The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a larger, third-generation redesign with more room for rear passengers and easier cargo access, plus a substantially updated infotainment system. In the U.S., it launches with a 187-hp gasoline engine, standard all-wheel drive and prices starting at $29,990 before destination and other fees. A conventional Mazda hybrid is planned for 2027, not the 2026 U.S. launch.
What changed in the 2026 Mazda CX-5?
Mazda says the third-generation CX-5 is about 4.5 inches longer overall and in wheelbase, and more than half an inch wider than its predecessor. The familiar SUV shape remains, but the proportions and details have been updated, including a wider-looking front end and Mazda lettering across the rear.
The extra length is intended to improve cabin room. Mazda says rear legroom, knee room and headroom have increased, and the rear door openings are larger to make it easier to get in and load items such as child seats.
More usable cargo access
Mazda describes the cargo area as almost two inches longer and more than an inch higher than before. The lift-in height is over half an inch lower, which can make lifting bulky items into the back easier. Those are dimensional comparisons with the previous CX-5; Mazda’s U.S. materials do not provide a single directly comparable cargo-volume figure, so they do not establish a specific increase in cubic feet.

A retractable cargo cover is listed as a 2026 CX-5 accessory, rather than standard equipment. Roof-rail crossbars are also listed for buyers who need rooftop carrying capacity; confirm that the vehicle has the required roof rails and verify fitment for the 2026 model before buying accessories.
What technology does the U.S. CX-5 get?
The center screen varies by trim: the U.S. 2.5 S has a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while the 15.6-inch screen is available on the Premium Plus. Mazda describes the 15.6-inch unit as the largest touchscreen it offers in a vehicle.
Google built-in brings Google Assistant, Google Maps as the main navigation system and access to Google Play. Mazda says the offer is complimentary for one year with the Mazda Connected Services trial. The U.S. model page says Gemini is expected in a future update; it should not be treated as an active feature for every owner. Service terms, availability and timing can change. Safety and driver assistance
Mazda lists blind-spot monitoring, road-keeping assistance, head-on traffic avoidance, vehicle-exit warning and front and rear parking sensors among the U.S. model’s standard safety and driver-assistance features. The pricing announcement also describes standard radar cruise control with speed-limit assist, traffic-sign recognition, and rear cross-traffic and braking functions. Cruising and Traffic Support with Lane Change Assist and an enhanced 360-degree view monitor are available features.

U.S. engine, fuel economy and drivetrain
The 2026 U.S. CX-5 launches with a 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder rated at 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive. Mazda’s Mi-Drive system provides Normal, Sport and Off-Road modes.

Mazda lists EPA estimates of 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined for the U.S. model. These are estimates, and actual mileage varies with driving conditions and vehicle use. Mazda’s U.S. pricing announcement provides the launch powertrain details.

The destination charge is $1,595, or $1,640 in Alaska, according to Mazda’s current U.S. model information. Mazda’s January 2026 pricing release says the updated charge took effect August 11, 2026. Dealer inventory, taxes and other fees affect the final transaction price, so confirm current pricing for the specific vehicle and location.
Is the 2026 CX-5 a hybrid?
Not in the U.S. at launch: Mazda’s U.S. specifications describe the 2026 CX-5 with the gasoline 2.5-liter engine. Mazda has confirmed a conventional hybrid for 2027, but the available information does not establish its U.S. specifications or pricing.
Regional versions should not be conflated. Mazda’s European debut release describes an e-SKYACTIV G 2.5 paired with Mazda M Hybrid and a six-speed automatic. It gives European dimensions of 4,690 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,695 mm high, and notes that performance values vary by market. Those European details do not change the U.S. launch specification. When did the new CX-5 arrive?
Mazda unveiled the all-new CX-5 in Europe in July 2025 and said it would launch in North America and Japan in spring 2026. Mazda’s later U.S. pricing announcement followed in January 2026, and the current U.S. model page lists trims and prices. Mazda Motor Corporation reported that worldwide cumulative CX-5 production and sales each reached five million units by the end of 2025; those are separate production and sales milestones, not a claim that five million of the new generation had been sold.
