The 2026 Honda Prelude is the efficiency-and-comfort pick among its closest U.S. coupe alternatives. The Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ are aimed at drivers who want a more traditional sports-coupe experience, while the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a compact two-seat, roadster-style choice. They are not interchangeable: the best fit depends on whether you prioritize everyday economy, driver involvement or an open-air-oriented two-seat layout.
How the Prelude compares with its closest rivals
Honda’s published specifications and comparisons provide the figures below. Its head-to-head pages are manufacturer comparisons, not independent tests. The independent road-test observations cited here come from an Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press; that test covered the Prelude and GR86, not the BRZ or Miata RF.
| Model | Powertrain and layout | Published fuel economy | Published cargo volume | Price information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Honda Prelude | 200-hp two-motor hybrid system; front-wheel drive (Honda) | 46 city / 41 highway / 44 combined mpg (EPA ratings published by Honda) | 11.6 cu. ft. in Honda’s competitive comparison; 15.1 cu. ft. in a separate Honda comparison | $42,000 starting MSRP on Honda’s U.S. page; Honda’s November 2025 pricing release lists $43,195 including destination |
| Toyota GR86 | 228 hp in Honda’s comparison; rear-wheel drive, with an available manual, according to the AP-hosted Edmunds test | Not stated in the cited material | 6.3 cu. ft. in Honda’s competitive comparison | Not stated in the cited material |
| Subaru BRZ | 228 hp in Honda’s comparison | 21 city / 30 highway / 25 combined mpg for the automatic, in Honda’s comparison | Not stated in the cited material | Not stated in the cited material |
| Mazda MX-5 Miata RF | 181 hp in Honda’s comparison | 26 city / 35 highway mpg for the automatic, in Honda’s comparison | 4.48 cu. ft. in one Honda comparison; 4.5 cu. ft. in another | Not stated in the cited material |
Honda’s competitive material gives different Prelude cargo figures—11.6 and 15.1 cu. ft.—in separate comparisons. Those are Honda-published comparison values, not independent measurements; the figures should not be treated as a single settled measurement. Price figures also need context: the $42,000 figure is the starting MSRP shown on Honda’s U.S. page, while the $43,195 figure in its November 2025 release includes destination. Both exclude taxes, registration, options and dealer-specific pricing.
Honda Prelude: best for efficiency, comfort and everyday usefulness
The Prelude’s defining difference is its hybrid powertrain. Honda lists a 200-hp two-motor system, front-wheel drive and EPA fuel-economy ratings of 46 mpg city, 41 highway and 44 combined. Those ratings make it the clear economy-focused choice among the figures available here, especially against Honda’s automatic BRZ comparison of 21/30/25 mpg and automatic Miata RF comparison of 26/35 mpg.

- Detailed model kit in scale 1:24.
- , tools, glue and paints are not included in the box contents of the plastic kit. These must be purchased optionally.
- International products have separate terms, are sold from abroad and may differ from local products, including fit, age ratings, and language of product, labeling or instructions.
That powertrain also reflects the Prelude’s broader role: it is a sporty-looking coupe with a more comfort-oriented, daily-use emphasis than the traditional sports-coupe alternatives. In the Edmunds test republished by AP, the Prelude was described as smoother in congested traffic and more comfortable and practical than the GR86. Honda’s equipment and connectivity comparisons also position the Prelude as the amenities-minded option; those comparisons are Honda’s own, rather than independent evaluations.
Practicality has limits: cargo-volume figures vary between Honda comparisons, and the available comparison does not establish a directly comparable rear-seat assessment for every rival. Still, the Prelude has the stronger cargo-volume figures in Honda’s comparisons against both the GR86 and Miata RF. Its rear seats and coupe layout make it a different kind of daily proposition from the two-seat Miata.

Toyota GR86: best for traditional sports-coupe involvement
The GR86 is the strongest match for a shopper who values the conventional sports-car formula: rear-wheel drive, an available manual transmission and a more driver-focused experience. In the Edmunds test republished by AP on August 26, 2026, the manual GR86 reached 60 mph in 6.0 seconds, while the tested Prelude took 7.2 seconds. Those are results for the specific cars in that test, not guaranteed times for every trim, transmission or test condition.

- Authentic Paint & Graphics
- Die-cast metal body and chassis
Edmunds praised the GR86’s steering feel and balance. The tradeoff is that the Prelude came across as smoother in congested traffic and stronger in comfort, fuel economy and cargo utility. Neither car is categorically better: the GR86 is the engagement-first choice, while the Prelude is the more economy- and everyday-oriented one.

The BRZ is the closest conceptual alternative to the GR86 in this group: Honda’s comparison lists 228 hp for both, against the Prelude’s 200 system horsepower. Honda’s comparison lists 21 city, 30 highway and 25 combined mpg for the BRZ automatic, substantially below the Prelude’s EPA ratings as published by Honda.

The available independent test evidence here covers the GR86 and Prelude, not the BRZ. So the BRZ’s case is best framed by its sports-coupe positioning and the manufacturer comparison figures, rather than by claims about independently measured acceleration or handling. Choose this kind of car if the conventional sports-coupe experience matters more than hybrid efficiency and comfort-oriented amenities.
Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: best for a compact two-seat roadster experience
The Miata RF serves a different purpose from the three coupes: it is a compact, two-seat roadster-style alternative. Honda’s model-year comparison lists 181 hp and automatic-transmission EPA ratings of 26 mpg city and 35 highway. Honda lists 4.48 cu. ft. of cargo volume in one comparison and 4.5 cu. ft. in another, versus 15.1 cu. ft. for the Prelude in the same comparison that reports the 4.48-cu.-ft. Miata figure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThose figures underscore the Miata’s compromise: it suits buyers who want a small two-seat experience, not shoppers who need rear seats or coupe-like cargo usefulness. The Honda-published figures are comparison data, not independent measurements, and the available evidence here does not establish a separate independent Miata road-test result.
Quick Recap
Which rival should you choose?
- Choose the Prelude if fuel economy, a hybrid powertrain, commuting comfort and useful cargo space matter most.
- Choose the GR86 if rear-wheel drive, an available manual and the tested car’s stronger acceleration and steering feel are more important than economy and comfort.
- Consider the BRZ if you want the conventional sports-coupe category represented by the 228-hp model in Honda’s comparison, while accepting that the evidence here does not include a separate independent BRZ road test.
- Choose the Miata RF if a compact two-seat roadster-style layout matters more than rear seats and cargo capacity.
