What off-road equipment does the Armada PRO-4X have?
Nissan lists the 2025 Armada PRO-4X with Intelligent 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, an electronic locking rear differential, Hill Descent Control, and an eight-mode Drive and Terrain Mode Selector. The manufacturer’s 2025 Armada brochure and 2025 Armada press kit describe that model-year equipment.
Those features do different jobs. The selector changes the vehicle’s drive-mode configuration, while the transfer case provides 4WD positions. HDC helps manage vehicle speed on qualifying descents. A terrain mode alone does not determine the appropriate 4WD position or make a surface safe to cross.
Which 4WD setting should you use?
The 2026 Armada owner’s manual describes AUTO, 4H, and 4L for vehicles so equipped. It also documents links between the Drive Mode Selector and available 4WD positions. Use the controls and guidance in the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle; Nissan warns against driving in 4H or 4L on dry, hard-surface roads because it can cause unnecessary noise, tire wear, and increased fuel consumption.

Mode names and the eight-mode selector are from Nissan’s 2025 Armada press kit; the listed interlocks are from the 2026 owner’s manual. Nissan also lists a five-mode selector across trims, so the eight-mode list is specific to the PRO-4X equipment described for 2025, not every Armada.
How to use Hill Descent Control
Nissan says HDC helps maintain vehicle speed “when driving under 20 MPH (30 km/h) on a steep descent that engine braking alone in Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) mode cannot control the speed.” The threshold and operating details here are from the 2026 Armada owner’s manual, not a blanket specification for all model years.

Meet the activation conditions
According to that manual, HDC requires all of the following:
- The transmission is in forward or reverse gear.
- The vehicle is in 4H or 4L, if equipped.
- Vehicle speed is under 20 mph (30 km/h).
- The HDC switch is set to ON.
The switch location and exact operating procedure can vary by model year; consult the owner’s manual for your vehicle rather than relying on a generic control description.

Manage speed on the descent
On a forward descent, the driver can adjust speed with the brake or accelerator. In reverse, HDC maintains speed. The brake lamps illuminate while the system applies the brakes. Pressing either the accelerator or brake temporarily stops HDC; it resumes when the pedal is released if the activation conditions are still met.
Understand the indicator and system limits
- If activation conditions are not met or the system disengages, the HDC indicator blinks.
- Continuous use for a long time can raise the VDC actuator temperature and temporarily disable HDC.
- HDC is intended for steep, slow descents that 4WD engine braking alone cannot control; it is not a substitute for selecting an appropriate route and driving carefully.

What should you know about the PRO-4X’s tires?
Nissan’s 2025 brochure lists 275/60R20 all-terrain tires for the PRO-4X. Treat that as the listed factory specification for that model year, not a universal fitment recommendation: verify the size and load rating for the specific vehicle before buying replacement tires. The specification appears in the 2025 Armada brochure.
