The turbo option is gone at launch
The outgoing US CX-5 offered a 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. Car and Driver reports that the 2026 US model launches with a naturally aspirated 187-hp 2.5-liter and standard all-wheel drive. Car and Driver reports that the prior model’s center-console rotary controller is gone and the 2026 center display is operated by touch. Mazda describes the redesigned cabin as minimizing physical buttons and knobs. Mazda lists five US trims. So, is the 2026 CX-5 cheaper?
The evidence supports a narrow answer: Mazda acknowledges structural cost reduction and says it is using cost innovations to fund features it considers valuable. The public statement does not show which components were changed to achieve that, and it does not prove a cabin-material downgrade. At the same time, the US launch model has fewer powertrain choices than the outgoing CX-5 and a different control layout, while gaining claimed space, a large infotainment display, and additional standard safety features.
For a buying decision, compare the same equipment level, test the touchscreen interface in person, and check local offers against the announced MSRP. If the turbo engine is essential, the 2026 US launch specification does not include it; if interior material quality is your concern, inspect the specific trim rather than relying on an unverified generalization.
