One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor the 2026 U.S.-market Nissan Altima, the SV is the value-oriented choice and the SR is the appearance-and-equipment choice. The SR does not add engine power or better published fuel economy; its premium buys sport-tuned suspension, larger wheels and tires, sport-cloth trim, paddle shifters and related styling.
Choose SV when keeping the purchase price lower matters more than those features. Choose SR when you specifically want the sport hardware and cabin details and are comfortable paying more. Compare the exact window sticker before signing because screens, driver-assistance upgrades and comfort equipment can depend on packages.

What the two trims share mechanically
Identical 2.5-liter engine output
Nissan lists a 2.5-liter four-cylinder for both the SV and SR, producing 188 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. The SR name does not indicate a higher-output engine in this model year. If acceleration is your deciding factor, there is no published power advantage to justify choosing SR.
Same published FWD fuel economy
For front-wheel-drive versions, Nissan lists 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined for both trims. These are manufacturer-published EPA estimates, not independent test results; weather, speed, cargo, tire pressure and driving style can change real-world consumption. The numbers also apply specifically to the FWD comparison, so check the sticker if a dealer is quoting a different drivetrain.
Shared suspension architecture
Both cars use independent front-strut and rear multi-link suspension. The SR receives a sport tune, but no independent road test or measured ride comparison is available here. Drive each car over the roads you actually use rather than assuming the word “sport” tells you whether the ride or steering will suit you.

Sport-tuned suspension
The SR’s sport-tuned suspension is its main functional distinction. Nissan does not publish a separate horsepower figure, braking figure or track test for the SR in the cited specifications. Treat the upgrade as a chassis-setting and equipment choice, then verify that you like the ride and handling during a back-to-back drive.
19-inch wheels and lower-profile tires
SR uses machine-finished 19-inch SR alloy wheels with P235/40VR19 all-season tires; SV uses 17-inch wheels with P215/55VR17 all-season tires. The larger SR tire has a shorter sidewall by specification, which changes the wheel-and-tire proportion and can make replacement pricing, wheel protection and ride comfort more important to your decision. Nissan does not provide a tire-replacement cost comparison, so ask a dealer or tire shop for a quote before buying and inspect the exact tire brand on the window sticker.
Sport appearance and cabin touch points
The comparison lists sport cloth seats, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel and paddle shifters for SR. Those features are present even though the engine output is unchanged. They matter most to buyers who interact with the car every day and want a sportier visual and tactile treatment, not to buyers seeking a faster powertrain.

Price, destination and the real purchase budget
Nissan lists a $27,580 starting MSRP for the 2026 Altima SV FWD and $28,980 for the SR FWD. The displayed destination charge is $1,245 for each trim. Adding that charge produces calculated pre-tax figures of $28,825 for SV and $30,225 for SR; the $1,400 gap remains unchanged. These calculations are not quotes for registration, sales tax, dealer documentation, accessories, financing, incentives or negotiation.
| Published or calculated item | SV FWD | SR FWD |
|---|---|---|
| Starting MSRP | $27,580 | $28,980 |
| Displayed destination charge | $1,245 | $1,245 |
| MSRP plus displayed destination (calculated) | $28,825 | $30,225 |
| SR premium before other costs | $1,400 | |
Use the MSRP as a comparison anchor, not as an expected transaction price. Dealer-installed accessories and market adjustments can affect the final amount, while manufacturer incentives can change over time. Request an itemized out-the-door worksheet for the exact VIN and confirm that destination has not been added twice.
What the $1,400 premium does and does not buy
The price gap is easy to misunderstand because the SR badge can suggest a performance upgrade. In this comparison, the premium buys the sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels and tires, sport-cloth interior treatment, paddle shifters, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel and SR styling details. It does not buy a different listed engine, additional horsepower, additional torque or a better Nissan-published FWD mpg rating.
That distinction helps when comparing dealer quotes. If an SV has expensive packages or accessories and an SR is discounted, the actual gap may be smaller than $1,400. Conversely, an SR with a Premium Package, dealer accessories or a market adjustment can cost substantially more. Compare line items rather than assuming the trim names tell you the final value.
Plan for wheel-and-tire ownership
The SV’s 17-inch P215/55VR17 tires have a taller sidewall than the SR’s P235/40VR19 tires. Nissan does not publish replacement prices, tread-life claims or a ride-comfort score for either setup. Before choosing SR, obtain a local quote for replacing one tire and a full set, ask whether the exact original-equipment tire is in stock, and check the price of a replacement wheel. This is especially useful if your roads have potholes or you regularly drive where winter damage is common.

Cabin screens, seats and package-dependent equipment
Nissan’s displayed comparison identifies cloth seat material and an 8-inch NissanConnect touchscreen for SV. For SR, it shows sport cloth, the leatherette-wrapped wheel, paddle shifters and a 12.3-inch display in the current specifications view. Because Nissan’s online pages can present equipment by package and configuration, use those descriptions as a starting point rather than assuming every car carrying an SV or SR badge has the same screen or comfort features.

How to verify the car you are actually buying
- Open the vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet and locate the model year, trim and drivetrain.
- Match the listed screen size, seat material, audio system and comfort features to the physical car.
- Look for package names and option codes; do not infer premium equipment from a salesperson’s trim shorthand.
- Photograph the sticker and have the sales contract reproduce the agreed equipment and accessories.
This check is particularly important when comparing dealer inventory that includes an SV Special Edition or SR Midnight Edition, which are separate configurations rather than interchangeable names for the standard trims.
Safety Shield 360 and optional driver assistance
Standard safety equipment shown for both trims
Nissan lists Safety Shield 360 across Altima trims. The comparison includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert with rear automatic braking, blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning and driver-attention monitoring. Confirm the equipment label on the particular vehicle, especially if inventory has been altered or grouped into a dealer package.
ProPILOT Assist is not automatically included
Nissan describes available ProPILOT Assist as helping the driver stay centered in the lane, maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead, stop in traffic and resume when traffic moves. Nissan presents it as available equipment, and the trim comparison places some premium driver-assistance content in Premium Package configurations. Therefore, do not advertise ProPILOT Assist as standard on every SV or SR. Verify its presence in the sticker, menu and equipment list.
Around View Monitor is also configuration dependent
Nissan describes the available Intelligent Around View Monitor as a four-camera system that creates a virtual composite 360-degree view around and above the vehicle. It is not established as standard on every SV or SR. Ask the dealer to demonstrate the camera view on the exact car and confirm the feature in the option list.
Do not confuse safety availability with trim identity
A dealer may describe a car as a “loaded SV” or “fully equipped SR,” but those phrases are not substitutes for an option list. A Premium Package can change the technology content without changing the badge. If adaptive driving assistance or a surround-view camera is important to you, make that feature a purchase requirement and reject any vehicle whose sticker does not name it.
SV Special Edition and SR Midnight Edition: avoid the naming trap
Nissan’s trim page separately shows an SV Special Edition and an SR Midnight Edition. The SR Midnight Edition is described as adding a rear spoiler and gloss-black 19-inch wheels to the SR. Those additions do not turn the car into a different engine or a higher-output model. Ask which edition, drivetrain and package are included in any written quote; a quote that says only “Altima SR” is incomplete if appearance packages are involved.

Confirm the exact model year, drivetrain, wheels, screen, seating material and package codes on the vehicle being offered.
Which trim fits your priorities?
Choose the SV when value and straightforward equipment come first
- You want the lower starting MSRP and do not need the SR’s sport-tuned suspension.
- The 17-inch wheels and P215/55VR17 tires suit your appearance and tire-budget priorities.
- Cloth seats and the displayed 8-inch screen meet your needs, or you find an SV with the package content you want.
- You care about the same listed engine output and FWD mpg as SR without paying for sport styling.
Choose the SR when you will use its hardware every day
- You specifically prefer the sport-tuned suspension after driving it on familiar roads.
- The 19-inch SR wheels, lower-profile tires and sport appearance are worth the additional cost to you.
- Sport cloth, paddle shifters, the leatherette-wrapped steering wheel or the displayed 12.3-inch screen are meaningful upgrades.
- You have confirmed that the exact SR includes any Premium Package driver-assistance or comfort features you expect.
Use this decision table before negotiating
| Your priority | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest published price | SV | Its starting MSRP is $1,400 below SR before other costs. |
| More horsepower | Neither | Nissan lists 188 hp and 180 lb-ft for both. |
| Better published FWD mpg | Neither | Both are listed at 26/36/30 mpg. |
| Sport suspension and larger wheels | SR | Those are the SR’s defining mechanical and visual upgrades. |
| Smaller wheels and a conventional tire size | SV | It uses 17-inch wheels and P215/55VR17 tires. |
| Specific advanced driver assistance | Whichever exact car has the package | ProPILOT Assist and Around View Monitor are available, not universal. |
A practical buying process
- Set the trim question first. Decide whether you are paying for SR equipment or merely hoping it is faster. The published engine and FWD economy are the same.
- Compare equivalent drivetrains. Put FWD against FWD when using Nissan’s prices and mpg figures. If the quote shows another drivetrain, request its own sticker and official figures.
- Inspect wheel and tire details. Confirm 17-inch SV or 19-inch SR wheels, tire dimensions, tire brand and remaining tread on used or demo inventory.
- Audit packages. Verify screen size, audio, comfort equipment, ProPILOT Assist and the Intelligent Around View Monitor by VIN or window sticker.
- Drive both trims back to back. Use the same route, including rough pavement and highway merging, because no independent ride or handling measurements establish which tune will suit you.
- Request the out-the-door total. Keep MSRP, the $1,245 displayed destination charge, taxes, registration, dealer fees, accessories and incentives on separate lines.
- Review the signed equipment list. Ensure the contract names the edition, drivetrain, packages, wheel setup and every dealer-installed item.
Questions to ask during the test drive
- Is this the exact drivetrain used in the written quote?
- Can I see the window sticker before discussing payment?
- Which features are factory-installed and which were added by the dealer?
- Does this car have ProPILOT Assist and the Intelligent Around View Monitor, and can you demonstrate them?
- What tire brand and size are fitted, and what would a replacement set cost locally?
- Is the quoted destination charge already included in the advertised price?
Ask these questions on both vehicles and record the answers. A side-by-side worksheet prevents a highly optioned SV from being compared with a base SR, or an SR Midnight Edition from being mistaken for the standard SR.
Useful Nissan accessories for either trim
If you need seasonal cargo protection, Nissan lists “All-Season Floor Mats — High Wall Liners (4-piece set)” at a $200 MSRP and says they help protect carpet from dirt and debris. Confirm 2026 Altima fitment and the part number for your trim before paying; the listing does not establish marketplace sellers or third-party availability.
Nissan also lists a “Removable Tote Cargo Organizer” at $163. Its collapsible trunk dividers can be stored when not needed. These accessories are independent of the SV-versus-SR performance decision, so include them only after comparing the vehicles and the out-the-door totals. Nissan’s Altima features page and official parts catalog provide the applicable accessory and fitment information.
Final recommendation
Buy the 2026 Altima SV if you want the rational value: it costs less, uses the same listed 2.5-liter output and receives the same published FWD fuel-economy estimates. Buy the SR only when its sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheel-and-tire package, sport-cloth interior, paddle shifters and styling are worth the $1,400 starting-price premium to you. In either case, make the final decision from the exact window sticker and an actual test drive, not the trim badge alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2026 Nissan Altima SR faster than the SV?
No. Nissan lists the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 188 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque for both trims. The SR adds sport-oriented suspension and equipment, not a higher-output engine.

Is the Altima SR worth the extra $1,400?
It can be if you specifically want the sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch wheels, sport cloth, paddle shifters, leatherette-wrapped steering wheel and SR styling. If those details do not matter, the SV keeps the same listed power and FWD fuel-economy estimates for less money.
Which gets better gas mileage, Altima SV or SR?
Neither in Nissan’s FWD comparison. Both are listed at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway and 30 mpg combined. Confirm the figures for any different drivetrain on the vehicle’s window sticker.
What is the difference between Altima SV and SR wheels?
The SV uses 17-inch machine-finished alloy wheels with P215/55VR17 all-season tires. The SR uses 19-inch machine-finished SR alloy wheels with P235/40VR19 all-season tires. The SR setup has a shorter sidewall and may warrant extra attention to tire and wheel replacement prices.

Nissan lists $27,580 for the SV FWD and $28,980 for the SR FWD. The displayed destination charge is $1,245 for each, producing calculated MSRP-plus-destination figures of $28,825 and $30,225. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, accessories and incentives are additional.

Nissan lists four-piece high-wall all-season floor mats at a $200 MSRP and a Removable Tote Cargo Organizer at $163. Confirm 2026 fitment and the part number before purchase.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The SV is the smarter value if you want the lower price and the same listed engine and FWD mpg. Pay for the SR only if its sport suspension, 19-inch wheels, cabin details and styling are priorities you will use every day.
