Both body styles can be paired with a manual or automatic transmission, and Shelby lists the same 480- or 810-horsepower engine choices for the range. The decisive question is therefore how you intend to use the car: do you specifically want open-air driving, or do you prefer the fixed-roof fastback’s traditional Shelby silhouette? Shelby has not published enough model-specific data to prove a difference in cargo space, curb weight, structural rigidity, roof-operation mechanics, ride quality or track performance, so those assumptions should not determine your purchase until a dealer supplies verified figures.
What the 2026 Shelby GT350 actually is
The name spans two very different eras. Shelby American says the original Shelby Mustang GT350 was produced from 1965 through 1970. The current car is a revived 2026 GT350, not a continuation of the original production run. Shelby’s current announcement calls the fixed-roof version a fastback; shoppers who search for “coupe” are generally referring to this same coupe-style configuration.

Shelby describes the 2026 GT350 as a modified Ford Mustang with suspension, exhaust, cooling and aerodynamic enhancements. Whipple, Borla and Michelin are identified as collaborators. Shelby’s published information establishes the body styles, transmissions, horsepower ratings and purchase framework, but it does not provide an independent instrumented comparison between the fastback and convertible.
Fastback versus convertible: the facts Shelby confirms
| Decision point | Fastback (coupe-style) | Convertible |
|---|---|---|
| Body configuration | Fixed-roof fastback | Open-top convertible |
| Transmission | Manual or automatic | Manual or automatic |
| Engine outputs listed by Shelby | 480 hp or 810 hp | 480 hp or 810 hp |
| Example price supplied by Shelby | $121,385 for a nicely equipped supercharged fastback | $127,884 for the convertible |
| 2026 production statement | Fewer than 1,000 street cars, according to Shelby | |
| Warranty statement | Shelby states a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty; Ford’s powertrain warranty remains intact | |
The two quoted prices are not a controlled comparison. Shelby’s $121,385 figure describes a “nicely equipped supercharged fastback,” while the $127,884 figure is identified for the convertible. The $6,499 difference may reflect equipment, the body style, or both; it should not be treated as a verified convertible premium.

Choose the convertible when open-air driving is the point
You want a different driving experience, not merely another specification
A convertible is the logical choice if lowering the roof is central to why you want a GT350. It gives you the option to drive with the sky open on suitable roads and close the roof when weather, temperature or highway noise makes a fixed cabin preferable. That flexibility is a lifestyle benefit rather than a performance claim: Shelby does not quantify the roof’s operating time, storage arrangement, wind noise or weather sealing.
Your routes and climate make roof-down use realistic
Think about the roads and seasons in which you will actually use the car. A convertible makes more sense for scenic weekend drives, warm-weather commuting and events where open-air motoring is part of the appeal. If your local climate keeps the roof closed for most of the year, the extra body-style choice may deliver little practical value. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the roof operation and explain any temperature, speed or maintenance guidance for the specific car.
You accept that the price example is higher, without assuming why
In Shelby’s published examples, the convertible is listed at $127,884 and the supercharged fastback at $121,385. Because the builds are not matched line by line, compare window stickers before deciding whether the convertible costs more for the body configuration itself. Request the exact equipment list, destination charges, taxes, registration and any dealer-installed work in writing.
Choose the fastback when the fixed-roof form fits your priorities
You prefer the classic Shelby profile
The fastback is the fixed-roof, coupe-style GT350 and is the closest match to what many enthusiasts picture when they hear “Mustang fastback.” Select it if the long-roof silhouette, enclosed cabin and traditional Shelby appearance matter more to you than roof-down driving.
You do not need an open-top option
If you expect to keep the roof closed, the fastback avoids paying for a feature you will rarely use. That is a value judgment based on your habits, not evidence that the fastback is lighter, stiffer, quieter or quicker. Shelby has not released model-specific figures establishing those differences for the 2026 GT350.

- Genuine Factory Part
You are comparing a particular fastback build
The fastback example supplied by Shelby is specifically described as nicely equipped and supercharged. Confirm whether the car you are considering is delivered with the same equipment and whether the supercharger was installed before or after the vehicle was titled. A lower or higher transaction price can result from the build, dealer charges or timing rather than the roof configuration.
Manual or automatic: a separate decision from body style
Both the 2026 GT350 fastback and convertible can be ordered with a manual or automatic transmission. Decide the transmission independently of the roof choice. A convertible is not restricted to one gearbox, and a fastback is not restricted to the other.

- Choose the automatic if you prefer two-pedal driving in traffic or want the car to manage gear changes for you.
- Confirm the exact transmission on the order sheet. Shelby confirms availability but does not state gear counts, ratios, shift times or acceleration differences.
Do not let a body-style comparison obscure this equipment choice. A manual convertible and an automatic fastback are different combinations, and any fair price or driving comparison should hold the transmission and major options constant.
480 hp or 810 hp: understand what the output figures mean
The two ratings Shelby lists
Shelby lists 5.0-liter V8 versions rated at 480 horsepower or 810 horsepower. Those are manufacturer-stated outputs for the 2026 offering. Shelby does not provide acceleration times, top speed, dyno methodology, fuel requirements, emissions details or a body-style-by-body-style performance test.
The 810-hp supercharger qualification
Shelby says the supercharger is available for post-title sales. That wording matters: it should not be read as proof that every 810-hp GT350 leaves the dealer as a completed, factory-style 810-hp package. Before signing, ask whether the advertised output applies to the vehicle as delivered, what work is performed after title, who performs it, how it is documented and how it affects warranty coverage.

Match the power package to your use
The higher-output version may appeal to buyers who want the most extreme specification, while the 480-hp version may be the more straightforward choice for road use. Shelby does not establish a fuel-economy, tire-life, heat-management or maintenance comparison between them. Treat the horsepower number as one part of the specification, not as a substitute for confirming the complete build and support arrangements.
Price, ordering and limited availability
Use Shelby’s figures as examples, not quotes for every car
For the 2026 model year, Shelby gives these examples:
| Example | Price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Fastback | $121,385 | Shelby describes this as a nicely equipped supercharged fastback |
| Convertible | $127,884 | Shelby’s example price; Shelby’s published information does not establish an identical equipment list to the fastback |
These numbers are not a nationwide transaction-price survey and do not establish taxes, registration, destination, financing, dealer markups or optional equipment. Obtain a current buyer’s order for the exact vehicle and location.
Production is limited
Shelby says fewer than 1,000 2026 street cars will be built. That statement describes the total street-car run, not a published split between fastbacks and convertibles or between transmissions and horsepower levels. Scarcity can affect dealer availability and asking prices, but no reliable body-style allocation is supplied here.
Where to start an order
Shelby identifies Shelby-selected Ford dealers as the United States sales channel. Contact those dealers rather than assuming that any Ford showroom can place a GT350 order. Ask for current allocation status, the build combinations still available, deposit and cancellation terms, estimated delivery timing and whether the vehicle will be titled before any supercharger work.

Warranty and documentation questions to ask before payment
Shelby says each vehicle is documented in its official Shelby Registry and lists a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. Shelby also says Ford’s powertrain warranty remains intact. These are Shelby’s stated terms; have the selling dealer provide the actual warranty documents and explain which company covers each component.
- Which parts of the car are covered by Shelby’s warranty, and from what in-service date does the term run?
- What mileage and time limits apply, and are there separate terms for the supercharger or other post-title modifications?
- How is the Shelby Registry entry created, and when will you receive confirmation?
- Which Ford powertrain components retain Ford coverage after the Shelby conversion?
- What maintenance records, approved fluids, tire specifications and service intervals are required to preserve coverage?
Keep the window sticker, signed build sheet, invoices, warranty booklet and Registry documentation together. Those records matter for future service and for proving exactly which configuration you purchased.
What has not been established about fastback-versus-convertible behavior
Shelby has not published model-specific numbers for the following items:
- curb weight or weight distribution;
- cargo capacity with the roof up or down;
- torsional rigidity or other chassis-stiffness measurements;
- roof-opening and closing time, mechanism details or storage space;
- ride comfort, wind noise or weather sealing;
- independent acceleration, braking, lap-time or handling comparisons;
- how the two bodies affect tire wear, fuel economy or cooling in real-world use.
Do not convert familiar coupe-versus-convertible generalizations into GT350 facts. A salesperson may be able to provide a specification sheet, demonstrate the roof and arrange a drive, but those observations should be tied to the exact 2026 car and equipment level. If a dealer quotes a weight, capacity or performance number, ask for its source and measurement conditions.
A disciplined way to compare two actual cars
- Define the body you truly want. Write down whether open-air driving is essential, occasional or irrelevant. That answer determines whether the convertible feature has real value to you.
- Hold the transmission constant. Compare manual with manual or automatic with automatic so the roof decision is not mixed with a gearbox decision.
- Hold the power package constant. Compare two 480-hp cars or two 810-hp cars, and record whether the supercharger is installed before or after title.
- Match every option and charge. Place the two window stickers side by side, including wheels, tires, cooling, exhaust, aerodynamic parts, destination, documentation fees and dealer-installed work.
- Inspect the convertible in person. Operate the roof through a complete cycle, check the seals and confirm how much usable luggage space remains in the configuration you will use.
- Request written warranty terms. Verify Shelby coverage, Ford powertrain coverage, post-title work and Registry documentation before leaving a deposit.
- Check allocation and timing. Because Shelby says fewer than 1,000 street cars are planned, confirm that the dealer has an actual allocation and identify the cancellation and delivery provisions.
- Choose based on verified differences only. If a claimed advantage is not on the specification sheet, warranty documents or a demonstrable vehicle feature, label it unconfirmed rather than paying for an assumption.
How the 2026 car connects to GT350 history
Shelby American says Lee Iacocca asked Carroll Shelby to develop the Mustang’s performance image, leading to the 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350. The company reports that the original model was produced from 1965 through 1970 and that the 1965 GT350 won the SCCA B Production National Championship.
Shelby’s 2026 announcement also says Carroll Shelby built a handful of GT350 convertibles for 1966. It does not establish a precise production count, so claims about an exact number of historical convertibles should be treated as unverified from Shelby’s announcement. The existence of those early cars provides useful context for the name, but it does not prove that the 2026 convertible has the same specifications, rarity or collector status.
Which 2026 GT350 should you buy?
Pick the convertible if
- open-air driving is a primary reason you want the car;
- you will use the roof-down option often enough to justify its cost and complexity;
- you have inspected the roof operation and confirmed the exact equipment and warranty terms;
- you are comfortable evaluating a higher example price without assuming the entire difference is a body-style charge.
Pick the fastback if
- you want the fixed-roof fastback appearance and do not need open-air motoring;
- your priority is a specific equipment or power build rather than roof operation;
- you prefer to avoid paying for a feature you expect to leave unused;
- the dealer can document the complete build, title status and warranty coverage at the quoted price.
There is no evidence here that one body is universally faster, stronger, roomier or more practical. The defensible decision is personal: choose the convertible for its open-top capability, or choose the fastback for its fixed-roof form, then compare transmission, horsepower package, price and warranty on an equal equipment basis.
