Subaru and Toyota are continuing an electric-vehicle collaboration that began in 2019—not launching a new partnership. The latest model announced together is Subaru’s three-row 2027 Getaway, which Subaru unveiled on April 2, 2026, with a U.S. release planned for late 2026. Separately, Subaru began building BEVs at its Yajima plant in February 2026, including the jointly developed Trailseeker.
What is the new EV project?
The newest jointly developed model in the announcements covered here is the Subaru 2027 Getaway, a three-row midsize SUV. Subaru unveiled it at the New York International Auto Show on April 2, 2026, and said it was planned for U.S. release in late 2026. Subaru identifies the range, power, and charging time as development estimates and says actual range and charging time vary with conditions. These are not independent test results or final EPA figures.
How did the Subaru–Toyota EV collaboration begin?
The companies announced the BEV collaboration on June 6, 2019. Their agreement called for a jointly developed battery-electric vehicle platform for midsize and large passenger vehicles and a C-segment BEV SUV to be sold under both brands. They said the work would combine Subaru’s all-wheel-drive technology with Toyota’s vehicle-electrification technology. The announcement built on business collaboration that began in 2005. That original agreement is the basis for the current EV partnership; the Getaway is a new model within the ongoing collaboration, not evidence of a newly formed alliance.
Which Subaru EVs have the companies announced together?
Subaru has identified the following models as jointly developed with Toyota in its U.S.-model announcements. The figures below are manufacturer development estimates, not measurements from a common independent test, so they should not be treated as directly comparable range results.

What does Subaru’s Yajima production announcement mean?
Subaru said on February 4, 2026, that BEV production had begun at its Gunma Yajima plant. The plant uses a mixed-model line capable of building BEVs, gasoline vehicles, and hybrids. This announcement establishes production of the Trailseeker at Yajima; it does not establish that every jointly developed Subaru EV is built there. The cited releases do not provide a complete, current production map for all the models.
What is known—and not known—about each company’s role?
The 2019 description assigns broad strengths: Subaru’s all-wheel-drive technology and Toyota’s vehicle-electrification technology. Later Subaru releases describe named vehicles as jointly developed and refer generally to combining the companies’ strengths. The cited announcements do not provide a part-by-part engineering or supplier breakdown. They therefore do not establish that the vehicles are identical in every respect or identify which company designed or supplied each battery, software system, or other component.

Which lineup and charging details apply in the United States?
Subaru’s U.S. EV lineup page lists the 2026 Solterra, 2027 Uncharted, 2027 Trailseeker, and 2028 Getaway. It also describes NACS compatibility and access to the Tesla Supercharger network for Subaru EVs. Because the lineup page is market- and model-year-specific, check the individual vehicle’s specifications and current availability before relying on a connector or charging-network detail for a particular car. Is the three-company engine initiative part of this EV project?
No. In May 2024, Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda announced a separate initiative to develop engines designed for integration with electric drive units and compatibility with carbon-neutral fuels.
