Chevrolet’s current U.S. Performance catalog lists LS3 and LSX crate-engine families, so LS-family engines remain listed as products. That does not prove an unchanged engine has been in continuous vehicle production for 30 years—or that reliability is why Chevrolet continues to offer them. Those distinctions matter if you are considering an LS engine swap or crate-engine purchase.
What “still in production” means here
Chevrolet’s U.S. crate-engine catalog is evidence that LS3 and LSX families are currently listed offerings. It is not evidence of local dealer stock, universal vehicle compatibility, or continuous installation in newly built vehicles. The available documentation supports continued catalog availability, not the broader claim that one unchanged LS design has been mass-produced without interruption for three decades.
The LS identification is the best-supported reading of the headline, but the original article page was inaccessible and no official production chronology was established. A secondary 2026 longevity article describes the LS family as nearly 30 years old and notes its pushrod layout; that reporting does not establish an uninterrupted production timeline.
What Chevrolet currently lists
Chevrolet Performance’s current U.S. catalog groups LS3 and LSX products under LS/LSX engines. It also lists LT, small-block, and big-block products, as well as factory-matched engine/transmission packages. Their presence in one catalog does not mean those other families share LS architecture.

Chevrolet describes its crate engines as “Designed, engineered, tested and backed by Chevrolet.” That is the manufacturer’s promotional description, not independent evidence that LS engines are more reliable than alternatives.
Does reliability explain why the LS family remains available?
That causal claim is not established by the available evidence. No named reliability study, comparative failure-rate statistic, or GM statement explaining the commercial reason for continuing LS-family crate-engine listings was identified. The catalog confirms that products are listed; it does not explain why.

- 【Widely used】 LS Billet rear oil passage plug barbell oil diverter is suitable for GM Gen III and IV engines, Vortec truck engines LS1, LS3, LS2, LQ4, L33, LQ9, LS6, L92, L76, L99, LSA, LM4 & LSX Series (4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L, 6.0L, 6.2L)
- 【Quality Material】 Made through precision CNC machining of high-quality aluminum alloy T6061. It has a hard texture, is durable, and has precise dimensions.
- 【Replacement】 Directly replace the easily aging and worn plastic OEM barbell plug on GM LS Gen III and IV engines (suitable for OEM 12573460).
- 【Product advantages】The LS billet rear gallery plug barbell oil diverter uses triple high-temperature resistant FKM fluororubber O-rings. It has good sealing, eliminates dirty oil bypass, improves oil flow, and ensures the long-term smooth and efficient operation of the engine.
- 【Reuse】Aluminum alloy parts can be reused during engine assembly by simply replacing the O-rings. Replacing original plastic parts can enhance durability and overall performance, reducing maintenance costs and the risk of failure.
Without comparable reliability data, it would be misleading to rank LS3 and LSX variants by reliability or call the family “the most reliable.” Continued availability alone cannot demonstrate the reason for a company’s product decisions.

What to check before choosing an LS crate engine
- Exact variant: Compare the specific engine and package, such as an LS3 or an LSX offering, rather than relying on the family name alone.
- Fitment: Confirm compatibility with your vehicle and identify the supporting components required for the installation. A catalog listing does not establish that an engine fits a particular vehicle.
- Intended use and legal status: Check the documentation for the exact product and the rules where the vehicle will be used. Chevrolet’s 2024 Chevelle project account identifies its SP502/605 crate engine as intended exclusively for competition vehicles and warns that public-road use is likely to violate emissions laws. That restriction applies to the specific engine discussed, not automatically to every Chevrolet crate engine.
- Meaning of “available”: A catalog entry is not a stock check. Confirm current availability with a seller, and distinguish a listed crate engine from an engine installed in a newly produced vehicle.
