The Audi hybrid to focus on if you want a rechargeable vehicle in the United States is the Q5 Plug-in Hybrid. Audi’s U.S. information identifies the 2025 Q5 S line 55 TFSI e as a plug-in hybrid with a 17.9-kWh battery, 362 horsepower, 369 lb-ft of torque, and quattro all-wheel drive.
Audi also sells or documents several U.S.-market mild hybrids, including the A8, S8, Q8, SQ8, and RS Q8. These are gasoline vehicles with electrical assistance—not plug-in vehicles and not Audis designed for routine electric-only driving. Several European Audi plug-in hybrids, including the future Q3 e-hybrid, are not yet confirmed for U.S. sale.
First, separate Audi’s two kinds of hybrids
The word “hybrid” covers two very different Audi powertrains. Confusing them can lead to buying the wrong vehicle, especially if your goal is to charge at home or complete short trips using electric propulsion.
| Type | Can you plug it in? | Can it normally drive on electric power alone? | What it is designed to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | Yes | Yes, within its available electric-driving capability and operating conditions | Use a larger battery and electric motor alongside a gasoline engine |
| Mild hybrid (MHEV) | No | No normal full-electric driving | Support stop-start operation, energy recovery, and auxiliary electrical loads in a gasoline powertrain |
A plug-in hybrid has a battery large enough to provide useful electric propulsion and a charging port for an external power source. A mild hybrid retains a conventional gasoline powertrain. Its electrical system can improve the smoothness or efficiency of engine operation, but it is not a substitute for a PHEV or battery-electric vehicle.
#1 Best Overall
- High density negative paste, improves performance and increases battery life
- Enhanced life alloy or Silver Calcium stamped alloy increases cycle life and improves performance
- Calcium lead positive grid, maximizes conductivity and allows for low resistance
- Robust envelope separator with puncture resistant back, allows for increased acid circulation and prevents shorts. Improved acid circulation, helps the battery to remain cool, and extend battery life
- Vent cap design that resists acid leakage
That distinction also explains why a vehicle advertised as “electrified” or “hybrid” may not meet the expectations of a shopper looking for an electric commute.
Current U.S. Audi plug-in hybrid: the Q5 PHEV
2025 Audi Q5 S line 55 TFSI e
The 2025 Audi Q5 S line 55 TFSI e is the clearest current U.S.-market Audi plug-in hybrid documented in the available American lineup information. Audi of America lists it within the Q5 family with the following specifications:
- Powertrain: 2.0-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid
- Battery: 17.9 kWh
- System output: 362 horsepower
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- Drivetrain: quattro all-wheel drive
- Transmission: S tronic
- 2025 MSRP: $58,500 to $66,700 depending on trim, before destination charges
The Q5 PHEV is therefore the most relevant Audi for an American buyer who wants one vehicle to combine rechargeable electric driving with the long-distance flexibility of a gasoline engine. Its electric-driving range, charge time, and real-world fuel economy should be checked for the specific model year and vehicle configuration rather than inferred from the battery size alone.
Is the Q5 PHEV actually available in the United States?
Audi’s U.S. inventory interface includes a dedicated Q5 PHEV model filter and a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) fuel-type filter. That supports treating the Q5 PHEV as a real American shopping and ownership option, rather than merely a European model that appears in global brochures.
Availability is still not uniform. Dealer stock, regional allocation, model-year changeovers, and vehicle configuration can differ by ZIP code. Audi’s inventory information also warns that availability can change and that displayed vehicles may include equipment unavailable on the U.S. version. Check the window sticker, VIN, and dealer’s written equipment list before assuming that a vehicle has the PHEV powertrain or a particular feature.
Do not confuse the 2025 Q5 PHEV with the 2026 gasoline Q5
Audi’s U.S. overview for the newer 2026 Q5 and Q5 Sportback describes a 268-horsepower lineup. The same overview uses broader family language referring to “plug-in electric hybrid or classic gasoline” vehicles, but that wording does not prove that every 2026 U.S. Q5 configuration is a plug-in hybrid.
In practical terms, a buyer should not assume that a 2026 Q5 is a PHEV simply because the Q5 family has included one. Verify the exact trim, model year, VIN, charging port, battery information, and official vehicle specification. A gasoline Q5 and a Q5 PHEV can look similar while having materially different charging, cargo-floor, maintenance, and operating characteristics.

- With a 70AH capacity and 710 cold cranking amps (CCA). Provides reliable performance and long service life, Up to 2 times the cycle life of conventional batteries. If your car's original battery is an AGM type, you must continue using an AGM battery, as your car will not accept a "downgrade" to a flooded battery. Nominal Voltage:12V. Charging Voltage:14.4~15.0V. Acceptable Charging Current:0~21A. Operating Temperature Range: -22°F~158°F.
- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components, this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
Current and documented U.S. Audi mild hybrids
Audi’s U.S. model pages identify the following 2027 vehicles as mild hybrids. These entries should be understood as U.S.-market model-page documentation; actual ordering and dealer availability can vary by model year and location.

| Model | Engine and hybrid system | Published output | What it means for the buyer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 Audi A8 | 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with mild-hybrid system | 335 hp and 369 lb-ft | Luxury gasoline sedan with mild-hybrid assistance; it does not plug in |
| 2027 Audi S8 | 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with mild-hybrid system | 563 hp and 590 lb-ft | High-performance gasoline sedan, not a PHEV |
| 2027 Audi Q8 | 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with mild-hybrid system | Approximately 335 hp and 369 lb-ft | Gasoline luxury SUV with electrical assistance |
| 2027 Audi SQ8 | 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with mild-hybrid system | 500 hp and 568 lb-ft | Performance SUV with a mild-hybrid gasoline powertrain |
| 2027 Audi RS Q8 | 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with mild-hybrid system | Approximately 590 hp and more than 590 lb-ft | High-performance gasoline SUV; mild hybrid does not mean electric-only operation |
These vehicles can use hybrid-system functions such as engine stop-start and energy recovery, but owners do not connect them to a household outlet. If you want to charge a vehicle at home or drive routine trips using electric propulsion, these MHEVs are the wrong category.
Earlier Audi MHEV applications
Audi Genuine Parts catalogs also identify earlier U.S.-market A6, Q7, SQ7, and related configurations as MILD HYBRID EV-GAS (MHEV). That is useful evidence that mild-hybrid versions of those vehicle families have existed in America.
Parts-catalog evidence is not the same as a current sales listing, however. It should not be used by itself to claim that every A6, Q7, or SQ7 mild-hybrid configuration remains newly orderable in the 2026 U.S. market. For a new purchase, rely on the current Audi USA model page, dealer ordering system, vehicle identification number, and window sticker.
Future and global Audi plug-in hybrids
Audi’s global product strategy combines battery-electric vehicles, combustion vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. Audi has announced new plug-in hybrids in Europe, including the A3, A5, A6, Q3, and Q5, and has indicated that it intends to continue expanding this approach.
That global strategy is important context, but it is not a U.S. product announcement. European availability, pricing, emissions certification, charging specifications, safety certification, warranty coverage, and dealer support do not automatically transfer to the United States.
2027 Audi Q3 e-hybrid
The 2027 Audi Q3 e-hybrid is confirmed as a global or European plug-in-hybrid model. Audi’s announcement states that order books opened on July 2, 2026, production was scheduled to begin in early September 2026, and the Q3 e-hybrid received a 2,000-kg towing rating. The announcement provides euro pricing and WLTP-related context rather than U.S. pricing or American certification.

- Tested Tough & Certified Safe: Mighty Max batteries are built in an ISO-certified facility and meet CE standards for quality, safety, and reliability
For American readers, the accurate description is therefore future/global Audi plug-in hybrid—not a confirmed U.S. Audi. Until Audi of America announces U.S. pricing, certification, ordering, or availability, there is no sound basis for telling shoppers that the Q3 e-hybrid will arrive at American dealers.
The same caution applies to European A3, A5, A6, and other TFSI e models. Audi may sell them elsewhere, but their presence in the global portfolio does not establish U.S. availability or import eligibility.

Audi has also announced the high-performance Nuvolari as its first supercar with a hybrid powertrain. The announcement establishes the hybrid technology direction, but not a normal U.S. retail launch, production volume, price, or American dealer availability.
Nuvolari is best treated as a technology and product-development signal rather than a confirmed consumer model for the United States. It should not be included in a list of Audi hybrids that an American buyer can currently order.
What is not an Audi hybrid?
Audi’s e-tron models are battery-electric vehicles, not hybrids. The following belong in an electric-vehicle comparison, but they should not be counted as gasoline-electric hybrid Audis:
- Q4 e-tron
- Q6 e-tron
- A6 Sportback e-tron
These vehicles are all-electric and use charging infrastructure differently from the Q5 PHEV. A PHEV carries both a gasoline engine and an electric system; a battery-electric e-tron does not use a gasoline engine as a backup.

What ownership of the Q5 PHEV involves
Charging and electrical planning
The Q5 PHEV can be charged from an external power source, unlike an Audi MHEV. Before buying replacement or supplemental charging equipment, verify the vehicle’s model year, connector, supported amperage, included cable, circuit capacity, and charging instructions in the owner’s manual.

- ✅ Not for Deep Cycle Applications: Please note that this is a starting battery and is not designed for deep-cycle applications such as solar or marine use. It is ideal for vehicles with higher electrical accessory loads or those that need a high CCA starting battery with enhanced cyclic performance. Verify that the battery type and specifications match your vehicle's requirements.
A search for a J1772 charger for Audi Q5 PHEV can be a useful starting point for comparing compatible Level 1 or Level 2 equipment, but compatibility should never be assumed from a product title alone. Level 2 installation may require a properly rated circuit and, depending on the home’s existing electrical service, evaluation or installation by a qualified electrician. Do not select equipment solely by maximum amperage if the vehicle, wiring, receptacle, or circuit cannot support it.
The available specifications establish that the Q5 PHEV is rechargeable; they do not establish one universal charge time or electric range for every model year and configuration. Use the official manual and the vehicle’s specification sheet for those figures.
Floor mats and cargo protection
PHEV packaging can change the floor shape, rear cargo-floor height, or available storage compared with a gasoline Q5. That is why a gasoline-Q5 accessory should not automatically be assumed to fit the PHEV.

Audi lists genuine Q5 all-weather mats, while WeatherTech and Smartliner document Q5 PHEV-specific liner applications. Fitment still needs to be checked before ordering.
A custom-fit Q5 PHEV cargo liner is similarly useful for protecting the cargo area, but the cargo-floor design may differ from gasoline Q5 versions. Confirm the vehicle generation and whether the liner is intended for the standard Q5 or Q5 Sportback.
Owners seeking an OEM route can also compare Audi Q5 PHEV accessories and model-specific parts through Audi or an authorized dealer. Audi Genuine Parts listings include Q5 PHEV-specific applications such as charging-port hardware, but fitment depends on model year and configuration. Official dealer purchase and third-party affiliate availability are separate matters.
Diagnostics and high-voltage safety
An Audi-compatible diagnostic scan tool may help an owner investigate ordinary warning lights or read certain vehicle-control-module faults, particularly on a mild-hybrid vehicle. Exact Audi and Volkswagen Group compatibility varies considerably between generic OBD-II devices and advanced VAG diagnostic systems.

High-voltage diagnosis, isolation faults, battery disassembly, cell work, and related repairs require appropriate training, protective equipment, and vehicle-specific procedures. High-voltage battery repair kits, unverified battery balancers, and generic “Audi hybrid battery replacement” products are poor recommendations because voltage, compatibility, safety, and professional-service requirements are material.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify an Audi hybrid before purchase
- Identify the powertrain type. Ask whether the vehicle is a PHEV, MHEV, gasoline model, or battery-electric e-tron. Do not rely on the general word “hybrid.”
- Confirm the model year and trim. The 2025 Q5 S line 55 TFSI e is not interchangeable with every newer Q5 configuration.
- Look for the charging hardware. A true PHEV should have the appropriate charging port and documentation. An MHEV does not plug in.
- Check the VIN and window sticker. Verify the engine, battery, drivetrain, equipment, and destination price for the specific vehicle.
- Check local inventory. Search Audi’s U.S. inventory by location and use the Q5 PHEV or PHEV fuel-type filters where available.
- Confirm warranty and service support. Ask the dealer who handles high-voltage-system diagnosis and whether the advertised vehicle is a U.S.-specification model.
- Check accessory fitment separately. Floor liners, cargo trays, charging cables, and replacement parts can vary by generation, body style, and PHEV packaging.
Bottom line for U.S. shoppers
Audi’s American hybrid lineup is narrower than its global hybrid portfolio. The Q5 PHEV is the principal U.S. Audi to consider when you want a gasoline-electric vehicle that can be plugged in. The A8, S8, Q8, SQ8, and RS Q8 are mild hybrids: they offer gasoline power with electrical assistance, but not routine plug-in charging or normal electric-only driving.
European models such as the Q3 e-hybrid, A3 TFSI e, A5 TFSI e, and A6 TFSI e show where Audi’s global strategy is heading, but they should not be treated as confirmed U.S. products without an Audi of America announcement. And e-tron models are fully electric, not hybrids.
