How does the Slavia automatic perform in city traffic?
Pulling away from a standstill
Autocar India’s 2026 drive found the new gearbox more controlled as the car moved away from rest. That is the moment that exposes an automatic’s calibration most clearly: the transmission must release the brake, engage drive and feed torque without a sudden lurch. The reviewer’s description indicates that the AQ300 manages this transition with less abruptness than the outgoing unit.
This does not mean the car will feel identical in every situation. A steep ramp, a cold powertrain, a full passenger load or a sharply applied accelerator can all change the sensation. The published road test was a brief drive rather than a controlled measurement, so it establishes an impression of improved control rather than a quantified reduction in jerk or response time.
Stop-and-go crawling
India Today reported that closer gear steps make shifts nearly seamless in city traffic and that the previous low-speed hesitation is almost gone. In practical terms, the car should require fewer corrections when traffic repeatedly alternates between crawling and short bursts of movement. The torque converter also allows the engine to remain coupled progressively as you ease off the brake, rather than demanding the precise pedal timing that a hesitant calibration can require.

The reports do not provide a jerk index, shift-time data or a sample size beyond the test cars. A buyer should therefore treat the improvement as credible early feedback, while still driving the exact vehicle and trim before ordering.
Shifts once the car is moving
Autocar India found the upshifts smooth and seamless after the initial launch. The same test praised the speed of manual interventions through the steering-wheel paddles or the Tiptronic lever. That gives the driver a useful way to hold a lower gear for a short overtake, a flyover or a descent instead of waiting for an automatic downshift.

The eight ratios are relatively short. Autocar observed that third gear runs to just above 100km/h, while eighth gear turns the engine at a little over 2,000rpm at 100km/h. Those observations are from the test drive, not manufacturer specifications. In urban use, the closer steps can keep the 1.0-litre engine nearer its useful response without a large gap between gears; on an open road, the short lower ratios can make the transmission feel busy if you accelerate firmly.
Is the Slavia 1.0 automatic smooth in bumper-to-bumper traffic?
Based on the two 2026 road tests, yes: the new 1.0 TSI automatic is smoother and easier to modulate at low speeds than the previous Slavia automatic. The strongest evidence is not a claimed performance figure but the consistent description of better pull-away control, nearly seamless shifts and reduced hesitation.
The outgoing 2022 Slavia 1.0 automatic provides useful historical context. Autocar India described its AQ250 as having sudden initial creep that demanded careful brake modulation. It also reported early upshifts that could leave the engine below 1,800rpm, making acceleration into a traffic gap feel less brisk. Sport mode or manual intervention could help. Those findings belong to the old six-speed car and should not be carried forward as a criticism of the AQ300.
For a daily commute, the relevant distinction is therefore calibration rather than the number of gears alone. The current transmission appears to meter the first few metres more predictably and to use its closer ratios with less noticeable interruption. Whether that remains true after years of heat cycles, clutch and brake wear, or heavy urban use is not established by the available reports.
1.0 torque converter or 1.5 DSG: which is better for your city?
The two automatic Slavia powertrains solve different problems. The 1.0 TSI is the smoothness-first choice; the 1.5 TSI is the performance-first choice. Neither transmission can be declared the universal winner from the available evidence.

Choose the 1.0 automatic when urban smoothness is the priority
The 1.0 makes the most sense if your driving consists mainly of dense traffic, frequent junctions and repeated crawling. Its torque-converter layout and the reported AQ300 calibration address exactly the weakness identified in the old car: inconsistent low-speed engagement. The lower output also means you should leave more room when joining a fast-moving lane or climbing with passengers.

The 1.5 produces 35hp and 72Nm more than the 1.0, and Autocar India describes it as the stronger, more effortless performer. That extra reserve is useful for quick merges, full-load driving and frequent highway travel. It comes with a seven-speed DSG rather than the 1.0’s torque converter, so its response and low-speed feel should be judged on an individual test drive rather than assumed from the 1.0’s behavior.
What do the gear ratios feel like in everyday driving?
The AQ300’s short lower gearing is noticeable in two ways. First, the transmission has more intermediate steps available while accelerating through urban speeds, reducing the size of each ratio change. That supports the near-seamless shift impression reported by India Today. Second, the engine can run at a relatively low speed in the highest gear once you are cruising.
Autocar India recorded a little over 2,000rpm at 100km/h in eighth gear. This is a single road-test observation, not a fixed specification: tyre size, load, road gradient and speedometer variation can alter the displayed result. The same test placed the top of third gear just above 100km/h, showing that the car does not hold a very tall third gear for extended high-speed running.
In city conditions, these ratios should make it easier for the gearbox to select an appropriate step without a dramatic jump in engine speed. If you use the paddles, the relatively close spacing also lets you make smaller, more controlled changes. The trade-off is that assertive acceleration can produce several quick shifts in succession, which some drivers will notice more than a conventional six-speed’s larger, slower steps.

What is known about fuel economy?
No independently published, named statistic specifically measures the 2026 Slavia 1.0 AQ300’s city fuel consumption in the reviewed material. Autocar India said its brief facelift drive did not allow a fuel-efficiency test. That means a precise km/l claim for the new automatic would be misleading.
Autocar’s 2022 test of the previous Slavia 1.0 automatic recorded 10.5km/l in the city and 13.4km/l on the highway under that test’s conditions. Those figures belong to the old AQ250 transmission, the earlier test route and its particular traffic, weather, fuel and driving style. They are not a forecast for the AQ300.
The same publication reports fuel figures for the Kushaq facelift because it considers that model mechanically identical, but those numbers are not Slavia test results and should not be relabelled as such. Until a named test measures the new Slavia in comparable traffic, buyers should treat mileage as an open question and budget using their own commute rather than a published headline number.

Not yet in Slavia-specific real-world evidence. The 2026 reports are short road tests focused on driving impressions. They do not document high-mileage ownership, repair rates, service intervals, fluid replacement costs or failures of the AQ300 in this model.
That limitation does not indicate a known defect. It simply means the transmission is too new in this application for a defensible long-term verdict. A buyer keeping the car for many years should ask the dealer for the scheduled maintenance requirements, warranty terms and the procedure for handling transmission software updates or warning lights. Those details can vary by market and should be confirmed in the written documents for the vehicle you are purchasing.

How to test the Slavia automatic in real city conditions
A short dealership loop can miss the behavior that matters most. Ask for a route that includes a ramp, a congested junction and a section where you can safely accelerate into a gap. Use the following sequence:
- Confirm the car’s specification. Check that the test vehicle is the 1.0 TSI with the eight-speed automatic, not an older six-speed Slavia or the 1.5 DSG. The transmission selector and vehicle documentation should match the model year being quoted.
- Begin with a cold powertrain if possible. Notice how drive engages when you release the brake gently. Look for a predictable take-off rather than a sudden lurch or a delayed surge.
- Repeat a crawl-and-stop cycle. In a safe, low-speed area, alternate between easing off the brake, stopping and moving again. This is the situation in which the old car’s creep and hesitation were most apparent.
- Try a moderate traffic-gap acceleration. Apply the accelerator progressively, not flat-out, and observe whether the gearbox selects a useful ratio without a long pause. Repeat with passengers or luggage if those are part of your normal use.

Škoda’s October 6, 2026 announcement gives the 1.0 automatic a starting reference of ₹12,49,000 ex-showroom for the Classic+ 1.0 AT. It also lists the Prestige 1.5 DSG at ₹18,59,000 ex-showroom. The announcement says automatic variants are available in several trims, but local stock and final pricing can change.

Who should buy the 2026 Slavia 1.0 automatic?
