Honda Marine’s U.S. lineup spans 2.3 to 350 hp for conventional outboards, with separate 40, 65, and 105 hp jet-drive models. That range is not a boat-size chart: start with the maximum horsepower permitted by your boat’s capacity or certification information, then verify that the exact engine fits its transom and intended use.

Honda’s U.S. model lineup is organized into the following groups. The ranges identify available model families; they do not say which horsepower is appropriate for a particular boat.

The conventional lineup therefore runs from a 2.3 hp portable model to a 350 hp high-power model. How to read the model families
The lineup is useful for establishing what Honda lists, not as a recommendation for a particular hull. A family such as BF25–30 or BF200–225–250 groups related horsepower choices; the range does not mean every value between the endpoints is necessarily an individual model. Honda’s navigation also names BF2.3, BF8–9.9, BF15–20, BF25–30, BF40–50, BF60/BFP60, BF75–90–100, BF115–140–150, BF200–225–250, M300, and BF350. When comparing a specific candidate, confirm its full model designation and specification rather than relying on a broad family label.
The categories also are not a ranking of which engine belongs on a particular boat. “Portable,” “mid-range,” and “high-power” describe Honda’s product groupings. They do not replace the boat’s capacity plate, manufacturer’s instructions, or the installation details for the engine. A small portable model such as the BF2.3 is an example of an offering, not proof that it will fit or suit every small boat.
How to choose horsepower for your boat
1. Find the boat’s maximum rating
Check the boat’s capacity or certification plate and the manufacturer’s specifications for its recommended maximum horsepower. Honda’s installation guidance says not to exceed that maximum. If you cannot find the rating, contact the boat’s manufacturer or dealer; do not try to infer a permitted horsepower from the boat’s length alone.

2. Treat Honda’s 80% guidance as a starting point
Honda’s installation manual states: “For most applications, the outboard motor should have a horsepower rating which provides 80% of the maximum recommended horsepower for the boat.” This is general guidance for most applications, not a replacement for the boat’s rating or a universal rule. Hull, load, intended use, and the boat maker’s recommendations still matter.
For example, if the boat’s documented maximum is 100 hp, 80% of that figure is 80 hp. That calculation illustrates the manual’s guidance; it does not establish that a particular 80 hp Honda model is available, suitable, or physically compatible with that boat. Check the actual model lineup, boat specifications, and installation requirements.

Use the calculation in the right order: first establish the boat’s rated maximum, then calculate 80% only as a reference point for a typical application. Do not reverse the process by choosing an engine from a number that seems desirable and then treating the 80% figure as permission to install it. The guidance is not an instruction to exceed a boat maker’s limits, and it does not promise a particular speed, acceleration, fuel use, or other performance result. The available lineup and installation information do not supply those boat-specific outcomes.

3. Confirm physical fit for the exact model
Horsepower alone does not identify a fitting engine. Check the exact model’s weight, shaft or transom requirements, and mounting instructions against the boat maker’s specifications. In practice, first establish which propulsion configuration the boat is designed or recommended to use. Then compare models within the appropriate category. Honda’s separate 40, 65, and 105 hp jet listings are not simply additional points in the conventional propeller range. Similar displayed horsepower does not show that the mounting, installation, or suitability is equivalent. If you are considering changing configuration, verify the boat maker’s recommendation and consult the exact engine documentation or a qualified dealer.
5. Apply the same checks to a repower
Before replacing an existing engine, establish the boat’s allowed horsepower and verify installation compatibility for the proposed model. For a concrete example, the BF2.3 is a small portable model in Honda’s lineup. Its size does not by itself make it suitable for any particular small boat: verify the boat’s permitted horsepower and the model’s physical compatibility.
Likewise, seeing a 350 hp model at the top of Honda’s conventional range does not make that engine appropriate for a boat that is rated for less. - Boat make, model, and year, if available.
- The maximum horsepower shown on the capacity or certification plate or in the boat maker’s specifications.
- Hull type and intended use, which inform whether the boat maker’s recommendations support the proposed engine.
