After Bahrain’s 2026 pre-season tests, expert commentary pointed to Mercedes and Ferrari as the teams to beat, with Red Bull and McLaren close enough to make a leading quartet. Haas looked capable of heading the midfield. The order below is an editorial forecast from the testing evidence—not an official ranking or a prediction of the season’s final standings.
How to read this ranking
This is a relative assessment of the teams’ apparent position immediately after Bahrain testing and before the opening race. It weighs expert commentary, reliability and running, and the limited clues about performance. It does not claim that test lap counts or a single fastest lap establish race pace. Teams ran different programs, and the 2026 technical package brought new car and energy-management questions.
The FIA publishes test session classifications, but those record times and laps rather than an official judgment of teams’ overall competitiveness. The FIA’s 18 February 2026 Formula 1 Commission statement also said refinements to the 2026 regulations had been agreed for referral to the World Motor Sport Council and that further energy-management checks would take place during the second Bahrain test.
2026 teams ranked by their post-Bahrain outlook
-
Mercedes
Mercedes emerged as the narrowest choice for the top spot because Formula1.com described a paddock consensus leaning its way, and McLaren team principal Andrea Stella grouped it with Ferrari as a team to beat. That is evidence of a small perceived edge, not a clear separation from the other leading contenders.

Ferrari
Ferrari was repeatedly placed alongside Mercedes at the front. Stella said the test confirmed that both “look like the teams to beat.” Ferrari’s quickest test lap needs context: Motorsport.com noted it came on softer tyres than rivals’ comparable efforts, while fuel loads and test programs were not known well enough to make lap times a clean comparison.
-
Red Bull
Red Bull looked close enough to the benchmark pair to belong in the leading group. Formula1.com reported that its new Red Bull Ford power unit impressed observers for reliability. The team completed 343 laps at Test 1 and 329 at Test 2, according to Formula1.com—a strong sign of running, but not proof of outright speed.
-
McLaren
McLaren also remained in the top-four conversation rather than establishing itself as the clear leader. Formula1.com reported 422 laps in the first Bahrain test and 395 in the second; Motorsport.com counted 817 across the double test. Formula1.com’s final-day analysis said the team appeared to be making progress in understanding its car. Piastri cautioned, “I wouldn’t say we’re leading the pack by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like we’re not too bad.”

-
Haas
Haas was the most credible pick to lead the midfield. Formula1.com described it as reliable and suggested it could be punching toward the top of that group. That makes fifth a reasoned forecast, not a measured gap to the four leading teams.

Alpine
Alpine was identified as one of the teams that could contend for midfield leadership. The available commentary does not establish a firm advantage over Haas or Racing Bulls, so its sixth-place position is particularly open to revision.
-
Racing Bulls
Racing Bulls was also part of the midfield-leadership discussion, though with less certainty in the expert picture than the leading quartet. Motorsport.com reported 734 laps across the double test. That total shows substantial running, but cannot by itself tell whether the car was faster than Alpine’s or Haas’s.

Williams
Williams faced a catch-up task after missing the Barcelona shakedown, then logged substantial mileage in Bahrain. Formula1.com reported that the car appeared to lack performance relative to rivals because of excess weight. The missed running and weight concern are reasons for caution, not evidence that Williams could not compete over a race distance.
-
Audi
Audi entered the season as a new operation, making it harder to separate the team’s eventual potential from the work of getting a new package prepared. Motorsport.com reported 711 laps across the Bahrain double test. The figure is useful operational context, not a basis for a definitive season-long placing.

Aston Martin
Aston Martin’s limited running and reliability problems left its underlying pace difficult to assess. Those operational issues were visible in testing; they do not settle the car’s design potential or prove where the team will finish once it can run consistently.

Cadillac
Cadillac was another operation facing the demands of establishing itself in the field. Motorsport.com reported 586 laps across the double test. That running count offers a measure of preparation, but there was not enough comparable evidence to turn it into a confident judgment of season-long competitiveness.
What Bahrain testing could—and could not—show
Mileage is evidence of preparation, not speed
McLaren’s 817 laps and Red Bull’s reported 343 laps at Test 1 plus 329 at Test 2 illustrate the value of running: teams can check reliability and learn how their cars behave. But mileage is not a pace ranking. Motorsport.com’s double-test totals for Mercedes (741), Ferrari (745), Racing Bulls (734), Audi (711) and Cadillac (586) likewise describe completed running, not finishing order.
Fastest laps need tyre and fuel context
A test lap is meaningful only alongside its conditions. Tyre compound, fuel load, track conditions and the purpose of the run affect the result; the sources do not provide a harmonized comparison that removes those differences. Motorsport.com specifically cautioned that Ferrari’s quickest lap used softer tyres than competitors’ efforts and that fuel-load uncertainty complicated comparisons.

Long runs are not automatically comparable either
Long-run pace can help indicate how a car performs over a stint, but only when tyre, fuel and run conditions are sufficiently alike. Teams followed different test programs, so apparent differences should not be read as a settled race-pace order.
The order could move quickly
Testing captured a snapshot during a new regulatory era, while teams expected rapid development. The opening races could change both the leading group and the midfield order. Andrea Stella urged people to “be careful” about predicting the pecking order from testing; his warning applies especially to close positions in this list.
