The 2026 U.S.-market Honda Prelude is a 200-hp, front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe; the North American car often meant by “2001 Legend” was sold as the Acura 3.5 RL, a 210-hp V6 sedan. They are not direct successors or like-for-like rivals. The useful comparison is how their powertrains, transmission experiences, body styles and equipment differ across 25 years.
Honda’s historical material says the Legend name changed to 3.5 RL in North America for 2001. Other markets may have used different naming, so this comparison identifies the older car as the North American Acura 3.5 RL rather than treating “2001 Legend” as a universal model name.

1. The Prelude’s hybrid system makes torque differently from the RL’s V6
For the 2026 U.S. Prelude, Honda lists a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine rated at 141 hp and 134 lb-ft, paired with an AC synchronous permanent-magnet electric motor rated at 181 hp and 232 lb-ft. Honda gives the two-motor hybrid system a total output of 200 system horsepower. The 232 lb-ft figure is the motor’s listed torque; it should not be added to the engine’s 134 lb-ft as though Honda had published a combined system-torque rating. See Honda’s 2026 Prelude specifications and 2026 Prelude press kit.

Honda’s 2001 model material lists 210 hp at 5,200 rpm and 224 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm. Those figures describe a conventional gasoline engine, unlike the Prelude’s hybrid system, whose electric motor has its own listed torque output. Honda’s 2001 Acura 3.5 RL introduction provides the period specifications.

- This plastic model requires assembly and painting. Adhesives, tools, paints, etc., sold separately
- 1/24 scale unpainted plastic model assembly kit
- Size when completed: Total length 7.4 inches (189 mm), Total width 3.4 inches (87 mm), Total height

For an era-specific reference, the 2001 Prelude—not the Legend/RL—was listed at 200 hp and 156 lb-ft for its manual version. That detail helps separate the two 2001 Hondas that can be confused in a comparison: see American Honda’s 2001 Prelude specifications.
2. S+ Shift simulates shifting; it is not a conventional multi-speed gearbox
The 2026 Prelude’s specification sheet identifies a direct drive unit, alongside S+ Shift paddle shifters. Honda describes S+ Shift as a simulated transmission experience: its consumer page says the system simulates a traditional dual-clutch automatic, while the press kit calls it a performance “8-speed transmission experience.” Those are Honda’s descriptions of the feature, not evidence that the car has a conventional eight-speed gearbox. Read the technical specifications alongside Honda’s Prelude feature page and press kit.

The 2001 RL, by contrast, had a four-speed electronically controlled automatic, according to Honda’s 2001 RL material. The 2001 Prelude was offered with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic; that is a specification for the Prelude, not the RL.

Honda lists the 2026 Prelude as a coupe. The cited North American 2001 Acura 3.5 RL material identifies a four-door sedan. Comparing them is therefore most useful as a look at changing powertrain and driver-interface technology, not as a direct successor comparison or a claim that they serve the same buyer.

The model name also needs a market qualifier: Acura’s historical account says the name became 3.5 RL in 2001 and that the preceding model had replaced the Legend sedan. That North American naming history does not establish what every market called its 2001 car.
4. The 2026 Prelude’s U.S. fuel-economy ratings and prices
American Honda’s current U.S. specifications list the Prelude at 46 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 44 mpg combined. The specification page marks these figures as being for comparison purposes; they are manufacturer-published ratings, not an independent road-test result. Honda’s consumer page highlights the city and highway figures. Check the specification page for the stated ratings.

As listed on that U.S. page on October 3, 2026, the starting prices are $42,000 for Prelude Hybrid and $42,500 for Prelude Hybrid Two-Tone. Honda’s footnote excludes tax, license, registration, accessories and a $1,295 destination charge. Prices, trim availability and destination charges can change, so verify them with Honda or a dealer before buying. The figures do not establish the 2001 RL’s current used-market value.
5. Honda lists modern chassis and drive-mode equipment
Honda’s 2026 U.S. specifications list four drive modes—Comfort, GT, Sport and Individual—plus adaptive dampers, a dual-axis MacPherson strut front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, front-wheel drive and four-piston Brembo front calipers. Honda says S+ Shift works alongside the four modes. These are equipment and feature descriptions; they do not, by themselves, establish how the car performs in independent testing.

The RL comparison here is grounded in Honda’s historical model material, not a side-by-side test. The available specifications support a comparison of listed hardware and powertrain architecture, but not conclusions about which car is quicker, more comfortable or more engaging to drive.
