For most daily drivers, the 2026 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus is the better everyday sedan. The Mazda combines useful turbocharged power with quieter sound isolation, more accommodating seats and a more forgiving ride. The 2026 Hyundai Elantra N is the better choice when your commute is also an excuse to seek out corners: it has more peak horsepower, a six-speed manual option and a more deliberately performance-focused setup.
That is a preference-based result, not a universal ranking. A driver who values involvement above softness may reasonably spend the money on the Hyundai, while someone covering long commutes or carrying passengers will likely appreciate the Mazda’s refinement.

What you are actually choosing
The Elantra N is the performance-first sedan
The Elantra N is designed around the driver’s interest in acceleration, gear selection and repeated spirited driving. Its 276-hp rating gives it the higher peak number in this pairing, and the availability of a six-speed manual makes it the only car here that lets you choose every shift yourself. The optional eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission is the alternative for drivers who want two-pedal convenience without giving up a performance-oriented drivetrain.
That focus affects normal commuting. A firm sport seat, a more purposeful chassis response and the need to pay attention to fuel choice can be worthwhile on a back road, but they are not automatically advantages during a two-hour highway trip.
The Mazda3 Turbo is the fast-but-composed sedan
The Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus gives up 26 hp to the Hyundai but supplies up to 320 lb-ft of torque when operated on Mazda’s recommended premium fuel. Mazda pairs that engine with a six-speed automatic and a package that the cited road test found quieter, more comfortable and easier to live with every day.

Both have enough output for confident merging and passing. The meaningful distinction is where each car spends its engineering emphasis: the Hyundai leans toward engagement, while the Mazda tries to make speed feel polished.
Power, transmissions and driving character
Elantra N: 276 hp and two distinct ways to drive it
Hyundai’s 2026 U.S. specifications list 276 hp for the Elantra N. The six-speed manual is the choice for buyers who want direct control and a traditional performance-car experience. The optional eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission removes clutch-pedal work and is the logical selection for stop-and-go traffic or drivers who prefer automatic shifting.
Transmission choice changes the official fuel-economy rating as well as the experience. Hyundai’s figures are 21 mpg city, 29 highway and 24 combined with the manual; the DCT version is rated at 20 city, 27 highway and 23 combined. Those are configuration-specific EPA estimates, not a promise of what every driver will achieve.
Mazda3 Turbo: torque and automatic convenience
Mazda lists up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft for the 2.5 Turbo when using its recommended premium fuel. The sedan uses a six-speed automatic. That simpler configuration may appeal to commuters who do not want to choose between a clutch pedal and a dual-clutch calibration every morning.

- EAST TO CLEAN: Floor mats and trunk mats for Elantra are easy to clean and maintain. Just remove them from the car and rinse them with water, they will look like new. This durable material can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth
Peak horsepower does not tell the whole story. The Hyundai has the larger top-end number and a more overtly athletic mission; the Mazda’s torque figure and automatic operation can make ordinary acceleration feel effortless. A test drive should include a gentle launch, a mid-speed passing maneuver and a longer highway run rather than relying on a specification sheet alone.
Fuel grade matters to the Hyundai’s headline output
Hyundai’s 2025 Elantra N page states: “Premium fuel required to achieve estimated maximum horsepower of 276 hp. Use of regular fuel will result in reduced horsepower.” That quotation is explicitly from the 2025 page. Treat it as a warning about the relationship between fuel grade and advertised output, then confirm the exact requirement in the current 2026 owner’s manual or fuel-label guidance before purchase.
Mazda’s 320-lb-ft statement is likewise tied to recommended premium fuel. If regular fuel is your normal choice, ask each dealer for the current manual’s guidance and budget accordingly; do not compare the two torque or horsepower claims as though fuel grade were irrelevant.
Which is more comfortable for commuting?
Seat design and long-drive fatigue
In Tom’s Guide’s week-long comparison, the reviewer found the Elantra N’s sport bucket seats stiff and less forgiving on long drives. The Mazda3 Turbo’s power-adjustable leather-trimmed seats received the more favorable assessment, including lumbar support and memory functions. Those are firsthand impressions from one reviewer rather than laboratory measurements, so drivers with different body shapes should sit in both cars for at least 20 minutes.
The practical question is not whether the Hyundai seats are “bad.” They are shaped to hold you during enthusiastic driving. The question is whether that extra support and firmness remain welcome after an hour of traffic, a long highway journey or repeated passenger use.
Ride and cabin noise
The same review favored the Mazda for sound isolation and for its more forgiving response over potholes. That matters on broken urban pavement, expansion joints and coarse freeway surfaces, where a car that filters impacts and tire noise can reduce fatigue even when both cars are mechanically reliable.
The Elantra N’s firmer, more performance-led responses are part of its appeal on smooth roads. If your route is mostly well-maintained pavement and you actively seek winding roads on weekends, the trade-off may feel worthwhile. If your route is dominated by patched asphalt, the Mazda’s compliance is the more relevant advantage.

Real-world fuel economy versus EPA ratings
Use the official ratings to compare configurations, and use the road-test observations only as a small sample of what happened under one person’s conditions. Tom’s Guide recorded 25.3 mpg for the Elantra N over 144.9 miles and 25.5 mpg for the Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus over 166.6 miles during its one-week test.
| Measure | Elantra N | Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus |
|---|---|---|
| EPA city/highway/combined | 21/29/24 mpg manual; 20/27/23 mpg DCT | 23/32/27 mpg in the review’s specific trim table |
| Observed in Tom’s Guide test | 25.3 mpg over 144.9 miles | 25.5 mpg over 166.6 miles |
Mazda’s official 2026 sedan page presents a wider 23–27-mpg city and 32–36-mpg highway range because it covers multiple sedan configurations. Do not substitute that range for the Turbo Premium Plus rating. Traffic, temperature, tire pressure, route elevation, fuel grade and driving style can all move your result; the two test observations are not a controlled fuel-cost study.
Passenger room, trunk space and carrying awkward cargo
Published comparison measurements favor the Hyundai
Tom’s Guide reported 38 inches of rear legroom and a 14.2-cubic-foot trunk for the Elantra N, compared with 35.1 inches and 13.2 cubic feet for the Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus. On those measurements, the Hyundai gives rear passengers more claimed legroom and offers the larger trunk.
Because these figures come from the comparison review, confirm the exact dimensions with current manufacturer specifications if rear-seat space or cargo volume is a deciding factor. Seating position, front-seat adjustment and the shape of the trunk opening can matter as much as a nominal inch.
The Elantra N has a pass-through caveat
The reviewer noted that a brace behind the Elantra N’s rear seats interfered with larger pass-through cargo. A bigger listed trunk does not automatically mean it will accept a long, wide or irregular item more easily. During a dealership visit, bring the largest object you routinely carry—such as a stroller, instrument case or folded equipment—and test the opening with the rear seats configured as you would use them.
The Mazda’s smaller reported trunk and rear legroom may be perfectly adequate for a couple or a small family, especially if the front occupants do not need to sit far back. The Hyundai’s numerical advantage is most useful when rear passengers are tall or the trunk is frequently loaded to its limits.

Why the Elantra comparison is not a simple award-label contest
IIHS’s 2025 Elantra page says its Top Safety Pick+ award applies to vehicles built after October 2024 and identifies production-date qualifications for updated ratings. That means a badge on a page is not enough to establish that every Elantra, every production date or the N trim has identical results.
The available information does not establish an exact trim-to-trim safety winner between these two cars. Before signing, record the vehicle identification number or build date, check the current IIHS entry for that production window and verify which driver-assistance equipment is standard on the exact car. Compare the tests and criteria, not just the words “Top Safety Pick+” or “five-star.”

In the October 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison, the Elantra N carried a reported $36,600 MSRP and an as-tested price of $38,345. The Mazda3 Turbo Premium Plus was listed at $36,740 MSRP and $39,145 as tested. The Mazda therefore cost $800 more in those particular test configurations, while the reported MSRPs were only $140 apart.
These are dated U.S. figures from specific cars, not live quotes. Destination charges, taxes, dealer fees, accessories, financing, regional availability and later model-year changes can alter the amount you pay. Ask for an itemized worksheet that separates base price, destination, options and mandatory fees.
At nearly identical list prices, the decision is primarily about what equipment and behavior you value. Paying for the Hyundai buys access to its performance-oriented package and manual option. Paying for the Mazda buys the turbo sedan’s comfort-oriented equipment and the refinement praised in the road test. Neither price proves that one car is objectively better value for every driver.
Choose the Elantra N if these priorities describe you
- You want the higher 276-hp peak rating and a car built around enthusiastic driving.
- You specifically want a six-speed manual; the Mazda3 Turbo sedan in this comparison uses a six-speed automatic.
- Your favorite roads are smooth and winding, and a firmer sport seat or ride is an acceptable trade-off.
- You are willing to follow the current fuel guidance needed to achieve the advertised output.
- You regularly carry rear passengers and value the comparison review’s larger rear-legroom and trunk measurements, while accepting the brace-related pass-through limitation.
Choose the Mazda3 Turbo if these priorities describe you
- Your daily route includes potholes, rough pavement or long highway stretches.
- You place a high value on quieter sound isolation and seats with power adjustment, lumbar support and memory.
- You want strong turbocharged torque without choosing a manual transmission.
- You prefer the comfort-oriented car in the cited road test and can live with its smaller reported rear-seat and trunk measurements.
- You want the Mazda’s advertised 2026 safety claims, while still checking the underlying ratings and equipment for the exact vehicle.
A useful test-drive plan
A short loop around a dealership can hide the differences that matter most in daily use. Drive both cars on the same route and perform the same checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Adjust the driver’s seat for your normal posture, then sit behind it. Note knee clearance, cushion comfort and whether the steering wheel reaches you without an awkward backrest angle.
- Use the road you actually drive. Include a rough patch, a speed bump, a freeway entrance and a sustained highway section if possible. Listen for tire and wind noise and observe how each car handles sharp edges.
- Test the powertrain in ordinary traffic. Make a gentle start, a mid-speed pass and a stop-and-go segment. In the Hyundai, compare the manual and DCT if both are available; in the Mazda, judge how the automatic responds when you request quick acceleration.
- Inspect the cargo opening. Bring a representative item and load it. Check the Elantra N’s rear-seat brace and the Mazda’s opening rather than relying only on cubic-foot figures.
- Confirm fuel and build information. Ask which fuel grade the dealer recommends for the exact VIN, record the production date and verify the applicable safety ratings and standard equipment.
- Request a written price. Compare the same line items—vehicle price, destination, options, taxes and fees—so a difference between dealer worksheets is not mistaken for a difference between the cars.
Bottom line
The Mazda3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus is the stronger daily-driving recommendation because the cited test found it quieter, more comfortable over potholes and easier on long journeys, while still delivering substantial turbocharged performance. The Elantra N is the more compelling enthusiast tool: it has 276 hp, a manual-transmission choice and a setup that makes spirited driving the central experience. Choose based on the roads, passengers and fuel habits you have—not on horsepower alone.
