2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Review: Range, Charging and Trim Choice

The 2026 electric CLA offers up to 374 EPA miles or 349-hp all-wheel-drive performance. Here is what the 800V charging caveat, 400V converter and two launch trims mean for buyers.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is most compelling in two very different forms: the rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ prioritizes an EPA-rated range of up to 374 miles, while the all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4MATIC delivers 349 horsepower and an estimated 0–60 mph time of 4.8 seconds. Both use an 85-kWh usable battery and claim up to 320-kW DC charging, but early U.S. cars require an 800-volt fast charger unless they have the factory 400V converter. That hardware detail should be checked on the exact vehicle before purchase.

Verdict at a glance

The electric CLA has a strong long-distance specification and a more focused launch lineup than many luxury EVs. The 250+ offers the longest U.S. EPA range, while the 350 4MATIC gives up 62 miles of rated range for substantially stronger acceleration and all-wheel-drive traction. Mercedes-Benz quotes a 10–80% DC charging time of 22 minutes, but that figure assumes suitable equipment and conditions; it is not a promise that every public charging stop will reach 320 kW.

What the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is

The 2026 model is the first electric CLA sedan in the U.S. launch lineup. Mercedes-Benz USA lists two versions: the rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and the all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology. Both use lithium-ion nickel-manganese-cobalt cells, an 85-kWh usable battery and a claimed 130-mph top speed.

The naming can be confusing because the numeric designation does not correspond directly to horsepower. The 250+ makes 268 hp and 247 lb-ft, whereas the 350 4MATIC makes 349 hp and 380 lb-ft. The “+” version is the efficiency and range choice; the 350 adds a second driven axle and a much more powerful output.

Mercedes-Benz Germany’s technical table lists additional electric CLA variants, including CLA 200 and CLA 250 models, but those are German-market offerings. They should not be treated as U.S. trims or assumed to be available through American dealers.

U.S. trim specifications

Specification CLA 250+ with EQ Technology CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology
Drive Rear-wheel drive All-wheel drive
Output 268 hp 349 hp

Top speed 130 mph 130 mph
EPA fuel economy Up to 127 city/124 highway/126 combined MPGe 120 city/115 highway/118 combined MPGe

These figures come from Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2026 quick-reference specifications. The acceleration numbers are identified as estimates, and the range and MPGe values are trim-specific U.S. EPA figures. Actual results vary with temperature, speed, traffic, wheel and tire configuration, climate control and payload.

CLA 250+: the range-focused version

The CLA 250+ is the logical choice for drivers who value fewer charging stops. Its 374-mile maximum EPA rating is the headline number in the lineup, and rear-wheel drive reduces the hardware and energy demands associated with powering two axles. The estimated 6.6-second 0–60 mph time is quick enough for normal highway merging, although it is not intended to match the 350’s launch performance.

CLA 350 4MATIC: the performance and traction version

The CLA 350 4MATIC trades range for output and all-wheel-drive traction. Its 349 hp and 380 lb-ft represent an 81-hp and 133-lb-ft increase over the 250+. Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The 312-mile EPA rating remains substantial, but buyers should expect more frequent charging on long trips than in the 250+.

Range: keep EPA and WLTP separate

For the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz lists up to 374 miles of EPA range for the CLA 250+ and 312 miles for the CLA 350 4MATIC. “Up to” matters: the maximum can depend on the specific configuration, and EPA testing is a standardized estimate rather than a guarantee for an individual commute.

Mercedes-Benz Germany publishes a different set of figures under the European WLTP test. Its table lists 673–792 km for the German-market CLA 250+ and 648–770 km for the German-market CLA 350 4MATIC. Those ranges equal approximately 418–492 miles and 403–479 miles when converted mathematically, but they are not U.S. EPA ratings and should not be used to predict American-market results. WLTP generally produces higher range numbers than EPA because the procedures and conditions differ.

Market and test cycle CLA 250+ CLA 350 4MATIC
United States EPA Up to 374 miles 312 miles
Germany WLTP 673–792 km 648–770 km
German combined energy consumption 12.3–14.6 kWh/100 km 12.7–15.2 kWh/100 km

No independent standardized U.S. range test was verified for this review. Treat the EPA values as the appropriate comparison for American shopping and use your own speed, climate and route patterns to estimate a practical buffer.

Charging is the most important ownership caveat

800V fast charging is not the same as universal fast-charger compatibility

The early U.S. CLA Electric uses an 800-volt charging architecture. Mercedes-Benz says a vehicle without the factory 400V converter requires an 800V DC fast charger. The company’s U.S. product information described converter-equipped vehicles as arriving starting in spring 2026, so equipment can vary by production timing and inventory.

Tom’s Guide reported that early vehicles could not be retrofitted with the converter. That makes a pre-purchase equipment check essential: do not assume that every 2026 CLA can use every 400V public DC station simply because the car has a fast-charging inlet. Ask the dealer to identify whether the specific vehicle has the factory converter and obtain the answer in writing on the build sheet or vehicle documentation.

NACS and J1772 ports

The U.S. car has a NACS inlet for DC fast charging and a separate J1772 port for AC charging. Mercedes-Benz describes an included adapter for access to compatible CCS fast-charging equipment. The two-port arrangement means the connector used for public DC charging is not the same as the connector used for Level 2 AC charging.

Tom’s Guide noted that the separate J1772 AC port may require an adapter at certain destination chargers designed around a different AC connector. Treat that as a vehicle-and-adapter fitment question, not as proof that any generic adapter will work. Confirm the adapter’s direction, current rating and model-year compatibility before relying on it for overnight charging.

What the 320-kW and 22-minute claims mean

Mercedes-Benz quotes up to 320 kW of DC input and 22 minutes for a 10–80% charge. Both figures are manufacturer specifications. Reaching the peak rate requires a compatible high-power charger, a battery at an appropriate temperature and a state of charge within the car’s fastest charging window. Charger power can be shared with another vehicle, and the car will taper power as the battery fills, so a real stop may take longer.

The 10–80% window is also the useful road-trip comparison, not a complete refill. Charging from 80% to 100% is normally slower, and drivers who begin with more than 10% or need a larger safety margin will spend a different amount of time connected.

Home charging

Mercedes-Benz describes home charging with its Wallbox and lists 9.6 kW AC charging for both U.S. trims. A compatible Level 2 installation can replenish the car while it is parked overnight, but the vehicle specification alone does not establish the electrical work, permitting, panel capacity or installation price for a particular home. Have an electrician verify the available circuit and local requirements before ordering equipment.

How to check charging compatibility before buying

  1. Identify the exact car. Use the vehicle identification number, build sheet or window-label equipment list rather than relying on a generic model-year advertisement.
  2. Confirm the 400V converter. Ask whether the factory converter is installed. If it is absent, plan on using compatible 800V DC fast chargers.
  3. Check the connector strategy. Verify how the included CCS adapter works with the car’s NACS DC inlet and which cable is used for J1772 AC charging.
  4. Map your regular routes. Look for compatible 800V stations along work, weekend and highway routes. Do not count a listed station until its connector, voltage and operating status are confirmed.
  5. Plan home charging separately. Have the proposed Wallbox or other compatible Level 2 equipment checked against your home’s electrical capacity.
  6. Get delivery timing in writing. Converter availability was described as beginning in spring 2026, so ask whether the car on the lot has the hardware rather than assuming a later-build specification.

Driving impressions and performance

The independent driving evidence available for the U.S. car is limited to a short first drive. Tom’s Guide drove a rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ for a few hours and praised its chassis tuning, ride quality, handling and technology. Those are qualitative impressions, not measurements from a long-term test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 250+’s estimated 6.6-second acceleration should suit most drivers, and its rear-drive layout may feel more balanced to buyers who prefer a lighter, efficiency-oriented sedan. The 350’s estimated 4.8-second sprint and extra torque make it the obvious choice for drivers who regularly merge into fast traffic, drive in snow or simply want stronger throttle response. Because both times are estimates, they should not be treated as independently verified instrument-test results.

No comprehensive durability, braking, winter-range or highway-noise test was verified. A short first drive cannot establish how the ride behaves over thousands of miles, how the battery performs in freezing weather or whether the charging curve remains consistent at different stations.

Efficiency, speed and the technical package

The U.S. quick-reference guide lists up to 126 combined MPGe for the 250+ and 118 combined MPGe for the 350 4MATIC. The city/highway splits are 127/124 MPGe for the 250+ and 120/115 MPGe for the 350. These are EPA efficiency figures, not a promise of a fixed electricity cost because electricity prices, charging losses and driving conditions differ.

Both trims are listed with a 130-mph top speed and the same usable battery capacity. The lower 350 range therefore reflects its all-wheel-drive system and higher-performance calibration rather than a smaller battery. Mercedes-Benz’s environmental information also discusses a heat pump and regenerative braking as elements of the car’s efficiency strategy; the material does not provide a separate U.S. winter-range result for either trim.

Technology and comfort: promising, but not fully tested

Tom’s Guide specifically praised the CLA 250+’s technology during its brief drive, along with the chassis and ride. That supports an expectation of a polished, technology-forward luxury sedan, but it does not substitute for a full evaluation of screen usability, voice control, seat comfort, rear-seat space, cargo capacity or software reliability over time.

Before signing a purchase order, spend enough time in the actual vehicle to test the driving position, rear-seat headroom, child-seat access, trunk opening and the charging screens you will use. Confirm which equipment is standard and which belongs to option packages; the available material does not establish a complete U.S. option-price list.

Price, launch timing and availability

Mercedes-Benz USA announced a $47,250 starting price for the 2026 electric CLA in a release dated November 25, 2025. The announcement described U.S. press launch in December 2025 and a production and vehicle ramp through the first quarter of 2026.

That is an announced starting price, not a current out-the-door quote. The available information does not establish destination charges, option pricing, dealer markups, incentives, taxes, registration fees or the transaction price of a particular car. Inventory and converter availability can change by dealer and production date, so ask for a written buyer’s order and the vehicle’s equipment list.

Fast acceleration CLA 350 4MATIC Estimated 4.8-second 0–60 mph time, 349 hp and 380 lb-ft; range falls to 312 EPA miles
Snowy or low-traction roads CLA 350 4MATIC All-wheel drive adds traction, while tires and driving technique remain important
Lowest announced entry price CLA 250+ It is the lower-output launch trim and the version associated with the $47,250 starting-price announcement
Frequent use of mixed-voltage public charging Only a car with the verified factory converter Early 800V-only cars require compatible 800V DC equipment; converter retrofits were reported as unavailable

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Up to 374 miles of U.S. EPA range in the rear-wheel-drive 250+.
  • A meaningful performance step in the 349-hp, all-wheel-drive 350 4MATIC.
  • Identical 85-kWh usable battery and quoted 320-kW peak DC capability for both launch trims.
  • Mercedes-Benz claims a 22-minute 10–80% DC session under suitable conditions.
  • Early driving impressions praise ride, handling, chassis tuning and technology.
  • Useful efficiency figures, including up to 126 combined MPGe for the 250+.

Limitations and risks

  • Early U.S. cars may require 800V DC fast chargers unless equipped with the factory 400V converter.
  • Tom’s Guide reported that the converter could not be retrofitted to early vehicles.
  • Real-world range, winter performance, charging-curve consistency and long-term reliability remain unverified by the available independent evidence.
  • The $47,250 figure is an announced starting price from November 2025, not a guaranteed current transaction price.
  • German WLTP numbers are not interchangeable with U.S. EPA ratings.
  • Option content, dealer availability and current incentives can vary by vehicle.

Who should buy the 2026 CLA Electric?

The CLA 250+ makes the strongest case for a driver with home charging, long daily distances and a preference for minimizing highway stops. Its range advantage is substantial on paper, and the first-drive account suggests it combines efficiency with composed handling rather than feeling like a stripped-down commuter.

The CLA 350 4MATIC is better suited to buyers who value acceleration, all-weather traction and a more forceful response than maximum range. Its 312-mile EPA rating is still competitive for many commutes, but the trim’s benefits are easiest to justify when the driver will actually use the extra power or all-wheel drive.

Neither trim is an easy recommendation for someone who routinely depends on unknown public chargers. The 800V requirement on unequipped early cars can turn an apparently convenient route into a planning problem. Confirm the converter, map compatible stations and arrange home charging before committing.

Final verdict

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is a promising luxury electric sedan whose buying decision is unusually clear. Choose the CLA 250+ for maximum EPA range and the lower announced entry point; choose the CLA 350 4MATIC for acceleration and all-wheel-drive traction. The decisive question is not only which motor you prefer but whether the exact car has the factory 400V converter you need. With that verified and a dependable home or public charging plan, the CLA’s range, efficiency and reported ride quality make it a credible premium-EV choice. Without that verification, the headline charging numbers can be misleading.
