Choose the 2026 Crosstrek if ground clearance, snow, rutted approaches, or uneven roads are priorities. Choose the 2026 Impreza if you want a lower hatchback and slightly more maximum cargo volume with the rear seats folded. Fuel economy depends on the exact powertrain: Crosstrek hybrid trims have the highest published figures, while the gas Impreza and gas Crosstrek are close. The useful comparison is therefore not a single winner, but how each model fits your roads, cargo configuration, and trim choice.
What is different about the 2026 Impreza and Crosstrek?
Subaru positions the Impreza as a compact hatchback and the Crosstrek as a compact crossover/SUV. That distinction explains most of the practical differences in this comparison. The Impreza’s lower body gives it a 5.1-inch ground-clearance specification, while every 2026 Crosstrek has substantially more clearance: 8.7 inches in standard form or 9.3 inches in Wilderness trim.

The Impreza’s other advantage is maximum enclosed cargo volume. Subaru lists 56.0 cubic feet behind the front seats when the Impreza’s rear seatbacks are folded. The listed Crosstrek maximum is 54.7 cubic feet for standard gas versions, 50.6 cubic feet for hybrid versions, and 54.9 cubic feet for Wilderness. Those figures are close, but they are not interchangeable: the Crosstrek values are maximum folded-seat capacities, and its capacity varies with powertrain and trim.

Subaru of America’s current 2026 specification pages and brochures are the appropriate references for these figures; the Impreza specification page was reviewed October 13, 2026. Trim names, equipment and measurements can change by model year, so a vehicle ordered later should be checked against its own window sticker and specification sheet.

Which has more cargo space?
Seats-up cargo: the Impreza figure is the one Subaru publishes here
Subaru lists 20.4 cubic feet of cargo space in the Impreza with the rear seats in place. That is the relevant number for a normal grocery run, luggage behind passengers, or a stroller when you still need the second row.

The cited 2026 Crosstrek material emphasizes maximum cargo volume with the rear seatbacks lowered rather than supplying a directly comparable seats-up figure. Because of that, it would be misleading to claim that either vehicle has more usable space behind occupied rear seats from the available numbers alone. If this configuration is your usual one, bring the items you carry most often to a dealer and check the hatch opening, floor length, and seatback angle.
Also note that a split-fold rear seat can make a bigger practical difference than a small headline-volume difference. One passenger may remain in the back while the other side carries a long case, box or sports item. The published totals do not describe every split-seat arrangement, so inspect the actual floor and latch positions in the trim you are considering.
Folded-seat cargo: Impreza has the largest listed maximum
| Configuration | Maximum cargo volume with rear seats folded |
|---|---|
| 2026 Impreza | 56.0 cu ft |
| 2026 Crosstrek, standard gas | 54.7 cu ft |
| 2026 Crosstrek, hybrid | 50.6 cu ft |
| 2026 Crosstrek Wilderness | 54.9 cu ft |
On Subaru’s published maximums, the Impreza leads a gas Crosstrek by 1.3 cubic feet, a Wilderness by 1.1 cubic feet, and a hybrid Crosstrek by 5.4 cubic feet. Those are simple differences between the stated capacities, not independent measurements.
The result does not mean every bulky object will fit better in the Impreza. A volume rating is a total, not a description of the opening’s width, height, wheel-well intrusion, or floor height. A tall box can favor the taller Crosstrek even when the Impreza’s maximum cubic-foot number is higher. Measure the object and compare the actual hatch openings before buying if your cargo is unusually long, tall, or rigid.

- Floor Mats for Subaru Crosstrek: Floor liners are compatible with 2024 Crosstrek & Impreza.
- All Weather and Safe TPE Material: Floor mats for Crosstrek are made of TPE materials featuring waterproof, durable, wear-resistant, non-slip and odorless. High tensity and safe TPE material keeps its flexibility in all season while still offering an excellent feel and extreme wear resistance.
- Non-slip and Trap Debris: Textured, skid-resistant surfacing floor mats ensure driving safety. The floor liners for Subaru Crosstrek are also designed with unique channels to effectively trap sand, water, mud, dirt, rain, muck, and any other mess. Keep your car clean and dry.
- Raised Edge All Round: Digital 3D laser scanning makes these mats perfectly compatible with your vehicle. The floor liners have raised edges all the way around to stop liquids and debris from reaching your original floor. Make sure the mess stays on the floor liner and off your original clean floorboard.
- Super Easy to Clean: The waterproof floor mats can be simply cleaned by wiping, hosing off, or using soap and water. *Attention: The floor mats are folded for shipping. Just place it under the sun to help get the creases out.
Powertrain hardware can also change the available shape inside the cargo area, as the hybrid’s lower published maximum demonstrates. Do not assume that a hybrid and gas Crosstrek have identical floors simply because they share a model name. Ask to see the exact vehicle, lower the seatbacks yourself, and check whether your cargo can lie flat without contacting the hatch.
How to compare cargo capacity without being misled
- Write down whether you need the rear seats occupied, split-folded, or completely lowered.
- Compare the same seat configuration on both vehicles. A seats-up figure and a folded-seat maximum answer different questions.
- Check the dimensions that cubic feet do not reveal: hatch aperture, load-floor length, height to the roof, and the step over the bumper.
- Test your largest regular item in the exact trim. The Crosstrek’s published maximum changes between gas, hybrid, and Wilderness versions.
- Measure the item diagonally as well as straight across. A hatch opening can prevent an object from entering even when the calculated interior volume appears sufficient.
- Account for passengers, child seats and tie-down space. Maximum volume assumes the rear seatbacks are down and does not represent a fully occupied cabin.
How much ground clearance does each vehicle have?
Impreza: 5.1 inches
The 2026 Impreza’s published ground clearance is 5.1 inches. That lower stance can be useful for drivers who prefer a hatchback driving position and do most of their miles on maintained pavement, but it leaves less vertical margin for deep snow, steep driveway transitions, rocks, or a rutted trail.
Crosstrek: 8.7 inches standard, 9.3 inches in Wilderness
The standard 2026 Crosstrek is specified at 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Crosstrek Wilderness is specified at 9.3 inches. Subaru measures these figures at base curb weight, so the clearance is a published baseline rather than a promise that the same gap remains under every passenger and cargo load.
Compared directly with the Impreza, the standard Crosstrek has 3.6 inches more clearance (8.7 minus 5.1). Wilderness has 4.2 inches more (9.3 minus 5.1). These are arithmetic differences from Subaru’s specifications, not measurements taken by an independent tester.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Because the measurements use base curb weight, carrying several passengers, a full cargo area or heavy equipment can reduce the effective gap. The published number remains useful for comparing the models, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed minimum in every loaded condition. Approach speed and the shape of the road still matter even with more clearance.
What the clearance gap changes in daily driving
- Snow and unpaved roads: More clearance gives the Crosstrek more room before packed snow, gravel ridges, or a raised center track contacts the underside.
- Driveway and trail approaches: The taller Crosstrek is the safer choice when breakover or approach conditions are a regular concern.
- Loading height: The Impreza’s lower body can make it easier to lift heavy items into the hatch, while the Crosstrek’s taller body may require a higher reach.
- Vehicle use: Clearance does not turn either model into an unrestricted off-road vehicle. Tires, traction, weather, driver judgment, and the road surface still determine what is safe.
- Parking and garage access: A roof-mounted load raises the vehicle farther, so measure the total height if you use crossbars or a rack and regularly enter a low garage.

| Model or version | Highway estimate | City estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impreza Sport | 33 mpg | 27 mpg | Highest city estimate among the listed non-hybrid versions. |
| Impreza RS | 33 mpg | 26 mpg | Matches the listed gas Crosstrek figures. |
| Crosstrek gas trims | 33 mpg | 26 mpg | Comparable on paper with the Impreza RS. |
| Crosstrek hybrid trims | 36 mpg | 36 mpg | Highest published highway and city estimates in the lineup. |
| Crosstrek Wilderness | 29 mpg | 24 mpg | Lowest listed estimates here; its configuration prioritizes other capabilities. |
There is no universal Crosstrek fuel-economy advantage. The hybrid has the clear published advantage, the gas Crosstrek is essentially aligned with the Impreza RS, and Wilderness is lower than both. Actual mileage varies with speed, temperature, traffic, tire pressure, payload, terrain, and driving style, so treat these numbers as a consistent way to compare official estimates rather than a guarantee of what your fuel log will show.
Use the same highway/city order when comparing labels and online tables. A listing that reverses the order can make an unchanged figure look different. For a fair shopping comparison, record the exact trim, drivetrain and wheel or tire package shown on the vehicle’s specification sheet, then compare those like-for-like entries.
Why trim and powertrain matter more than the badge
Comparing “Impreza” with “Crosstrek” without naming the version hides the largest differences. The Impreza values above distinguish Sport and RS for economy. The Crosstrek cargo maximum changes between gas, hybrid, and Wilderness, while clearance changes between standard Crosstrek and Wilderness. A buyer who needs the hybrid’s 36/36 mpg should not use the gas model’s 54.7-cubic-foot cargo maximum, and a buyer considering Wilderness should use its own 54.9-cubic-foot and 29/24-mpg figures.
Use this order when narrowing a purchase:
- Start with the road: If snow depth, rough approaches, or uneven surfaces are routine, the Crosstrek’s 8.7- or 9.3-inch specification is the decisive filter.
- Define the load: Decide whether your normal cargo rides behind passengers or with the rear seats folded. The Impreza’s 20.4-cubic-foot seats-up figure and 56.0-cubic-foot maximum answer different needs.
- Select the powertrain: For the highest published economy, compare Crosstrek hybrid trims. For gas versions, the Impreza RS and Crosstrek gas figure are both listed at 33/26 mpg.
- Verify the exact trim: Confirm the specification sheet for the model year and version you are ordering; Subaru can change trim offerings and measurements between years.
- Perform a physical check: Open the hatch, fold the seats, sit in the driver position and test your gear. Published cubic feet and clearance are comparison tools, not substitutes for checking fit.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the 2026 Impreza when these priorities lead
- You spend nearly all of your time on paved roads and do not need extra underbody clearance.
- You prefer the lower profile and hatchback form.
- You regularly fold the rear seats and want the largest published maximum: 56.0 cubic feet.
- You are comparing gas versions and the Impreza Sport’s 33/27-mpg estimate suits your use.
- A lower lift-in height is more useful to you than the Crosstrek’s additional space beneath the body.
Choose the 2026 Crosstrek when these priorities lead
- You deal with snow, gravel, rutted roads, steep transitions, or uneven surfaces often enough that 5.1 inches is a concern.
- You want standard 8.7-inch clearance or the 9.3-inch Wilderness specification.
- You want access to the Crosstrek hybrid’s published 36/36-mpg estimates.
- You need a taller crossover body, even though the published folded-seat maximum is slightly below the Impreza’s in the listed versions.
- Your gear is tall or awkwardly shaped and benefits from a taller hatch opening, subject to an in-person fit check.
Carrying bulky gear outside the cabin
If your equipment does not fit inside either hatch, Subaru lists roof crossbar mounting points for the Impreza. Crosstrek versions can be equipped with raised roof rails and available Thule racking accessories. Treat these as optional cargo-carrying solutions, not as extra interior volume.
Verify year, trim, roof configuration, weight limits, and installation instructions before purchasing any compatible roof rack or crossbar. Fitment can differ between the Impreza and Crosstrek and between model years. A roof solution also changes the vehicle’s exterior height and can affect wind noise, fuel consumption, and clearance in garages.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep roof-mounted gear within the rack and vehicle limits, secure it before every trip, and recheck fasteners after installation. The available information identifies mounting points and accessory families, but it does not establish a specific crossbar SKU, price, load rating for every trim, or eligibility for a particular retailer program. Confirm those details with Subaru or the rack manufacturer for the vehicle you are buying.
Common comparison mistakes
Mixing seat positions
Comparing the Impreza’s 20.4 cubic feet with seats up against a Crosstrek maximum measured with the rear seatbacks lowered makes the Crosstrek appear less practical than the evidence shows. Keep the seat position in every cargo statement.

Treating official MPG as a test result
The 33/27, 33/26, 36/36, and 29/24 figures are estimates. They do not establish what every owner will achieve, and no independent instrumented fuel-economy testing is represented here.
Assuming all Crosstreks have the same clearance and cargo volume
Standard Crosstrek clearance is 8.7 inches; Wilderness is 9.3 inches. Maximum cargo is 54.7 cubic feet for listed gas versions, 50.6 for the hybrid, and 54.9 for Wilderness. Identify the version before using a number in a buying decision.

Subaru’s direct Impreza-versus-Crosstrek comparison page is labeled 2025. It can provide broad body-style context, but its 2025 fuel economy, cargo, clearance, pricing, or other specifications should not be carried into a 2026 comparison.
Assuming a larger number guarantees easier loading
Cubic-foot capacity does not reveal the hatch aperture, floor height or shape around the wheel wells. A lower Impreza floor may be easier for heavy items, while the Crosstrek’s taller body may accept a tall item more readily. Test the object instead of relying on the largest headline number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line for the 2026 comparison
The Crosstrek is the clear choice for extra clearance: 8.7 inches standard and 9.3 inches in Wilderness versus 5.1 inches for the Impreza. The Impreza counters with the larger listed folded-seat maximum, 56.0 cubic feet, while Crosstrek maximums range from 50.6 to 54.9 cubic feet depending on powertrain and trim. For fuel economy, the Crosstrek hybrid leads at a published 36/36 mpg, gas versions are close to the Impreza RS at 33/26, and Wilderness is lower at 29/24. Match the exact trim to your roads and cargo configuration rather than choosing by model name alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Crosstrek bigger than the Impreza inside?
The published maximum folded-seat figures are close: 56.0 cubic feet for the Impreza, 54.7 for a gas Crosstrek, 50.6 for a hybrid Crosstrek and 54.9 for Wilderness. Subaru’s cited 2026 material does not provide a directly comparable Crosstrek seats-up figure, so physical testing is the fairest way to compare passenger-ready cargo space.
Which has more cargo space with the seats folded?
The 2026 Impreza has the largest listed maximum at 56.0 cubic feet. That is 1.3 cubic feet more than the gas Crosstrek, 1.1 more than Wilderness and 5.4 more than the hybrid. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

How much ground clearance does the 2026 Impreza have?
Subaru specifies 5.1 inches for the 2026 Impreza. The figure is measured at base curb weight and is therefore a comparison baseline, not a guaranteed gap under every passenger and cargo load.
How much ground clearance does the 2026 Crosstrek have?
The standard 2026 Crosstrek is specified at 8.7 inches, while Crosstrek Wilderness is specified at 9.3 inches. That gives the standard model 3.6 inches more than the Impreza and Wilderness 4.2 inches more.
Is the Crosstrek better on gas than the Impreza?
Only some versions are. Crosstrek hybrid trims have the highest listed estimates at 36 mpg highway and 36 city. Gas Crosstrek trims are listed at 33/26, matching the Impreza RS; Impreza Sport is listed at 33/27. Wilderness is listed at 29/24.
Recommended Free Tools
Do the official MPG numbers show what I will actually get?
No. The figures are Subaru and EPA estimates. Traffic, speed, temperature, tire pressure, payload, terrain and driving style can change actual mileage, so use the numbers for consistent trim-to-trim comparison rather than as a guarantee.
Can I use the same cargo number for every Crosstrek?
No. The listed maximum is 54.7 cubic feet for standard gas versions, 50.6 for hybrid versions and 54.9 for Wilderness. Identify the powertrain and trim before comparing cargo.
Can I add a roof rack to carry gear?
Subaru lists roof crossbar mounting points for the Impreza and raised roof rails plus available Thule racking accessories for Crosstrek versions. Verify year, trim, roof configuration, weight limits and fitment before buying, and remember that a rack changes vehicle height, wind noise and potentially fuel consumption.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2026 Crosstrek delivers 8.7 inches of standard clearance (9.3 in Wilderness), while the Impreza has the largest listed folded-seat cargo maximum at 56.0 cubic feet. Crosstrek hybrid trims lead the published economy figures at 36/36 mpg; gas versions are close to the Impreza RS, and Wilderness uses more fuel. Choose by road conditions, seat configuration and exact trim.
