Short answer: a 2026 model year badge does not prove that its engine is twenty years old, and the available manufacturer evidence does not verify the exact five-engine list promised by the sensational headline. Some supercars do preserve a long-running engine family; others use a new design, a heavily revised generation, or a track-only unit with a different lineage altogether.
What “20 years old” should mean
There are at least three different claims hidden inside the phrase “a 20-year-old engine.” They should not be treated as interchangeable:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Supplier or partnership age: a manufacturer may have supplied engines to the same customer for decades.
- Engine-family lineage: a current engine may descend from a family first used many years ago, while sharing little hardware with the original.
- Exact installed engine: the displacement, block, cylinder heads, turbochargers, fuel system, hybrid hardware, control software and emissions equipment in the current car may be substantially new.
A defensible article must identify the engine family, establish its first documented application, identify the precise engine in the current model and list the intervening changes. Without those steps, “old engine” is marketing shorthand rather than a technical conclusion.
Five often-confused examples
| Engine or application | Earliest date established here | What the current evidence supports | Can it be called the same 20-year-old engine? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pagani road-car V12 supplied by Mercedes-AMG | Supplier relationship since 1999 | Multiple generations are identified, including M120, M297 and a newer M275-family generation; Pagani lists a 5,980 cc twin-turbo V12 at 864 HP and 1,100 Nm for the described application. | No. The relationship is over 20 years old, but the evidence does not show one unchanged engine. |
| Pagani Huayra R V12-R | Developed for the Huayra R, announced March 18, 2021 | A 6-litre naturally aspirated V12-R designed from the ground up with HWA for a track car. | No. It is a distinct track engine, not proof of an old road-car AMG V12. |
| Bugatti W16 | Development associated with the Veyron program | Bugatti records 1,001 PS in the initial Veyron, 1,200 PS in the Veyron Super Sport and 1,500 PS in the Chiron, and calls the W16 “the last of its kind.” | It demonstrates a long-running family, but the cited material does not establish an ongoing 2026 production application. |
| Maserati Nettuno V6 | Described as new on July 1, 2020 | A new 90-degree V6 developed for road use; 2026 applications include refreshed Grecale, GranTurismo and GranCabrio calibrations. | No. Maserati’s own wording makes Nettuno a counterexample to a 20-year-old design claim. |
| Lamborghini V12 applications | Not dated sufficiently by the cited material | The 2026 Fenomeno Roadster uses a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 with hybrid technology; the SC20 is specified with a naturally aspirated 6,498 cc V12. | Not established. The specifications do not prove a 20-year architecture. |
Pagani and Mercedes-AMG: a 27-year relationship is not one engine
Mercedes-AMG says it has supplied Pagani with twelve-cylinder engines since 1999. That is a meaningful historical connection, but it dates the business relationship, not every V12 installed in every Pagani.

The manufacturer history names the naturally aspirated M120, the later M297 and a newer generation from the M275 family. Those designations indicate successive engine generations rather than an untouched unit carried forward from 1999. A current Pagani press listing describes an AMG-developed 5,980 cc twin-turbo V12 built to Pagani specifications, with claimed outputs of 864 HP and 1,100 Nm for the stated application. Those figures are manufacturer specifications for that application; they are not evidence that the hardware is the same as the original M120.
Why the Huayra R must be separated
Pagani’s March 18, 2021 release for the Huayra R describes a 6-litre naturally aspirated V12-R developed with HWA from the ground up for the track-focused car. It should not be merged with the road-car AMG V12 simply because both have twelve cylinders or appear under the same marque. Aspiration, purpose, development partner and installation are different.
The accurate conclusion is therefore narrow: Pagani has maintained a V12 supply relationship with Mercedes-AMG for more than two decades, while using multiple engine generations and distinct applications. Calling the current road-car engine “the 1999 engine” overstates what the evidence shows.

Bugatti’s W16: an important lineage, not automatically a 2026 engine
Bugatti’s own history presents the W16 as a defining engineering program. The initial Veyron application is listed at 1,001 PS. The Veyron Super Sport raised that figure to 1,200 PS, and the Chiron reached 1,500 PS. Such changes involve more than a badge: calibration, cooling, turbocharging, materials, control systems and supporting hardware evolve as power rises.
Bugatti characterizes the W16 as “the last of its kind.” That wording is historically significant, but it does not establish that a W16-powered car remains in 2026 production. A historical account of Veyron and Chiron cannot be used as model-year proof for an unnamed 2026 vehicle. Any claim that a 2026 supercar still uses the same W16 would require a current, model-specific production statement.
How to describe the W16 accurately
- Use “W16 family” when discussing the lineage across Veyron and Chiron.
- Identify the specific car and output when quoting 1,001, 1,200 or 1,500 PS.
- Do not imply that the first Veyron engine and the later Chiron unit are identical.
- Do not call it a current 2026 production engine without fresh evidence for that model.
Maserati Nettuno is the clearest counterexample
Maserati’s July 1, 2020 release calls Nettuno a new 90-degree V6 developed for road use. The company describes its introduction as a return to developing and producing a new high-performance engine after twenty years. That statement does not mean no engine engineering occurred during the interval; it is Maserati’s characterization of this particular new program.

The date matters because a 2020 origin cannot satisfy a 20-year threshold in 2026. Nettuno may appear in several 2026 cars, but repeated application does not make the design older than its documented introduction.

What the 2026 calibrations show
Maserati’s June 18, 2026 range announcement lists Nettuno in refreshed Grecale, GranTurismo and GranCabrio applications. The Grecale version is rated at 390 horsepower, while the GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo versions are rated at 590 horsepower. These are manufacturer-published outputs, not independent test results. Different outputs demonstrate calibration and application differences; they do not establish a decades-old engine family.
Lamborghini V12s: specifications without a proven 20-year origin
Lamborghini’s cited material confirms current V12 applications but does not provide the origin date needed to prove the headline’s threshold. The 2026 Fenomeno Roadster announcement combines a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 with hybrid technology. Lamborghini’s SC20 page specifies a naturally aspirated 6,498 cc V12.

Those details identify displacement, aspiration and hybridization for particular cars. They do not, by themselves, establish that the underlying architecture began at least twenty years earlier, nor do they prove that the Fenomeno Roadster and SC20 use the same precise engine specification. A lineage claim needs an attributable first-use date and documentation for the current application.

Ferrari’s 2025 annual report places the F80 in the marque’s limited-edition supercar tradition. The report says the F80 was unveiled in October 2024 and notes that shipments of two models are scheduled to start in 2026. That establishes product timing, not the age of the F80’s engine family.
A car can be delivered in 2026 with a newly developed engine, a derivative of an older family or a combination of combustion and hybrid systems. Without an engine-family origin date and technical description tied to the F80, it is not possible to classify its engine as at least twenty years old from the cited material.

A repeatable test for any “old engine” claim
- Name the exact car and engine code. “V12” or “W16” is a cylinder layout, not a complete identity.
- Find the earliest documented use of that family. Record the model, year and manufacturer wording.
- Separate family ancestry from current hardware. Check displacement, aspiration, cylinder heads, fuel injection, turbochargers, hybrid motors, battery systems and control electronics.
- Check the manufacturer’s description. “New,” “derived,” “revised” and “carried over” have materially different meanings.
- Verify the current model year. A retrospective history cannot substitute for a current production or application statement.
- State the level of certainty. If only the supplier relationship is old, say that. If the architecture is old but the variant is heavily revised, say that instead.
Why badges and familiar names mislead
Model-year badges describe the vehicle’s sales or production period, not the birth date of every component. Automakers also preserve recognizable engine names while changing bore and stroke, crankshafts, combustion chambers, turbo systems, emissions equipment, software and hybrid modules. Conversely, a long supplier relationship can continue through several generations while the customer receives a substantially different engine each time.
That is why power figures should never be used as age evidence. The 864 HP and 1,100 Nm quoted for a Pagani application, the 390- and 590-horsepower Nettuno calibrations, and Bugatti’s historical 1,001-, 1,200- and 1,500-PS outputs describe capability in particular applications. None establishes a design’s birth date.
The defensible verdict on the five-engine headline
The evidence supports a more precise story than the headline. Pagani and Mercedes-AMG have a V12 relationship dating to 1999, but multiple generations are documented. The Huayra R’s V12-R is a separate, ground-up track engine. Bugatti’s W16 has a notable Veyron-to-Chiron lineage, yet the cited account does not prove a current 2026 production model. Maserati’s Nettuno is explicitly described as new in 2020, making it unsuitable as a 20-year-old example. Lamborghini’s current V12 specifications lack the origin date required for the claim, and Ferrari’s F80 timing does not establish engine age.
Accordingly, the supplied manufacturer material does not validate five specific 2026 supercar engines that are each at least twenty years old. The reliable lesson is methodological: identify the family, date its first use, document the current variant and describe every major generation change before calling an engine “20 years old.”
