Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single best road-trip powertrain: an EV can suit a route with convenient charging and stops you’re happy to make, a conventional hybrid combines gasoline refueling with efficient operation, and a gas car offers familiar refueling convenience. Choose by the specific vehicle, route, weather, energy prices and your preferred stop pattern—not by powertrain label alone.
Which powertrain fits your kind of road trip?
| Powertrain | What may make it a good fit | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| EV | You can plan charging stops along the route and are comfortable aligning breaks with charging. | Usable highway range in expected weather and terrain; charger locations, compatibility and charging speed; and whether the route works with your preferred stop pattern. |
| Conventional hybrid | You want a gasoline vehicle that can operate efficiently without plugging in. | Fuel economy for the particular model and route, along with passenger, luggage and comfort needs. |
| Gas car | You value familiar gasoline refueling and want to avoid planning public charging stops. | Fuel economy, fuel type and cost for the actual route, plus vehicle space and comfort. |
These are category-level trade-offs, not a ranking of current models. Passenger capacity, luggage room, comfort and specific range or fuel-economy figures depend on the vehicle and trim; compare model-year specifications that match your needs.

Can you take an electric car on a long road trip?
Yes, if the route and charging plan work for the vehicle. EPA says that route-planning apps can help drivers understand what an EV road trip is like. Before leaving, map charging stops and check that the vehicle can reach them with a reasonable margin in the expected conditions. Public charging can require more planning than gasoline refueling, and there are still far more gas stations than public charging stations, according to the EPA’s charging guidance.
Charging ports vary by automaker. Confirm that each planned station’s connector is compatible with your vehicle, and check whether any required adapter is supported for that vehicle and charging network. For travel stops, AP/Edmunds advises using Level 3 fast charging and reserving slower Level 2 charging for longer stays; verify network access and compatibility on your route.

EPA says that if you do not need the full battery to reach your destination, stopping at 80% will likely be preferable. Some EVs can also precondition the battery before arrival at a DC fast charger when navigation is set appropriately; whether that feature is available and how it works depends on the vehicle.
How to interpret EV range and compare costs
EPA range is a comparison estimate, not a highway guarantee
The EPA’s official combined EV range figure weights test results at 55% city driving and 45% highway driving. It is a standardized comparison value, not a promise that you will cover that distance on a road trip. EPA describes its range estimates as general guidance for comparing vehicles; cold weather and other driving conditions affect the range you get. Check the specific vehicle and plan around the trip’s weather, terrain and highway speeds.

Use route-specific assumptions for energy costs
To compare an EV, hybrid and gas car fairly, use the same route and driving mix, current local electricity and fuel prices, and the specific vehicles’ relevant efficiency figures. Include whether you would charge at home or rely on public fast charging. A single trip comparison cannot establish a universal cost winner.

That dated example illustrates how driving mix affects a comparison; it is not a current model recommendation or a universal road-trip profile.

Those were prices used under that publication’s test conditions, not current national averages or durable cost figures. Replace them with local prices when estimating your own trip.

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is different from a conventional hybrid: it can charge from the grid for electric driving and use gasoline for longer travel. That flexibility may suit someone with home charging who wants electric driving for some trips but prefers gasoline refueling as a backup on longer routes. How much of your use happens on electricity depends on charging access and driving habits. AP/Edmunds’ examples and prices date to 2023, so they should not be treated as current shopping recommendations.

A practical checklist for choosing
- Choose a route and likely driving mix, then compare vehicles’ highway range or fuel economy for the specific model year and trim.
- For an EV or PHEV, check home charging access and map compatible public chargers along the route.
- Estimate range in the trip’s expected weather and terrain rather than treating the EPA combined figure as guaranteed highway distance.
- Decide how many stops you want and how long you are willing to spend refueling or charging.
- Compare fuel or electricity costs using current local prices, the same route assumptions and the charging method you expect to use.
- Check seating, luggage space and comfort against the people and gear traveling with you.
