Seating: seven places on paper, different experience in practice
Both SUVs advertise capacity for up to seven, but the number of belts is only the beginning. A family with two adults and several children may value a walk-through or fold-and-slide second row, while a family carrying adults in the back needs headroom, knee room, seat-cushion support and an easy entry angle. The available specifications do not establish a universal winner for those measurements.

Check the third row with the people who will use it
- Have the tallest regular passenger sit in the third row with the second row adjusted for a normal child-seat position.
- Check whether feet can rest naturally, whether knees contact the seat ahead, and whether the seat belt crosses the shoulder rather than the neck.
- Open and close the liftgate with all rows occupied. Look for the space required to load a stroller, sports bag or grocery case.
- Try the second-row release from both the passenger side and the third row. A mechanism that works in a showroom may be difficult beside a curb or with a child seat installed.
Install your actual child restraints
Bring the rear-facing, forward-facing and booster seats your family uses. Install them in every intended position, then test the front-seat driving position. Check that the lower anchors are reachable, the seat belt buckles are not hidden under a cushion, and a rear-facing shell does not force the front passenger too far forward. Manufacturer diagrams and a listed number of anchors cannot predict how your particular seat fits.
Think about daily access
Count how often children will climb into the third row. If the answer is several times a day, prioritize a wide opening, a simple second-row release and a path that remains usable with one child seat installed. If the third row is occasional emergency seating, cargo space with all seats raised may matter more than maximum passenger comfort.
Cargo: the third-row-up measurement is the family test
Families often compare the largest cargo number, but that figure describes a vehicle with the second and third rows folded. The harder question is what fits when everyone is traveling.

What Hyundai publishes for the 2026 Santa Fe
Hyundai lists 14.6 cubic feet behind the Santa Fe’s third row, 40.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 79.6 cubic feet behind the front seats. These are Hyundai Motor America figures for the 2026 Santa Fe. Use the 14.6-cubic-foot figure for a realistic full-family packing exercise: measure the stroller, cooler, school bags or sports equipment you actually carry rather than relying on a maximum-volume claim.

What is not established for the 2026 Sorento
The available Kia material does not supply a directly comparable 2026 Sorento cargo table. That prevents a defensible numerical claim that the Santa Fe carries more or less than the Sorento. Ask a dealer for the current specification sheet, then measure both vehicles from the same reference points. A practical cargo test
- Raise every seat, including the third row.
- Load the largest item first and close the liftgate without compressing it dangerously.

Santa Fe Hybrid
Hyundai lists a $36,400 starting MSRP for the 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid. Its stated EPA estimates are 37 city/36 highway/36 combined MPG with FWD and 35 city/34 highway/34 combined MPG with AWD. Actual fuel economy varies with options, traffic, weather, driving style and vehicle condition. The AWD penalty in the published estimates is two MPG in each city, highway and combined category, so choose AWD for a real traction need rather than assuming it is free efficiency.

Sorento gasoline and hybrid information
Kia’s U.S. Sorento page displays 23/31/26 MPG city/highway/combined for a base configuration, while cautioning that mileage varies with conditions and configuration. Confirm that the live page or EPA listing identifies the same 2026 trim and drivetrain before using those numbers in a purchase decision. Kia identifies the 2026 Sorento Hybrid as a 232-hp turbo hybrid, but the available material does not provide an exact-year, matched city/highway/combined MPG table that can be compared directly with the Santa Fe figures.
A Kia page currently titled for 2027 also displays 2027 hybrid estimates and 2026 award language. Do not transfer those 2027 performance or fuel-economy numbers to a 2026 Sorento. Ask for the window sticker and the EPA label on the specific vehicle.
Price: advertised MSRP is not your out-the-door number
The Santa Fe has the lower published gasoline entry price at $35,050, while its hybrid starts at $36,400. Those are manufacturer MSRPs, not guaranteed transaction prices. Freight, taxes, title, registration, dealer-installed accessories, financing and regional market conditions can materially change the total.

- Write down the exact model year, trim, engine, FWD or AWD configuration and exterior and interior options.
- Request the vehicle identification number or a full build sheet for an in-stock vehicle.
- Ask for selling price, destination or freight, documentation fee, accessories, taxes, title, registration and every incentive on separate lines.
- Compare the same payment assumptions separately from the cash out-the-door price; a monthly payment can hide a longer term or a larger down payment.
- Obtain quotes from multiple local dealers on the same specification and ask how long each quote is valid.
Because complete 2026 Sorento trim pricing is not established in the available material, a reliable price winner cannot be declared. A seemingly cheaper vehicle may lose its advantage after destination charges, dealer accessories or a required AWD upgrade.

Safety: useful recognition, limited conclusion
Kia reports a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the Sorento Hybrid and says it applies only to vehicles built after September 2025. Hyundai reports a 2026 Santa Fe Top Safety Pick+ award. Before relying on either statement, verify the exact IIHS award page, vehicle build date, body style, headlights and other configuration conditions.
A Top Safety Pick+ designation is valuable context, but it is not a complete head-to-head verdict. It does not tell you which vehicle has the more intuitive lane-centering behavior, the least intrusive warnings, the best child-seat geometry or the lower repair cost after a crash. Ask for the current IIHS and NHTSA results for the exact vehicle and take a careful test drive in the traffic conditions your family faces.

Mixing model years
The Kia web material currently mixes a 2027 page title with 2026 award language. A 2027 MPG or performance figure is not a 2026 specification. Match the model year printed on the vehicle and EPA label.

Comparing different drivetrains
An FWD hybrid’s EPA rating cannot be used to represent an AWD gasoline model. Keep fuel type and drivetrain identical when comparing efficiency, price and performance.
Using maximum cargo volume as family capacity
The largest number usually requires folding rows. Start with the third-row-up volume and your real luggage, then see how much space remains when only one seat is folded.
Treating an award as a guarantee
Safety recognition depends on the tested configuration and build conditions. Verify applicability and remember that crash results do not measure every driver-assistance behavior or ownership cost.
Choosing from seat count alone
Seven seats can still be a poor fit if the third row is uncomfortable, access is awkward or child seats consume the second row. A 30-minute family fit check is more informative than a seating headline.
