The 2026 Hyundai Sonata is a midsize sedan offered in the U.S. with gasoline and hybrid powertrains. Its lineup ranges from the $27,450 SE to the $38,250 Limited Hybrid, with a high-efficiency Blue Hybrid, an available all-wheel-drive SEL Sport, and a 290-hp N Line serving different priorities. Hyundai’s listed prices are starting MSRPs before freight and other charges; the best fit depends on the equipment, drivetrain, and fuel economy you want.

Is the 2026 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

It can be a strong fit if you want a sedan with several distinct powertrain choices rather than one setup for every buyer. The Blue Hybrid is the efficiency pick, the SEL Sport is the only trim with available all-wheel drive, and the N Line is the performance-oriented version. The regular gas SE offers the lowest starting MSRP in the lineup.

There is no single best Sonata for everyone: the right choice depends on whether you prioritize purchase price, fuel use, AWD, performance, or premium equipment. Hyundai’s U.S. model page provides a photo gallery, but images should be checked against the exact trim and configuration because appearance and equipment differ across the range.

2026 Sonata price and trim comparison

Hyundai USA lists these starting MSRPs for the 2026 model. The figures exclude freight, tax, title, and license; dealer prices and availability can vary. They are not out-the-door prices.

Prices and powertrain details are from Hyundai USA’s 2026 Sonata page; Cars.com reports the same gas-trim fuel economy and describes equipment and lineup changes in its 2026 Sonata review. Hyundai’s starting MSRP display should not be confused with destination-inclusive totals. Cars.com lists totals that include a $1,245 destination charge: SE $28,545, SEL Sport $30,245, N Line $37,145, Blue Hybrid $30,295, SEL Hybrid $33,545, and Limited Hybrid $39,345. Get a current dealer quote to compare actual transaction and out-the-door costs.

Which Sonata powertrain should you choose?

SE: the lower-cost gas option

The SE pairs a 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder with front-wheel drive and an EPA estimate of 28/38/32 mpg city/highway/combined. It is the least expensive listed trim and may suit buyers who want a conventional gas sedan without moving up to the sportier or more feature-rich versions.

SEL Sport: available all-wheel drive

The SEL Sport uses the same 191-hp 2.5-liter engine and is the only Sonata trim with AWD available. EPA estimates are 25/36/29 mpg for FWD and 24/33/27 mpg for AWD. The AWD configuration’s current price should be confirmed with Hyundai or a dealer rather than assumed from the FWD listing.

N Line: the performance-oriented choice

The N Line has a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, and front-wheel drive. Cars.com reports 311 lb-ft of torque and that the trim is FWD-only. Its EPA estimate is 23/32/27 mpg. This is the Sonata to consider if power and sport-focused equipment matter more than maximizing fuel economy; the supplied specifications do not establish acceleration times.

Hybrids: prioritize fuel economy without plugging in

The Blue Hybrid is rated at 47/56/51 mpg, while the SEL Hybrid and Limited Hybrid are rated at 44/51/47 mpg. Hyundai lists 192 hp of combined gas-and-electric output. These hybrids do not require a charging plug: Hyundai says the system recharges through regenerative braking and the engine. The Blue is the efficiency leader; the more expensive hybrid trims trade some of that rated efficiency for additional equipment.

All mpg figures are EPA estimates, not guarantees of individual results. Hyundai notes that actual mileage varies with options, conditions, driving habits, and vehicle condition.

Limited Hybrid

Cars.com lists leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera system, blind-spot cameras, automated parking, and a head-up display among Limited Hybrid equipment. Hyundai also lists wireless device charging among select gas and hybrid features. Equipment can vary by market and package, so check the U.S. trim configurator or the window sticker for the specific car.

Fuel economy: EPA estimates and one real-world test

The Blue Hybrid’s EPA estimate is notably higher than the gas trims’ ratings, especially in city driving. That makes it a sensible starting point for shoppers who expect frequent stop-and-go use, while the regular gas SE’s 38-mpg highway estimate may be relevant to drivers focused on highway travel. These are standardized estimates for comparison; individual results depend on route, weather, driving style, and vehicle configuration.

In one test, Tom’s Guide reviewer John Velasco reported 38.8 mpg over 92.9 miles in a 2026 Sonata Hybrid Limited, 45.9 mpg during a longer highway test, and 56.7 mpg on a short-distance test. The review attributed the overall result partly to winter weather. Those figures describe one reviewer’s limited test, not a typical-owner forecast; see the Tom’s Guide test.

What do the safety ratings say?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports a Good headlight rating for the 2026 Sonata and an overall Good rating for pedestrian front crash prevention. Its forward collision prevention results include collision avoidance in passenger-car target tests at 31, 37, and 43 mph. Some IIHS results explicitly apply to 2024–26 models; check the IIHS 2026 Sonata page for each rating’s test and model-year applicability. These are results for specific evaluations, not a guarantee that the car will avoid every crash or that every listed feature is fitted to every vehicle.

What to check before buying

  • Compare complete dealer quotes, not just starting MSRPs. Hyundai’s displayed figures exclude freight and other charges, while Cars.com’s listed totals include a $1,245 destination charge.
  • Choose the drivetrain deliberately: the SEL Sport is the only trim with AWD, while the N Line is FWD-only.
  • Compare the EPA estimates for the exact powertrain and trim. The SEL Sport’s FWD and AWD ratings differ, as do the Blue Hybrid’s ratings and those of the other two hybrids.
  • Verify equipment on the actual car’s window sticker or current U.S. configurator, particularly if a feature is important to you.
  • Review the IIHS page by test and model-year applicability instead of treating an overall impression as a substitute for the individual results.
