The redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness aims to make muddy trail access part of everyday driving, not a trade that demands a dedicated off-road SUV. In Byron Hurd’s event drive for The Drive, its adaptive suspension felt composed on pavement and its X-MODE traction settings helped it tackle slick, rutted ranch tracks. Subaru lists 260 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a 3,500-pound towing capacity for the U.S.-market Wilderness—but this first drive does not show it matching more specialized off-roaders on difficult terrain.
What changed for the 2026 Outback Wilderness?
Subaru gives the redesigned Wilderness a more upright look and retains the equipment that distinguishes it from a regular Outback: standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, increased ground clearance, all-terrain tires and a turbocharged engine. For the U.S. model, Subaru lists a 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER four-cylinder making 260 horsepower, 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a 3,500-pound towing capacity on its 2026 Outback Wilderness page.
Those specifications describe useful all-around capability, but they do not by themselves establish how the vehicle performs on technical trails. The most relevant evidence here is Hurd’s event drive, rather than an independent test or a long-term evaluation.
How does it drive on pavement?
Hurd’s Jan. 22, 2026, report for The Drive describes a composed ride on Sonoma County roads. The adaptive dampers controlled body motions, while the all-terrain tires were not especially intrusive with the windows up. That account suggests the Wilderness preserves much of the Outback’s everyday-road character despite its more rugged equipment; it is a journalist’s impression from an event drive, not a controlled comparison.

Turbo power and CVT trade-offs
The 260-hp turbo engine supplies the power for the Wilderness’s dual-purpose brief. Hurd reports that its 277 lb-ft of torque helps reduce ratio hunting from the continuously variable transmission, but the CVT remains perceptible and, in his view, more parasitic than a conventional automatic. The standard all-terrain tires add weight, offsetting some of the acceleration benefit of the Wilderness’s shorter gearing compared with a standard turbo Outback.
Is the 2026 Outback Wilderness good off road?
It showed useful traction in the conditions Hurd encountered, but the setting matters. After more than 40 inches of recent rain, his route included muddy, hilly ranch tracks with slippery ruts. He reports that Deep Snow/Mud X-MODE helped the Outback make progress; the mode holds lower ratios below its 25-mph cap and enables hill-descent control. That is evidence of confidence on muddy trails, not proof of capability on rock steps, severe articulation or other technical terrain.

Hurd’s conclusion is that the Wilderness will not match more dedicated off-road SUVs on difficult terrain. He frames its appeal instead as the combination of trail access and on-road refinement, rather than maximum off-road performance.
What does the Wilderness cost?
The Drive reported a U.S. base price of $46,445 and an as-tested price of $48,885 for the vehicle in its Jan. 22, 2026, first-drive article. Those are the publication’s article-date prices, not a current dealer quote; inventory, incentives and transaction prices can change. Hurd also noted that options could bring the Wilderness close to $50,000.

How does it compare with other outdoorsy SUVs?
Hurd names the Honda Passport TrailSport as a similarly conceived two-row unibody competitor and notes that the Ford Bronco Sport can offer a locking-differential-like rear differential at a similar upper price. His report does not provide a full head-to-head test, so those references are context, not a comparative ranking.
For harder off-road use, Hurd says the Outback Wilderness is not a match for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk or Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter, while offering more on-road refinement for less money. Buyers should treat that as his comparative judgment, not the result of a side-by-side evaluation. The Wilderness makes the most sense for drivers who value daily-road composure and occasional muddy-trail capability more than tackling demanding terrain.

What this first drive does—and does not—establish
The event drive offers a useful impression of how the Wilderness behaves on pavement and muddy hills. It does not establish long-term reliability, real-world fuel economy, independent braking or acceleration performance, or the vehicle’s limits on technical trails. Subaru’s U.S. page also lists “up to 27 MPG,” but does not provide the full city, highway and combined breakdown in the cited page excerpt, so that figure should not be treated as a complete fuel-economy rating.
Subaru Canada’s 2025 announcement describes Canadian-market equipment including adaptive dampers, Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires on 17-inch wheels, Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud X-MODE settings, and 241 mm of ground clearance. It also gives Canadian-market output as 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. Those details are specific to Canada and should not be substituted for U.S. specifications; see Subaru Canada’s announcement.
