, with wired-only phone mirroring. These are observations from that specific comparison, not a universal verdict on every buyer’s priorities. Read the AP-published Edmunds comparison.

Fuel economy
Toyota lists estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for the U.S. grades. In the Edmunds comparison, the GR86 is listed at 22 mpg combined with the manual and 24 mpg combined with the automatic. Those combined figures use a different measure and attribution; they should not be substituted for Toyota’s city/highway listing.
How does U.S. pricing differ from Canada?
Toyota Canada’s November 6, 2025 release lists four Canadian grades and separates MSRP from an estimated vehicle price. The latter includes the release’s listed freight/PDI, air-conditioning charge, maximum dealer and other fees, but excludes taxes, license, insurance and registration. These are Canadian-market amounts and must not be compared as if they were U.S. prices. Toyota Canada’s 2026 GR86 release.

It can suit a driver whose daily priorities are compact dimensions, a sporty layout and occasional-use rear seats. Its compromises matter if you regularly carry adults in back, need substantial luggage space, or prioritize a quiet cabin and easy phone connectivity. The AP-published Edmunds comparison describes the Prelude as more comfortable and easier to live with, while the GR86 is more driver-focused; the comparison is between different model years, not a like-for-like 2026 test.

GR86 or Subaru BRZ: how should you compare them?
The GR86 and BRZ are natural alternatives to investigate, but the available evidence here does not establish current U.S. BRZ prices or provide a direct current-year GR86-versus-BRZ test. Avoid choosing on an assumed price gap. Compare live quotes for equivalent equipment in your market, then assess the differences that matter to your use.
- Driving layout: Compare drivetrain and transmission options, especially if rear-wheel drive and a manual are priorities.
- Real purchase cost: Align trim and included equipment, then include destination, dealer fees, taxes and other applicable charges.
- Everyday use: Check seat comfort, rear-seat usability, cargo space, cabin noise and phone connectivity in person.
- Fuel economy: Compare figures using the same measure—such as combined with combined—rather than mixing city/highway and combined estimates.
Is the 2026 GR86 worth considering?
The GR86 makes the strongest case for a buyer who values a compact, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a manual option more than rear-seat comfort, cargo volume or a particularly quiet commute. Toyota’s published U.S. price and specifications make the proposition clear, but they do not establish that it is the cheapest, fastest or best sports car in its class. Make the decision against your local, fully itemized quote and your own priorities.
