1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 2026 Honda Prelude is a front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe with thoughtful chassis hardware, useful efficiency and a clear omission for enthusiasts: it has no conventional manual transmission. Honda’s S+ Shift system imitates some shift sensations, but it does not turn the Prelude into a manual. The result is a more comfort-minded, economical coupe than a traditional sports-car formula—and whether that feels like a compromise depends on what you want from a Prelude.
What is the new Prelude missing?
A conventional manual gearbox. Honda says the Prelude’s two-motor hybrid system has neither a traditional transmission nor a CVT. Instead, drive reaches the wheels through a fixed ratio. Its S+ Shift feature coordinates engine-speed control, the traction motor and steering-wheel paddle shifters to simulate gear changes. That can add a sense of rhythm to acceleration, but there is no clutch pedal or manual transmission underneath it. Honda’s U.S. launch announcement explains the system.

That distinction matters because the missing manual is not just a missing option on an otherwise conventional sports coupe: the car’s hybrid drivetrain is designed around a different approach. Drivers who want to choose gears themselves, work a clutch, or have a direct mechanical connection between those actions and the drivetrain will not find that experience here.

A hybrid system with useful efficiency
Honda’s November 18, 2025 U.S. specifications list a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine paired with a two-motor hybrid system, front-wheel drive and 200 total system horsepower. Honda also lists 232 lb-ft of traction-motor torque; that is the motor’s figure, not a separate combined-system torque rating. The published EPA estimates are 46 mpg city, 41 highway and 44 combined. Those are estimates, not a promise of real-world mileage. Honda’s 2026 Prelude specifications provide the figures.

Chassis parts with a Type R connection
Honda says the Prelude uses Civic Type R-derived dual-axis front suspension, wide tracks, large brakes with Brembo front calipers and adaptive dampers tuned specifically for this coupe. The hardware gives the Prelude a credible performance foundation, but manufacturer descriptions alone do not prove that it outperforms a rival. Its character depends on how the car’s steering, suspension and hybrid power delivery work together on the road.
Comfort and everyday usability
In an Edmunds comparison published by the Associated Press on August 26, 2026, reviewers found the Prelude more comfortable and practical for everyday use than the manual Toyota GR86 they tested. The comparison credits the Prelude’s adaptive suspension and cabin, as well as its daily usability. These are the Prelude’s strongest answers to the missing-manual criticism: it aims to be an engaging coupe that is also easier to live with, rather than a purist’s lightweight sports car. Read the AP-carried Edmunds comparison.

Prelude vs. manual Toyota GR86: which fits your priorities?
The GR86 makes a useful contrast because it offers the conventional sports-car ingredients the Prelude omits. In Edmunds’ comparison, the tested GR86 had a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive; the Prelude had front-wheel drive and simulated shift behavior. Their measured acceleration and the reviewers’ comments show the trade-off more clearly than a simple horsepower comparison.
| Comparison | 2026 Honda Prelude | Toyota GR86 in Edmunds’ comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission and drive layout | Two-motor hybrid; no conventional transmission or CVT; front-wheel drive. Honda says S+ Shift simulates shift responses. | Manual transmission and rear-wheel drive in the car Edmunds tested. |
| 0–60 mph | 7.2 seconds in Edmunds’ test. | 6.0 seconds in Edmunds’ test of a manual GR86. |
| Driving and daily-use emphasis | Edmunds favored its comfort, adaptive suspension, cabin and everyday practicality. | Edmunds found it stronger on driver engagement and acceleration. |
The 0–60 mph times are results from Edmunds’ particular test cars, not guaranteed outcomes for every Prelude or GR86. The comparison supports a practical decision: choose the GR86 if a manual, rear-wheel drive and sharper acceleration are central to the experience you want; consider the Prelude if comfort, hybrid efficiency and everyday usability matter more. The cited comparison concerns specific model years, so it should not be used to infer current prices for both cars.

How much did the 2026 Prelude cost at launch?
Honda’s U.S. announcement on November 18, 2025 listed one Prelude trim at $42,000 MSRP before destination. The listed destination charge was $1,195, bringing the announced price to $43,195 including destination. Honda noted that dealer prices may vary and that the figure excludes tax, license, registration and options. This is a dated launch price, not a current dealer quote. Honda’s announcement includes the price and its exclusions.
Who should consider the new Prelude?
- Consider it if you want a coupe with a hybrid powertrain, Honda’s published EPA estimates, adaptive suspension and a more comfort-oriented daily-driving character.
- Look elsewhere if a clutch pedal and conventional manual are essential, or if you specifically want the rear-wheel-drive layout and quicker tested acceleration Edmunds found in its GR86.
- Check fitment before replacing tires. Honda lists 235/40R19 all-season tires as standard, and says high-performance summer tires are available. Confirm the exact fitment and requirements for your car before buying replacements. Honda’s specifications list the standard tire size; its launch announcement notes the summer-tire availability.
Verdict: the missing manual defines the Prelude’s character
The Prelude is not a manual sports coupe in disguise. Honda’s hybrid system, fixed-ratio drive and S+ Shift make it a different kind of coupe: one that pairs a hybrid powertrain with performance-oriented chassis hardware and a more comfortable, practical character. Its missing conventional manual will matter to enthusiasts who want control over each gear. For drivers who value efficiency and everyday comfort more, the Prelude’s compromises may be exactly what make it appealing.
