These are manufacturer-published maximums and comparison figures, not guarantees for every truck or results from a standardized independent cargo test. Cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, packages, and other equipment can change ratings. Chevrolet’s comparison identifies a Multi-Flex Tailgate as available; check the selected truck’s configuration for availability.
How to compare towing capacity for your trailer
The Silverado’s published maximum is 1,690 lb higher than the Ram’s. That difference matters only if the specific Silverado configuration you are considering is rated for your trailer’s loaded weight. Ram’s 2026 towing guide breaks ratings down by engine, axle ratio, cab, bed, and drivetrain, and says its figures comply with SAE J2807. The 11,610-lb Ram maximum applies only to listed configurations; it is not a rating for every Ram 1500.
Ram’s published engine-level maximums also show why a single headline can be misleading:

These are engine-level maxima in Ram’s 2026 capability materials, not a promise that each engine reaches both figures on the same build. Ram notes that options, equipment, passengers, and cargo can affect payload and towing weights.
Check the actual loaded combination
Before choosing either truck, compare the trailer’s loaded weight with the rating for the exact truck configuration. Then check payload separately: occupants, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue weight all use the truck’s payload capacity. Ram’s guide states that trailer weight and payload ratings are mutually exclusive and warns not to exceed GVWR, GAWR, or GCWR. These limits and the applicable manufacturer instructions govern the specific vehicle and hitch.

Ram’s guide calculates conventional-hitch tongue weight at 10% in its chart and lists a 1,100-lb tongue-weight limit for its Class IV hitch receiver. Those figures describe the guide’s context; they are not universal limits for every truck, receiver, or trailer. Check the labels and manuals for the truck and towing equipment you will use.
A practical rating check
- Identify the exact truck’s engine, drivetrain, cab, bed, axle ratio, and towing package; use the manufacturer’s rating for that combination.
- Read the payload label on the specific truck’s door jamb rather than relying on the model’s maximum payload headline.
- Account for occupants, cargo, and accessories, then include the trailer’s tongue weight in the payload calculation.
- Check the applicable truck, receiver, axle, tire, and trailer limits in their labels and manuals. A tongue-weight scale can help measure tongue load, but it does not increase any rating.
Bed space and storage for everyday use
In Chevrolet’s published comparison, Silverado has larger listed cargo volume for each bed size shown. The comparison gives Silverado long, regular, and short-bed figures, but only regular and short-bed figures for Ram; it does not provide a Ram long-bed volume. Treat these as the manufacturers’ comparison figures, not as a standardized independent test.

Storage solutions differ beyond the bed itself. Chevrolet lists the available Multi-Flex Tailgate, which has six functions. Ram’s 2026 brochure highlights available RamBox cargo management and in-floor storage on Crew Cab models. These may suit different routines—for example, organizing smaller items separately from bed cargo—but availability depends on the chosen configuration. Check the exact cab, bed, and trim before comparing them.
Towing aids and driver assistance
Chevrolet lists available Super Cruise with trailering for the Silverado. Ram’s 2026 brochure lists available towing aids including Trailer Hitch Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance with Dynamic Gridlines, a Digital Rearview Mirror with Tow Mode, an Integrated Trailer Health Monitor, and power telescoping trailer tow mirrors. Confirm which features are included or available on the trim you are considering. The published feature lists do not establish that the two manufacturers’ systems work identically.

Diesel fuel economy: compare like with like
Chevrolet’s 2026 comparison lists manufacturer-presented EPA estimates for the available Duramax diesel of 23 city/28 highway mpg with 2WD and 22/26 with 4×4. The Ram diesel figures shown are 20/25 with 2WD and 19/24 with 4×4. These estimates apply to the listed diesel configurations, not every engine, and they are not a promise of real-world mileage—particularly while towing.

- Start with the trailer: If your loaded trailer is near a truck’s limit, compare ratings for the exact configurations under consideration, not just the advertised maximums.
- Calculate usable payload: A higher maximum payload headline does not settle the question if your chosen engine or equipment changes the truck’s rating. Include passengers, gear, accessories, and tongue weight.
- Match the bed and storage: Compare the cab and bed you will actually buy, plus the storage features that fit your routine.
- Check feature availability: Towing aids and driver assistance vary by trim and equipment; confirm the configuration rather than assuming a listed option is standard.
- Evaluate daily fit in person: Parking, visibility, passenger space, and comfort deserve a hands-on comparison. Manufacturer specifications alone do not establish which truck rides better.
The available manufacturer materials establish ratings and listed features, but not a side-by-side road test, long-term reliability comparison, repair-cost dataset, or owner survey. They therefore do not support a conclusion about which truck is more comfortable, dependable, or less expensive to maintain.
