Mercedes calls it a “Grand Limousine” that combines limousine-like driving behavior with MPV versatility. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a natural comparison because it is an electric minivan with styling inspired by the historic Type 2/Microbus, but available information does not establish that Mercedes copied its design or support a detailed head-to-head comparison.
Is the 2026 Mercedes van really called the V-Class?
Mercedes-Benz’s current name for its new passenger-focused electric van is VLE. The company said in July 2025 that the model would reach the market in 2026, with seating for up to eight. The name also reflects a distinction in Mercedes-Benz’s van strategy: privately positioned vehicles such as the VLE and planned VLS are separate from commercial transporters. The VLE is the passenger-oriented model; the VLS is the planned top-end private model, not another name for the VLE.
What is the VLE, and is it electric?
The VLE is an electric MPV intended to span everyday private transport and more premium passenger service. Mercedes-Benz describes it as a “Grand Limousine,” with family and leisure use as well as VIP shuttle roles. That makes it more useful to think of the VLE as a luxury-leaning passenger van than as a commercial transporter with seats added.

The underlying VAN.EA roadmap was announced in 2023. Mercedes-Benz said newly developed midsize and large vans would move to that modular architecture from 2026 and would be electric-only. That is the company’s stated product plan, rather than an independent market finding. The later VLE launch material confirms the model’s electric positioning. Does “ID. Buzz in its sights” mean a direct rival?
The phrase works as a comparison hook for two electric passenger vans, not as proof of a direct design-copy claim. Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz is an electric minivan whose styling references the historic Type 2/Microbus. The available information does not establish that Mercedes designed the VLE to copy the ID. Buzz, nor does it provide the aligned specifications needed for a fair comparison. A useful buyer’s comparison would require the same market and model-year basis for seating layouts, dimensions and cargo space, range and energy use on the same test cycle, charging, drivetrain, price and availability. Without those matched figures, calling the VLE a direct technical equivalent would go beyond what is established.
What seating and equipment are confirmed?
Mercedes-Benz’s July 2026 update for Germany described VLE configurations spanning five to eight seats. It specifically added an eight-seat configuration for the VLE 300, alongside AMG Line and AMG Line Plus and premium electric comfort seats. When can buyers order the VLE, and what does it cost?
Mercedes-Benz opened VLE orders in Germany in April 2026. In its July 2026 German update, the company listed a starting price for the VLE 300 of €77,895.97 including VAT, or €65,458.80 excluding VAT. Those are Germany-specific prices reported in that update; prices and configurations can vary by country and change over time. The available information establishes German ordering, not an order date or price for other markets.

What should buyers take from the name and comparison?
