Mercedes brought a substantial aerodynamic update for its 2026 W17 to Sepang, with reported changes spanning the floor, sidepods, rear bodywork and suspension area. The package is intended to improve airflow and downforce efficiency, but no measured on-track gain has been established; as Team Principal Toto Wolff put it, “The stopwatch is always the final judge.”
What changed on the Mercedes W17?
Motorsport Week reported on October 1 that the Sepang package was the W17’s first major aerodynamic upgrade since May. Its account describes new sidepod bodywork with a pronounced ramp intended to direct airflow toward the rear axle, revisions to the floor and bodywork gills to address Malaysia’s heat. A technical overview published by the same outlet the following day adds detail on the floor and rear-end components.

| Area | Reported change | Intended role |
|---|---|---|
| Floor | Redesigned floor board, floor edge, floor corner and floor body, according to Motorsport Week’s October 2 technical overview. | Increase local aerodynamic load and make performance more robust across the operating window. |
| Sidepods and rear bodywork | Revised sidepod bodywork with a larger ramp; Motorsport.com described the bodywork as slimmer toward the rear. | Guide airflow toward the rear axle and support more efficient downforce generation. |
| Rear suspension area | Reprofiled suspension fairings and repositioned rear-drum winglets, according to Motorsport Week. | Work with the revised bodywork and floor airflow. |
| Cooling-related bodywork | Bodywork gills were reported as part of the package. | Accommodate Malaysia’s heat. |
The component descriptions and aims are technical reporting, not a direct Mercedes press statement. Motorsport.com characterized the package as seven components across the floor, sidepods, rear bodywork and rear suspension.

The stated aerodynamic objective is to improve overall downforce without adding drag. The floor changes were also reported as targeting more local load and greater robustness through the car’s operating window. Those are development goals: the published accounts do not establish that the revised parts delivered a specific lap-time or race-performance improvement.

Motorsport Week reported that a downforce gain “can be as high as four per cent,” but presented this as a suggested potential figure. It supplied no measurement method or verified track result, so the number should not be read as a confirmed improvement from the Sepang package.
Why was the update brought to Sepang?
The event is the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, held at the Sepang International Circuit. Formula 1 reported on September 30 that Mercedes planned to bring an update package and revealed a PETRONAS-inspired green-and-black special livery for the W17. The Malaysian circuit had previously hosted Grands Prix from 1999 through 2017 before this event.

- A great gift idea!
Wolff said the weekend had extra significance because of Mercedes’ long-standing relationship with PETRONAS, and described Sepang as “a demanding circuit that asks every question of the car.” The heat-related gills reported on the car are a circuit-context detail; they do not by themselves demonstrate an aerodynamic performance gain.

How to judge the W17 package
The update is best understood as a testable development step rather than proof that Mercedes has moved ahead of its rivals. Wolff cautioned that “there are no guarantees in F1” and said “The stopwatch is always the final judge.” A meaningful assessment depends on observed performance, not the number of revised parts or a potential percentage quoted without a disclosed measurement basis.

Other teams also brought changes for the Malaysian event: Motorsport Week’s October 2 survey noted McLaren cooling-related engine-cover revisions, Red Bull floor alterations and Ferrari diffuser changes. Those descriptions are not a controlled comparison, and they do not show which package produced the largest gain.

Mercedes describes the W17 as its 2026 challenger, built for the season’s revised chassis, power-unit and fuel regulations. The manufacturer characterizes it as smaller, narrower and lighter than its predecessor, with active front and rear aerodynamics and a near-even combustion/electric power split. This is broader car context, not a measurement of the Sepang upgrade.

For its summary of the new chassis regulations, Mercedes lists a 200 mm shorter wheelbase, 100 mm narrower width and minimum weight around 30 kg lighter than under the previous rules. These figures describe the regulations and the manufacturer’s comparison with the prior rules; they are not dimensions or weight reductions attributable to this aerodynamic package.
