For the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado HD, the 6.6L Duramax is the choice for the highest towing ceiling and the strongest low-speed pulling force. The 6.6L gasoline V8 can handle substantial trailers and may be the better match when your loads are moderate or towing is occasional. Neither engine rating alone determines what a particular truck may legally or safely tow: cab, bed, drive, rear-wheel layout, wheels, GVWR, axle ratings, hitch equipment, trailer type and payload all change the answer.

2026 6.6 gas vs. Duramax: the numbers that matter first
Chevrolet pairs both engines with a 10-speed Allison automatic in its 2026 Silverado HD comparison. The gasoline engine produces less peak torque, while the Duramax produces substantially more and supports the highest available trailering rating. These are manufacturer specifications and maxima, not guarantees for every Silverado HD carrying the same engine.

Chevrolet labels these ratings for comparison purposes. Its product page states, “Maximum trailering ratings are intended for comparison purposes only.” The vehicle you are considering may have a lower rating because of its body style, drivetrain, wheels, GVWR, options or equipment. See the current 2026 Silverado HD specifications before treating either figure as attainable for a purchase.

What the extra Duramax torque changes when towing
Torque is the twisting force available at the crankshaft. A diesel’s much higher peak figure gives the truck more force available at low engine speed, which is useful when starting a heavy combination, climbing grades and maintaining speed without frequent downshifts. The Duramax also has a modest horsepower advantage, which helps at higher road speeds, but the 975 lb-ft figure is the most obvious difference in the specification sheet.
That does not mean every Duramax Silverado can tow more than every gas Silverado. A 2500 HD diesel in one cab-and-wheel combination can have a lower rating than a 3500 HD gas truck configured for a different hitch and GVWR. Ratings belong to the complete vehicle, not just the engine. Compare the row for the truck’s series, cab, bed, drive, wheel size, rear-axle layout, package and trailer connection.
How Chevrolet’s towing maximums should be read
The headline figures are not interchangeable with every trailer rating in the charts. Chevrolet publishes separate limits for conventional bumper-pull trailers and for fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailers. Hitch location changes the load path, and the permissible weight also changes with truck configuration.

The gasoline headline maximum is tied to a very specific 3500 HD Regular Cab Long Bed WT 2WD with a gooseneck hitch. A crew-cab, four-wheel-drive, single-rear-wheel or differently equipped truck should not be assumed to carry that same rating. The hitch itself must also be rated for the intended trailer.

Duramax maximum
The diesel headline maximum requires the 3500 HD Regular Cab Long Bed WT 2WD in dual-rear-wheel form, the Duramax, Chevrolet’s Max Trailering Package and a gooseneck hitch. A Duramax without those choices can have a substantially different rating, even though the engine output is unchanged.
Why the chart is more useful than the headline
Chevrolet warns buyers that “The trailering capacity of your specific vehicle may vary.” It also says, “The weight of passengers, cargo and options or accessories may reduce the amount you can trailer.” Those caveats are why the official 2026 Silverado 2500 HD Trailering Chart and 2026 Silverado 3500 HD Trailering Chart should be used with the vehicle label.
How much can a 6.6 gas Silverado tow?
There is no single gas-engine answer. In the 2026 charts, listed 2500 HD gasoline configurations reach as high as 16,000 lb for maximum conventional trailering. Listed 3500 HD gasoline configurations reach as high as 18,700 lb for conventional trailers. Those are chart examples, not a blanket rating for every gas truck.

For fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers, use the dedicated column and the row for the exact GVWR and configuration. A conventional rating cannot be substituted for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck rating. The hitch type also changes the amount of trailer weight pressing onto the truck, which directly affects payload and rear-axle loading.

What changes a gas rating?
- 2500 HD versus 3500 HD series.
- Regular, Double or Crew Cab and the selected bed length.
- 2WD or 4WD.
- Single-rear-wheel or dual-rear-wheel configuration on 3500 HD models.
- Wheel and tire selection, GVWR and installed trailering equipment.
- Conventional bumper-pull versus fifth-wheel or gooseneck connection.
Does the Duramax tow more than the gas 6.6?
At the top of Chevrolet’s available ratings, yes: the Duramax supports the higher ceiling. In the 2026 2500 HD conventional chart, listed Duramax configurations reach up to 20,000 lb when equipped with the Max Trailering Package. Without that package, listed diesel configurations include different limits such as 14,500, 17,900 and 18,500 lb, depending on wheel and cab, bed and drive combination.
The 3500 HD chart lists diesel conventional ratings up to 20,000 lb and also includes gas and diesel combinations whose limits depend on the exact row. The chart’s fifth-wheel and gooseneck values likewise depend on GVWR and configuration. Therefore, “Duramax” is a useful indicator of greater available capability, but it is not a substitute for reading the truck-specific table.
Payload is a separate limit from towing capacity
Payload is the weight carried by the truck itself. Count the driver and passengers, items in the bed or cab, dealer- or owner-installed accessories, and the trailer load transferred through the hitch. A conventional trailer contributes tongue weight; a fifth-wheel or gooseneck contributes pin or kingpin weight. The trailer’s entire mass is not placed on the truck, but its hitch load is.

Then subtract the people, cargo, accessories and hitch load you expect to carry. The remainder is the payload available for anything not yet counted. Check the rear-axle rating as well, because a fifth-wheel or gooseneck can place a large share of its load over the rear axle even when the truck’s total payload appears sufficient.

Illustrative payload calculation
Suppose a particular truck’s label shows 3,200 lb of available payload. If occupants total 600 lb, bed cargo totals 250 lb, accessories and hitch hardware total 150 lb, and the loaded trailer places 1,700 lb on the hitch, the arithmetic is:
3,200 − 600 − 250 − 150 − 1,700 = 500 lb remaining payload.
This is an illustration of the method, not a rating for a Silverado configuration. Use measured weights and the label on the truck you will actually drive. If the result is negative, the combination is overloaded even if the trailer’s total weight is below the published tow rating.

There is no universal gas-versus-diesel payload difference. Payload changes with engine, trim, cab, bed, drive, wheel and tire package, GVWR, rear-axle rating and accessories. The diesel powertrain may be part of a heavier or differently rated configuration, while a gas truck in another configuration may have a different label; neither engine should be declared the payload winner without comparing two specific vehicles.

For a purchase, request the door-jamb payload label or a build sheet for each candidate truck. Then compare the loaded occupants, cargo, hitch hardware and expected tongue or pin weight. The chart’s tow number answers only one question; the label and axle ratings answer whether the truck can carry the actual combination.

- Identify the trailer connection. Record whether the trailer is a conventional bumper-pull, fifth-wheel or gooseneck. Do not use a conventional column for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck.
- Use the trailer’s loaded weight. Include water, propane, batteries, tools, equipment and supplies. An empty or dry-weight brochure figure is not the operating weight.
- Estimate or measure hitch load. Use tongue weight for a conventional trailer and pin or kingpin weight for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck. A certified scale is preferable for a heavy combination.
- Identify the truck exactly. Note 2500 HD or 3500 HD, cab, bed, 2WD or 4WD, engine, wheel and tire size, SRW or DRW, GVWR and trailering package.
- Open the matching Chevrolet chart. Select the row with that exact configuration, then read the column for the trailer type. If a package is required, verify that it is installed rather than assuming it is included.
- Check the truck label. Subtract occupants, cargo, accessories and hitch load from the door-jamb payload rating.
- Check axle and hitch limits. Confirm the rear-axle rating, front-axle rating where applicable, receiver or gooseneck hitch rating, tires and wheels. The lowest applicable limit controls.
- Verify the paperwork. Compare the owner manual, certification label, build documentation and dealer information before purchase or towing. Resolve any mismatch before loading the trailer.
Conventional, fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing are not interchangeable
A conventional trailer attaches behind the rear axle through a receiver. A fifth-wheel or gooseneck attaches in or immediately ahead of the rear-axle area. Because the hitch loads the truck differently, Chevrolet publishes separate ratings and payload guidance for each type.
The gas headline example uses a gooseneck hitch, and so does the diesel headline example. That does not make a gooseneck hitch universally suitable: the trailer must be designed for that connection, the hitch must be correctly installed and rated, and the truck must have the required bed, axle and package configuration. A fifth-wheel trailer requires a compatible fifth-wheel hitch and the corresponding chart row.
What MPG does a 6.6 Duramax get while towing?
The 2026 Chevrolet HD information cited here does not publish a comparable EPA-estimated fuel-economy figure for the 6.6L gasoline V8 and 6.6L Duramax. Chevrolet’s Duramax vehicle page advertises an EPA-estimated highway figure for the Silverado 1500 3.0L diesel, while the HD listing emphasizes towing and payload. The 1500 number cannot be transferred to an HD truck or used to declare an HD fuel-economy winner.
Towing economy is especially sensitive to trailer size and shape, loaded weight, speed, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, traffic and driving style. Without a dated test that identifies those conditions and the exact truck, a numeric MPG promise would be misleading.
A responsible fuel-cost comparison
- Record verified fuel use for each exact candidate truck in comparable unloaded and towing conditions.
- Use the fuel prices you actually expect to pay in your region and the annual miles driven.
- Separate towing miles from ordinary commuting, because the trailer changes consumption dramatically.
- Include the possibility that your preferred configuration, fuel availability or operating pattern matters more than a theoretical MPG difference.
The available specifications do not establish a purchase-price or maintenance break-even point, so calculate one only after obtaining current truck prices, service costs and your own fuel data.
Which engine fits your use?
Choose the gas V8 when
- Your loaded trailer falls comfortably within the exact gas truck’s chart rating and payload allowance.
- You tow occasionally or your annual towing distance is limited.
- You prefer the specific gas truck’s cab, bed, drive or equipment combination.
- You do not need the diesel’s highest available trailer ceiling or extra low-speed torque.
Choose the Duramax when
- Your loaded fifth-wheel, gooseneck or conventional trailer approaches the upper part of the matching chart.
- You regularly start heavy loads on grades or travel routes where sustained pulling force is important.
- The exact diesel configuration provides the payload, axle capacity and hitch rating your trailer requires.
- You value additional margin in the engine’s rated torque and the availability of the highest towing configurations.
Do not select the diesel solely because its maximum is larger, or the gas engine solely because its headline rating appears adequate. A correctly configured truck with payload and axle margin is safer and more useful than a nominally stronger engine in the wrong body or hitch configuration.

- Front and rear axle ratings, tires and hitch ratings are within limits.
- Owner-manual instructions and certification-label figures agree with the dealer or build documentation.
- Any gooseneck or fifth-wheel hardware is compatible, correctly installed and rated for the trailer.
