An electronic starter-alternator is a reversible motor-generator: it starts the combustion engine like a starter, makes electricity like an alternator, and can briefly assist the engine. In many mild hybrids, a belt-driven 48V unit performs those jobs while recovering energy during braking or deceleration.
What is an electronic starter-alternator?
It is one electrical machine that switches between motor and generator modes under power-electronic control. As a motor, it can restart the engine and provide torque assistance. As a generator, it supplies electrical energy and, during deceleration or braking, recovers some energy that would otherwise be lost.
Valeo describes its 48V iBSG as a belt-driven reversible starter-generator fitted in the engine in place of the alternator. Bosch describes a combined starter-generator connected to a 48V battery; some designs integrate it into the engine’s conventional belt-driven generator position. The term can therefore describe a function, while the physical layout varies by vehicle.
How a 48V starter-generator works
Starting and assisting the engine
When the engine needs to start, the control system directs electrical energy from the 48V battery to the machine, which turns as a motor. The same motor function can provide torque assistance during launch or acceleration, helping the engine meet demand.

- Disconnect the 48V battery. Wait for 5 minutes. Code using diagnostic tools after installation.
Recovering and reusing energy
During braking or deceleration, the machine turns as a generator. The resulting electricity replenishes the 48V battery. The vehicle can later use that stored energy for engine restarts, torque assistance, or electrical loads. A DC-DC converter supplies the conventional 12V network from the 48V system.
What the system can enable
- Smoother stop-start operation by restarting the engine electrically.
- Engine-off coasting in vehicles calibrated to use that function.
- Torque assistance that can reduce the engine’s workload in some driving situations.
- Improved efficiency through energy recuperation and reduced engine load.
These are capabilities of the architecture, not guarantees that every vehicle offers each feature or achieves the same efficiency improvement.

How it differs from a conventional alternator
A conventional alternator generates electricity but does not normally serve as the engine’s starter motor. A reversible starter-alternator can do both jobs, and in a mild hybrid it may also recuperate braking energy and provide limited torque assistance. Its motor operation, battery, and power electronics make it more than an alternator with a different name.

What to compare between starter-generator systems
Two units described as “48V starter-generators” may differ substantially. For a vehicle comparison or replacement decision, check the complete system rather than voltage or peak power alone.
- Layout: belt-integrated or integrated into the drivetrain.
- Electrical system: 12V or 48V architecture, battery compatibility, DC-DC converter, and inverter or other power electronics.
- Performance: peak and continuous power, peak torque, and recuperation capability.
- Mechanical fit: belt routing and width, tensioner, pulley or decoupler, and cooling method.
- Vehicle integration: control software, calibration, restart behavior, and availability of vehicle-specific service parts.
Can you replace a hybrid starter-generator yourself?
Do not choose a part based only on a listing’s use of “hybrid alternator” or “48V starter-generator.” Compatibility depends on the vehicle’s belt drive, tensioner, pulley, battery, inverter or converter, wiring, cooling, software, and calibration. A part that appears physically similar may still be electrically or electronically incompatible.

Confirm fitment before ordering
- Identify the vehicle year, make, model, engine, and 48V architecture.
- Find the original-equipment part number and confirm that the replacement is specified for it.
- Verify belt routing and width, pulley or decoupler design, electrical connector, cooling arrangement, and inverter compatibility.
- Check whether installation requires coding, calibration, or vehicle-specific procedures.
Treat generic marketplace listings as leads until fitment is confirmed. Valeo Service warns that incorrect removal or installation can damage the part or injure the technician. Use the vehicle-specific service procedure and assess the required skills and precautions before attempting the job.
