The 2026 Hyundai Kona is worth a place on a U.S. small-SUV shortlist if you want several trim and powertrain choices, available all-wheel drive, a strong IIHS safety rating, and Hyundai’s advertised powertrain warranty. Its starting prices range from $25,500 to $32,535 before freight and other charges, so the right comparison is between the equipment and out-the-door price of the specific trims you’re considering—not just the entry price.
What makes the 2026 Kona worth considering?
The Kona’s case is a combination of accessible starting pricing, a choice of engines and drivetrains, a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and a long advertised powertrain warranty. Those facts make it a credible candidate to inspect and test-drive. They do not establish that it is more comfortable, spacious, economical to own, or better to drive than another small SUV; compare those qualities directly in the vehicles you’re shopping.
The figures and availability below refer to Hyundai’s U.S. 2026 model-year information. They should not be carried over to other markets or model years.
2026 Kona trims and starting prices
Hyundai lists four trims. These are starting MSRPs, not out-the-door prices; freight, taxes, title, license, options, dealer pricing, and availability affect what a buyer pays.

Engine, drivetrain, and fuel economy
Hyundai lists a 147-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder for base configurations and a 190-hp 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder on higher trims. Front-wheel drive is standard, and HTRAC all-wheel drive is available. Match the engine and drivetrain to the exact trim rather than assuming every Kona has the same setup.

Hyundai’s EPA estimates vary by trim and FWD/AWD configuration. The advertised maximum is up to 35 mpg highway; it is not a universal rating for every Kona. Check the specific vehicle’s EPA figures on Hyundai’s 2026 specifications page and consider whether AWD’s added capability suits your conditions and the associated fuel-economy trade-off.
How strong is the Kona’s safety case?
IIHS lists the 2026 Kona as a Top Safety Pick+. The award criteria include Good results in the small-overlap front, updated moderate-overlap front, and side crash tests, as well as acceptable or good headlights, Good pedestrian front crash prevention, and acceptable or good vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention. See the IIHS 2026 Top Safety Picks criteria.

The Kona rating page says its underlying ratings apply to 2024–2026 models and records Good results in those three crash tests. It also documents an engine-bay fire during IIHS’s first updated moderate-overlap test of a 2024 Kona N Line with the 1.6-liter turbo engine. IIHS says Hyundai modified N Line Konas built after December 2023 and recalled earlier affected vehicles to apply the fix. For an older or used example, check its build date and verify recall completion by VIN on the IIHS Kona rating page.
A safety award is useful evidence, but it does not erase the size difference between vehicle classes. IIHS notes: “Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones.”

Check recalls by VIN before buying
NHTSA filings identify two limited-production-date populations of 2026 Konas. Neither filing means every 2026 Kona is affected. Ask the seller to check the VIN and show whether any required remedy has been completed; buyers can also check through NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Recall 26V047: Certain Konas produced July 5 through November 1, 2025 may have an instrument-cluster display that intermittently reboots. NHTSA lists 2,777 potentially involved Konas. Details are in the NHTSA 26V047 filing.
- Recall 26V069: Certain Konas produced October 31 through December 22, 2025 may have front steering knuckles that can crack or fracture under certain conditions; a fracture may cause loss of steering control. NHTSA lists 4,555 potentially involved vehicles. See the NHTSA 26V069 filing.
What the warranty does—and does not—tell you
Hyundai advertises a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty for new Hyundais. It is subject to terms and limitations, so do not treat the headline as an unconditional promise for every owner or situation. Review the applicable model-year Hyundai warranty information and ask the dealer how the terms apply to the specific vehicle and buyer.
