The 2026 Subaru Outback is a complete, seventh-generation redesign with a new cabin and more upright styling, but its six-trim lineup does not map one-to-one to the 2025 range. U.S. starting MSRP is $34,995 for the Premium, and buyers can choose between a 180-hp 2.5-liter engine and a 260-hp turbo; the Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.
What’s new for the 2026 Subaru Outback?
Subaru describes the 2026 model as a complete redesign and the seventh generation of the Outback. The exterior takes on a taller, more upright profile with a redesigned grille; select versions offer newly available 19-inch wheels. Inside, the redesigned dashboard pairs a standard 12.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and physical climate-control buttons and dials remain available rather than putting every adjustment on the screen. Subaru’s Outback feature page outlines the equipment.
Subaru’s May 4, 2026 announcement says the cabin includes a headliner made from recycled plastic bottles and a front-passenger cord clip. Cargo capacity behind the rear seats is 34.6 cubic feet, which Subaru says is two cubic feet more than in the predecessor; cargo-area height increased by two inches and load-floor width is 43.3 inches. These are different measures from the 80.5 cubic feet of maximum cargo room with the rear seats folded. Passenger volume is listed as up to 112.3 cubic feet. Subaru’s announcement and its specifications page give those figures.
How much does the 2026 Subaru Outback cost?
Subaru’s current U.S. comparison lists these starting MSRPs. They are manufacturer-listed starting prices, not dealer quotes or out-the-door prices; taxes, fees, incentives, and local inventory can affect what a buyer pays. The lineup has six trims, with Wilderness positioned around off-road equipment and Touring trims emphasizing more upscale cabin appointments. Subaru’s trim comparison has the current list.

| Limited XT | $44,365 | 2.4L turbo, 260 hp | 21/29 | Turbo power with Limited equipment |
| Touring XT | $47,995 | 2.4L turbo, 260 hp | 21/29 | Turbo power with Touring amenities |
All six trims have standard Symmetrical AWD and a Lineartronic CVT. The MPG figures are Subaru-published estimates, shown here city/highway for readability; Subaru’s specifications page orders them highway/city. They are not independent test results. For buyers choosing between the Limited XT and Touring XT, the key distinction is equipment: both use the same turbo engine, while the Touring XT adds the Touring trim’s higher-end interior and comfort amenities. Subaru says the Touring and Touring XT were named to the 2026 Wards 10 Best Interiors & UX list; that recognition is an interior-focused signal, not a performance rating.
What engine is in the 2026 Outback?
Premium, Limited, and Touring use a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder rated by Subaru at 180 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT use a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine rated at 260 hp and 277 lb-ft. Subaru specifies both engines with the Lineartronic CVT and standard all-wheel drive. The turbo’s higher output is relevant for drivers who prioritize stronger published power figures or need one of the trims rated for greater towing capacity; the naturally aspirated trims have the higher published fuel-economy estimates.

Those are manufacturer specifications. The available figures do not establish independent acceleration, braking, or road-test performance, so they should not be read as measured comparisons.
How much can a 2026 Subaru Outback tow?
Subaru lists a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds for Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT. Premium, Limited, and Touring are listed at 2,700 pounds. The 3,500-pound figure is trim-specific, not a rating for every Outback. Check the vehicle’s documentation and the requirements for the trailer and any installed hitch before towing; Subaru identifies an accessory trailer hitch as available, and accessory fitment should be confirmed for the exact vehicle.

Which 2026 Outback is best for off-road driving?
The Wilderness is the lineup’s off-road-focused trim. Subaru lists 9.5 inches of ground clearance for it, along with a raised suspension, electronically controlled dampers, and all-terrain tires. The clearance figure is not a claim that every 2026 Outback trim sits that high. All trims have standard AWD, but the Wilderness is the one distinguished by this package of off-road hardware.
Subaru also says standard raised roof rails with tie-downs support gear such as cargo carriers, bikes, skis, and kayaks. An accessory carrier or hitch needs to be checked against the 2026 vehicle’s fitment and load limits rather than assumed compatible based on a broad product description.

Hands-Free Assist, Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection, and Automatic Emergency Steering are described as newly available features. Availability can vary by trim or equipment configuration; consult the current Subaru feature details for the specific vehicle.

How does the 2026 Outback compare with the 2025 model?
Subaru’s 2025 comparison listed a Base at $29,995, a Premium at $33,060, a Wilderness at $41,710, and other trims from $37,970 to $44,730. The 2026 range starts at $34,995, but it starts with Premium rather than Base and uses a six-trim lineup, while 2025 offered a Base and more named variants. The $5,000 difference between those listed entry prices is therefore a comparison across different lineups and equipment, not a same-trim price increase. See Subaru’s 2025 trim comparison.
The older 2.5-liter engine was listed at 182 hp and 176 lb-ft; the 2026 version is listed at 180 hp and 178 lb-ft. Those specification changes are modest, but the broader redesign also brings a new cabin layout, larger standard displays, and revised trim and powertrain choices. The listed prices and specifications are subject to change.
