Choose Subaru’s automatic—officially called the Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT), and commonly searched as the WRX CVT—if clutch-free commuting, paddle shifters, and an automatic mode matter more. Both 2026 U.S. WRXs use the same 2.4-liter turbocharged engine rated at 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The available evidence does not establish a same-year U.S. acceleration winner or a directly comparable U.S. EPA fuel-economy result for both transmissions, so the decision rests primarily on control, convenience, trim availability, and the fuel figures that are actually published.
What changes between the 2026 WRX manual and SPT?
The 2026 WRX uses one powertrain output across the comparison: a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 271 hp and 258 lb-ft. Subaru’s U.S. owner information places peak torque across 2,000–5,200 rpm. Transmission choice changes how you access that output, not the quoted engine rating.

The manual is a conventional six-speed gearbox with a driver-operated clutch and shifter. Subaru describes it as providing direct gear control and an engaged driving experience. The SPT is Subaru’s automatic option. Its features include steering-wheel paddle shifters, automatic downshift blipping control, and an eight-speed manual mode. Subaru’s “eight-speed” wording refers to programmed steps in the continuously variable transmission; it does not mean the car has eight fixed-ratio gears.

In practical terms, the manual lets you select and hold a gear mechanically through the shifter. The SPT can simulate stepped ratios and accept paddle commands, while retaining automatic operation for normal driving. Neither feature list proves that one transmission accelerates faster in the 2026 model.

Which 2026 WRX trims offer each transmission?
Transmission availability is the first buying constraint because you cannot order both choices on every trim. Subaru’s 2026 U.S. features information lists the following combinations:
| 2026 U.S. WRX trim | Six-speed manual | Subaru Performance Transmission (automatic/CVT) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Standard | Not listed as available |
| Premium | Standard | Not listed as available |
| Limited | Standard | Available |
| GT | Not listed as standard or available on the cited features page | Standard |
| tS | Standard | Not listed as available |
That makes the manual the only listed transmission for Base, Premium, Limited, and tS. The SPT is available on Limited and standard on GT. If you have already selected the GT, the automatic is not an optional preference in the cited U.S. range; it is the specified transmission. If you want a manual tS or a lower-priced Base or Premium, the six-speed is the relevant configuration.
Trim equipment, pricing, inventory, and availability can change during a model year. Confirm the current window sticker or dealer build sheet for the exact car you are considering.
Performance: what is established and what is not
Shared engine output
Both transmissions are paired with the 271-hp, 258-lb-ft turbo engine. The published torque band of 2,000–5,200 rpm indicates where the engine is rated to deliver its maximum torque, but it does not reveal shift timing, traction, launch behavior, or acceleration differences between transmissions.
What the manual changes
- You choose the gear and decide when to shift.
- The clutch gives you control over takeoff, engine braking, and low-speed maneuvering.
- You can hold a selected gear without an automatic transmission deciding to change it.
- The manual is available across more of the listed trim range.
Those are operating characteristics, not measured performance results. A driver who enjoys coordinating clutch, throttle, and shifter inputs may find the manual more involving, but the official specifications do not assign a numerical “engagement” advantage.

What the SPT changes
- Automatic downshift blipping can match engine speed during a commanded downshift.
- Paddle shifters let you request ratio changes without moving your hand to a console shifter.
- An eight-speed manual mode provides programmed stepped ratios for a more conventional shift sequence.
- The transmission can remain in automatic operation when you do not want to manage shifts.
Subaru presents these functions as combining automatic convenience with fingertip control. They give the driver more control than leaving the transmission entirely in its default automatic behavior, but they do not turn the SPT into a six-speed manual.
Acceleration evidence
No controlled, same-year 2026 U.S. test in the reviewed material compares manual and SPT acceleration. Do not treat the shared horsepower figure as proof that the cars will record identical 0–60-mph times, and do not claim a definitive automatic or manual win without a matched test.
A Subaru-hosted Consumer Reports page for the 2025 WRX reported a 5.8-second 0–60-mph test for the manual and described the CVT as diluting the car’s sporty demeanor. That is a Consumer Reports observation from a 2025 test, not a Subaru test and not a 2026 manual-versus-SPT comparison. It can provide historical context, but it should not be transferred directly to the 2026 model.
Fuel economy: the published numbers and their limits
U.S. figures
Subaru of America’s 2026 owner resources list the manual WRX at 26 highway / 19 city mpg, in that highway/city order. Those are the U.S. manual figures identified in the source material.
Subaru’s U.S. 2026 model page lists the GT at 25 highway / 18 city mpg. That is a GT trim figure, not a controlled comparison of an otherwise identical car with and without the SPT. The difference cannot be assigned solely to the transmission because trim equipment and configuration also differ.

The reviewed material does not establish a current U.S. EPA automatic rating that can be placed beside the manual’s 26/19 figure. Do not fill that gap by converting Canadian figures, copying a third-party snippet, or assuming the GT number is the automatic’s universal rating.
| Figure | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 26 highway / 19 city mpg | 2026 U.S. WRX manual, Subaru of America owner resources | Use as the published U.S. manual rating; keep the highway/city order. |
| 25 highway / 18 city mpg | 2026 U.S. WRX GT trim, Subaru of America model page | Use as a GT trim figure, not proof of a transmission-only difference. |
| U.S. automatic EPA figure | Not established in the reviewed material | Do not infer or convert a value. |
Canadian figures
Subaru Canada’s 2026 engineering information reports consumption in Canada’s rating system as follows:
| Transmission | City | Highway | Additional Canadian display |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6MT | 12.3 L/100 km | 9.0 L/100 km | 23/31 Imperial mpg |
| Subaru Performance Transmission | 12.7 L/100 km | 9.4 L/100 km | 22/30 Imperial mpg |
These Canadian figures point toward slightly higher consumption for the SPT in that market’s published data, but they are not U.S. EPA estimates. Test procedures, labeling conventions, vehicle specifications, and unit systems differ by country. Keep the country and units attached whenever you quote them.
Historical test context
Consumer Reports reported 25 mpg overall in its tested manual 2025 WRX. That is a publication test result for the previous model year, not an official 2026 rating and not a direct manual-versus-automatic comparison. It may help set expectations for real-world variation, but your result will depend on speed, traffic, temperature, tires, terrain, and driving style.
Which transmission is better for daily driving?
Why the SPT can be easier in traffic
The automatic removes repeated clutch-pedal work in stop-and-go conditions. You can leave it in automatic mode for routine commuting, then use paddles when you want a downshift or a more deliberate ratio. Automatic downshift blipping is designed to coordinate engine speed during those commanded changes.

This convenience is most relevant if your commute involves frequent queues, steep ramps, or interruptions that make repeated clutch engagement tiring. The available information does not quantify pedal effort, traffic comfort, ownership cost, reliability, resale value, or winter performance, so treat those as personal evaluation points rather than established advantages.
Why the manual can be better for an involved commute
The six-speed gives you a direct, repeatable relationship between shifter position and the selected gear. Drivers who prefer to choose every upshift, downshift, and engine-braking event may value that control even on ordinary roads. Because the manual is listed on Base, Premium, Limited, and tS, it also lets you prioritize a manual gearbox while choosing among more trims.
The trade-off is the work that comes with a clutch and manual shifts. Whether that is enjoyable or inconvenient depends on your traffic pattern, tolerance for repeated pedal use, and preference for active involvement.
Questions to answer on a test drive
- Can you operate the clutch smoothly in the traffic you drive most often?
- Does the SPT’s automatic mode respond naturally enough for your normal routes?
- Do the paddles fall comfortably under your fingers and make the manual mode useful?
- Can you select your preferred trim with the transmission you want?
- Will the car spend more time in stop-and-go traffic or on roads where selecting each gear is part of the appeal?

How to choose your WRX configuration
- Start with the transmission requirement. If you require a clutch pedal, limit your search to Base, Premium, Limited, and tS. If you want the SPT, focus on Limited or GT as listed by Subaru’s U.S. features page.
- Choose the trim independently. Do not use the GT’s 25 highway/18 city figure as a transmission conversion for another trim. It is a GT result.
- Set a fuel-economy expectation using the correct market. For a U.S. manual, begin with Subaru’s 26 highway/19 city listing. Use the Canadian L/100-km numbers only when discussing Canadian data.
- Drive both operating styles if possible. Test clutch takeoff, low-speed modulation, automatic response, paddle access, and manual-mode behavior on the roads you actually use.
- Verify the final vehicle. Check the model year, trim, transmission, equipment, fuel-economy label, and dealer inventory on the exact vehicle rather than relying on a generic listing.
Common mistakes when comparing the WRX manual and “CVT”
Calling every SPT a conventional eight-speed automatic
Subaru calls the unit the Subaru Performance Transmission. Its eight-speed manual mode is a programmed stepped mode within the CVT system. Describing it simply as an eight-speed automatic can misstate how it works.

Using the GT MPG as a universal automatic rating
The U.S. 25 highway/18 city figure is attached to the GT trim. It is not a controlled, same-trim transmission comparison and should not be presented as the SPT’s universal EPA result.

Converting Canadian numbers into U.S. EPA estimates
The Canadian 12.3/9.0 and 12.7/9.4 L/100-km values use a different national rating system. They can illustrate the direction of the published Canadian difference, but they cannot replace a U.S. EPA listing.
Transferring a 2025 test to the 2026 car
The 5.8-second manual test and 25-mpg overall result came from Consumer Reports’ 2025 WRX coverage. They are historical test observations, not 2026 specifications.
Assuming horsepower decides the transmission choice
Because both cars share the quoted engine output, horsepower alone does not answer questions about shift behavior, launch response, traffic effort, or driver involvement. Those require the transmission features and, for speed claims, a properly matched test.

Buying and ownership checks before signing
- Confirm that the vehicle is a 2026 model and identify its exact trim.
- Confirm “six-speed manual” or “Subaru Performance Transmission” on the build sheet.
- Read the vehicle’s fuel-economy label instead of applying a number from another trim or country.
- For an SPT car, verify that paddle shifters and the manual-mode controls operate as expected during the test drive.
- For a manual car, test clutch engagement from a stop, reverse maneuvering, hill starts, and low-speed traffic conditions.
- If buying accessories such as all-weather floor mats, verify exact 2026 model-year and trim fitment before ordering; a generic WRX description does not establish compatibility.
Bottom line: manual or SPT?
The six-speed manual is the better match for a buyer whose priority is direct gear selection, active shifting, and access to more 2026 WRX trims. The SPT is the better match for someone who wants automatic convenience but still wants paddle inputs, automatic downshift blipping, and a stepped manual mode. Both use the same 271-hp, 258-lb-ft turbo engine, and the available material does not prove a 2026 U.S. acceleration winner. For fuel economy, rely on the published 26 highway/19 city U.S. manual figure, treat the GT’s 25/18 as a trim-specific number, and keep Subaru Canada’s L/100-km figures separate from U.S. EPA data.
