The Land Cruiser has the advantage in published EPA estimates. Car and Driver lists 23 mpg combined (22 city/25 highway) for the Land Cruiser and 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway) for the GX. More power and a higher maximum tow rating
The GX uses a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 rated by Lexus at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The Land Cruiser’s hybrid 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder system produces 326 net combined horsepower and 465 lb-ft, according to Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser brochure. Car and Driver lists maximum towing of 9,063 pounds for the GX and 6,000 pounds for the Land Cruiser. Lexus specifies up to 9,063 pounds for several GX grades and 9,096 pounds for Overtrail, so verify the exact rating for the grade and configuration you are considering.

A headline tow rating is not the whole towing calculation. Check the specific vehicle’s payload and trailer requirements, as well as the relevant limits for passengers and cargo; the maximum rating does not establish that every loaded setup is within limits.
More seating flexibility in some grades
The Land Cruiser is listed as a five-seater. The GX can offer up to seven seats in some grades, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ give up the third row. If you regularly need a third row, compare the appropriate non-Overtrail GX grade rather than assuming every GX has seven seats.

Every 2026 GX grade has full-time four-wheel drive and a Torsen center differential, according to Lexus. Overtrail and Overtrail+ add a standard one-inch lift, 9.84 inches of minimum running ground clearance, an electronic locking rear differential, and E-KDSS. These features are specific reasons to consider those GX grades, rather than benefits that apply to every GX.
Which is better off-road?
The available specifications do not establish a universal winner on trails. Lexus’s Overtrail equipment is compelling if the GX’s locking rear differential, E-KDSS, and stated clearance fit the terrain and capability you want. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser announcement describes Multi-Terrain Select for Mud, Dirt, and Sand in both 4WD High and 4WD Low. Equipment descriptions alone are not a controlled head-to-head trail test.
