Subaru introduced two distinct 2026 electric SUVs at the 2025 New York International Auto Show: a refreshed, more compact Solterra and the all-new, larger Trailseeker. Both have standard all-wheel drive and a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. The Solterra starts at $38,495 before destination and delivery; the Trailseeker starts at $39,995. Subaru estimates up to 288 miles of range for Solterra and about 280 miles for Trailseeker, while the Trailseeker adds more cargo room and a maximum 3,500-pound towing rating.
What Subaru unveiled for 2026
Subaru Corporation announced the updated Solterra and all-new Trailseeker on April 18, 2025, at the New York International Auto Show. The two battery-electric SUVs were jointly developed with Toyota. Subaru described the Trailseeker as a new addition to its EV lineup; the Solterra is a refreshed model.
The reveal announcement included development-stage estimates, including a 74.7-kWh battery for each vehicle and more than 260 miles of estimated Trailseeker range. Those early estimates were explicitly subject to change. For U.S. retail comparisons, the later Subaru of America pricing announcements give the more relevant specifications.

Which one fits your needs?
Choose the Solterra if compact size and range matter most
The Solterra is the smaller option and has the higher published maximum range estimate: up to 288 miles. Its four-trim lineup spans two power outputs, with the 233-hp versions at the lower end and the 338-hp XT versions at the upper end. Subaru lists 23.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 63.5 cubic feet with them folded.
Consider the Trailseeker for cargo and towing
The Trailseeker is more than six inches longer and nearly one inch taller than the Solterra, according to Subaru of America’s pricing announcement. It provides 32.2 cubic feet of rear cargo room and is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. Its standard dual motors produce 375 hp. Subaru’s range estimate is approximately 280 miles, with the current model page listing up to 281 miles.

These figures point to different priorities rather than a universal winner: the Solterra is the more compact choice, while the Trailseeker offers more rear cargo room and an established towing rating. Cargo figures are reported in different configurations—Solterra’s include a folded-seat maximum, while the Trailseeker figure is rear cargo room—so compare the layouts that match how you carry passengers and gear.
What range should buyers expect?
The figures are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees of real-world driving range. Subaru of America lists the Solterra at up to 288 miles and the Trailseeker at approximately 280 miles; the Trailseeker model page says up to 281 miles. Actual range can vary with configuration, driving conditions and other factors. The earlier April 2025 Trailseeker estimate of more than 260 miles was a development-stage figure, not the later retail estimate.

How charging works at home and on the road
Home charging
Subaru says both vehicles support Level 1 and Level 2 charging and include a dual-voltage charging cable. A separate Level 2 EV charger is an optional home upgrade, not a stated standard requirement. Installation may require electrical work and additional expense; check your home’s electrical capacity and vehicle compatibility before buying equipment.
Public charging and NACS
Both models have a NACS port. Subaru’s EV guide says compatible Subaru EVs can access more than 25,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, as well as compatible NACS, J1772 and CCS stations using included adapters. Network access and station compatibility depend on the charger and applicable service terms.

The starting MSRPs are before destination and delivery. Subaru’s announcements list a separate $1,450 charge, with specified state and Alaska variations. The trim prices provide a useful comparison, but they are not an out-the-door quote: local taxes, registration, dealer charges and any applicable offers can affect what a buyer pays.
