What changed for the 2026 Mustang Mach-E?
Road & Track reported that the Mach-E’s front trunk, commonly called a frunk, became a $495 option for the 2026 model year. That makes the headline’s “extra $500” a rounded reference to the reported price, not a separate charge on every Mach-E.
Ford’s current U.S. 2026 Mustang Mach-E page describes the frunk as available, drainable storage that can hold cargo or be used as a cooler. The page does not show the $495 price in the material reviewed, so check the vehicle’s configuration and final pricing with Ford or a dealer.
Why did Ford make the frunk optional?
Road & Track quoted Ford Mach-E brand manager Teddy Ankeny explaining that Ford had learned customers were using the frunk less than the company originally expected. Ankeny said the company made it optional to preserve customer choice. Road & Track attributed the statement to a YouTube video posted by The Electric Duo:

“Yeah, so we were learning that customers were using their frunk, but perhaps not as much as we had originally intended,” Ankeny said. “And so, in order to kind of preserve that customer choice, we have made it optional for the 2026 model year.”
This is Ford’s stated rationale, not a published measure of how often all Mach-E owners use the feature. The available reporting does not quantify owner usage or establish that buyers broadly consider the frunk unnecessary.

How does the 2025 frunk change fit in?
Road & Track reported that frunk volume dropped from 4.7 cubic feet to 2.6 cubic feet for 2025, when Ford added a heat pump. Those capacity figures are Road & Track’s reporting; a Ford capacity specification was not available in the reviewed material. The figures provide context for the recent change, but do not establish why individual owners use—or decline to use—the space.

For a 2026 buyer, the practical decision is whether the frunk’s extra storage and potential cooler use are worth the reported $495 option price. It may suit someone who expects to use that front storage regularly; someone who does not need it can leave it off the configuration. Ford’s page describes possible uses, but the reviewed sources do not establish a capacity-based value judgment or a universally best choice.
