The G20 is therefore a demanding benchmark, not a confirmed winner: the available evidence compares specifications and design, not back-to-back road tests or prices.
First, separate the new 3 Series from the electric BMW i3
BMW’s announcement of 30 September 2026 calls the combustion sedan the eighth-generation 3 Series. The same announcement introduces two fully electric models, while BMW USA presents the electric i3 Sedan as distinct from its combustion-engine 3 Series Sedan. They share design concepts and technology, but the i3 is not simply a battery-powered version of a mechanically identical 3 Series.

The distinction matters when comparing generations: the G20 is the outgoing combustion 3 Series generation, while the new family includes combustion models and the separately named electric i3. BMW says the combustion lineup has three variants at launch, with a plug-in hybrid planned over the following year. Its launch announcement describes two electric models as well. BMW Group’s announcement gives the manufacturer’s current lineup framing.
How the G50 differs from the G20 in size and cabin layout
A larger exterior footprint
BMWBlog’s 29 September 2026 specification comparison reports that the new combustion G50 is 50 mm longer, 24 mm wider and 12 mm taller than the G20, with a wheelbase extended by 10 mm. It also reports wheel options up to 20 inches on the new car, compared with up to 19 inches on the G20. These are secondary-source specifications, not an independent assessment of how the extra dimensions affect passenger room, parking or ride quality. BMWBlog’s G50-versus-G20 comparison provides the reported figures.

A different way to interact with the car
The same comparison reports that a 17.9-inch center display replaces the G20’s dual-screen arrangement. It also describes haptic steering-wheel spokes and seat controls moved to the doors. Those changes make the new cabin’s interface and control layout a substantial departure, but screen size and relocation alone do not establish whether the controls are more intuitive or quicker to use. That requires time in the car.
Combustion choices and official performance figures
BMW’s announced combustion range starts with the 318 at 115 kW (156 hp); the 320 is rated at 155 kW (211 hp). At the performance end, BMW lists the M350 xDrive with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 326 kW (443 hp) and 580 Nm. BMW quotes 0–100 km/h in 4.1 seconds and a limited top speed of 250 km/h for that model. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. The G20 comparison cannot be reduced to one predecessor trim. BMW’s history of the model records the arrival of the 330e plug-in hybrid and M340i xDrive, as well as a 2022 update; across its run, the predecessor range has included petrol, diesel and plug-in-hybrid options alongside performance variants. A fair comparison therefore depends on which G20 and successor versions a buyer is considering. BMW’s account of the model’s history is available at BMW Group’s 3 Series history page.

For the electric i3, BMW Group reports WLTP range of up to 912 km (567 miles) for the i3 50 xDrive and up to 710 km (441 miles) for the i3 40 xDrive. BMW USA, by contrast, lists a preliminary estimated U.S. range of 446–468 miles for the i3 50 xDrive and says recently released model-year ranges may not yet be EPA-certified. WLTP figures and preliminary U.S. estimates are not the same measurement and should not be compared as though they were a single test.

BMW USA also lists DC charging up to 400 kW and says a ten-minute session can add 191–208 miles under its stated maximum-rate assumption. These are manufacturer claims, not independent charging or range-test results. The U.S. page identifies its range as preliminary and gives the market-specific context: BMW USA’s i3 Sedan overview.
Driver assistance claims are market-specific
BMW says the new generation improves SAE Level 2 assistance and describes Motorway Assistant as enabling hands-free driving at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph) in 21 countries. That is BMW’s description of the feature, not a guarantee that it is offered on every car or usable under identical conditions everywhere. Availability and legal requirements depend on the market; check the local vehicle specification and applicable rules.

When the new models are expected to arrive
BMW says orders for the new range open on 30 September 2026 and first deliveries are expected around the turn of 2026/2027. That is the company’s stated schedule, not a universal delivery date for every country or variant. For the electric i3 specifically, BMW USA says U.S. deliveries begin in early 2027. Local launch and delivery timing may differ.
Does the G20 remain the better benchmark?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline’s provocation might suggest. The successor changes the exterior dimensions and cabin controls, and BMW has announced combustion and electric choices with stated performance and range figures. But the available comparison is about specifications and design; it does not establish that the G20 drives better, costs less to buy or own, is more reliable, or will retain more value.

- Number 100/125 in the Overall Series!
- 1:64 Scale Diecast Toy Vehicle
Those judgments require market-specific prices and comparable road tests, ideally between equivalent versions. Until that evidence exists, the G20’s strongest case is as a proven point of comparison against a substantially redesigned successor—not as a demonstrated better buy. BMW says more than 18 million 3 Series vehicles have been sold as of its 2026 announcement, and its 2025 history page describes more than five decades of the model. Those manufacturer-reported milestones help explain the weight of the name, but they do not decide which generation is better for an individual driver.
