For a sporty six-cylinder E46, the 330i is the performance pick; the 325i is a capable alternative if price, power, or availability points that way. But there is no universally best year: the right choice is the best-documented, structurally sound car in the body style, market specification, and transmission you want. A facelift or newer build date is not a substitute for an inspection.
Which E46 model is the best buy?
Buyer guides favor the 330i as the strongest standard six-cylinder choice, while the 325i offers six-cylinder character with less power. These are performance-oriented recommendations, not evidence that one model is inherently more reliable than another. A neglected 330i is not a better buy than a well-maintained 325i.
| Model | Why consider it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 330i | Performance-oriented standard model; BMWBLOG calls it its preferred standard E46, and Classics World describes it as a “junior M3.” | Market-specific specification and condition; check the rear-subframe mounting areas and maintenance records. BMWBLOG buyer guide; Classics World buyer guide |
| 325i | A lower-output six-cylinder alternative described as capable and enjoyable. | Compare condition, history, equipment, and asking price with the specific 330i available to you. BMWBLOG buyer guide |
| 330i ZHP | A North American sport-oriented package; BMWBLOG describes it as a 2004–2006 offering. | Confirm the package and equipment on the individual car using its VIN and documentation. The cited guide describes a six-speed manual in its account; verify the specific car rather than assuming all market versions match. BMWBLOG buyer guide |
| M3 | A distinct high-performance model, not simply a trim level of the standard 3 Series. | Arrange a specialist inspection and M3-specific maintenance research; the standard-model buying comparisons here do not establish an M3 ranking. |
| Four-cylinder or diesel variants | May suit buyers prioritizing purchase cost, fuel use, or local availability. Classics World’s preference for petrol six-cylinders is a UK buyer-guide opinion, not a universal rule. | Assess the particular engine generation, service record, and local use. Do not apply one diesel failure concern to every diesel E46. Classics World buyer guide |
Power figures vary by market and rating convention. Classics World gives the UK-market 330i as 231 bhp and 325i as 189 bhp; BMWBLOG gives US-market figures of 230 hp and 184 hp respectively. Treat these as source-reported variant specifications, not directly interchangeable measurements. Classics World; BMWBLOG
How do E46 years and facelifts differ?
There is no single global facelift cutoff that identifies the “best year.” The following chronology is for the UK market; it should not be treated as an exact model-year guide for other markets.
#1 Best Overall
| Body style | UK timeline reported by Classics World |
|---|---|
| Saloon | On sale from September 1998; facelift in September 2001; replacement began in 2005. |
| Coupe | Arrived in 1998; facelift in March 2003; production continued beyond the saloon and Touring replacements. |
| Touring | Arrived in early 1999; facelift in September 2001; replacement began in 2005. |
| Convertible | Arrived in 1999/2000; facelift in March 2003; production continued beyond the saloon and Touring replacements. |
| Compact | Arrived in 2000; the cited timeline does not give a separate facelift date. |
In the UK engine range, the 323i was replaced by the 325i and the 328i by the 330i around late 2000. Body-style timing and engine availability differ across markets, so identify the car by its VIN/build information and local specification, not year or badge alone. Classics World E46 timeline and guide
A facelift can help distinguish styling and production periods, but it does not prove the car’s structure or maintenance condition. Inspect the individual vehicle rather than treating a later year as immune to known issues.
What should you inspect before buying?
Rear-subframe mounting areas
Check the rear-subframe mounting areas for cracks, and ask for credible documentation if reinforcement or repair work has been done. Carsniffer describes cracking around the mounting points and welded reinforcement repairs; BMWBLOG also flags cracking in earlier 330i examples. Neither account establishes that a particular year is immune. A specialist should assess the structure and any repairs. Carsniffer E46 buyer guide; BMWBLOG
Cooling system and service history
Look for records covering cooling-system care, and check engine-specific components and symptoms. The guides raise thermostat and water-pump concerns as ownership checks, not as a claim that every E46 needs immediate replacement. Confirm what was serviced, when, and whether the parts match that engine. Classics World; BMWBLOG

Gearbox behavior and maintenance
E46s were offered with manual, Steptronic automatic, and, on some variants, SMG transmissions. Classics World describes manual and Steptronic units as robust but notes that higher-mileage automatics benefit from fluid changes. Carsniffer highlights neglected automatic servicing, SMG behavior, and particular manual shift symptoms. Because the guides emphasize different concerns, test the individual gearbox and review its history rather than ruling out a transmission type categorically. Classics World; Carsniffer
Body, suspension, and electrical details
Tailor the inspection to the body style and equipment. Buyer-guide checklists include rust-prone areas, suspension bushes, front ball joints, window regulators, instrument-display pixels, and Touring tailgate wiring. These are inspection prompts, not estimates of how often faults occur. A BMW specialist can also account for engine, market, and modifications. Carsniffer; Classics World

Warning lights and diagnostics
If an engine warning light is on, a basic OBD code reader can help identify a possible fault, such as which coil pack may have failed. Confirm scanner compatibility and the diagnostic functions required for that specific car; a code is a starting point, not a complete diagnosis. Classics World

- Set your use case. Choose the body style—saloon, Touring, coupe, convertible, or Compact—and decide whether performance, purchase cost, fuel use, or practicality matters most.
- Compare like with like. Match market, engine, body style, and transmission before comparing badges or quoted specifications. Verify VIN/build information and equipment.
- Prioritize evidence of care. Review service records, cooling-system work, structural repair documentation, rust, and modifications. Ask a specialist to examine areas you cannot confidently assess.
- Test the specific car. Check gearbox behavior and symptoms during a drive, and investigate warning lights rather than assuming a model-year pattern explains them.
- Choose condition over a supposed ideal year. The available buyer guides identify issues to check but do not provide controlled reliability rates or a population-level ranking of E46 years.
Paul Wager, Group Editor at Classics World, wrote: “A well preserved E46 can still make for practical everyday transport and although the 330d was always a favourite back in the day, the backlash against diesel makes a petrol engine the sensible choice today.” This is his editorial opinion in a 18 January 2024 buyer guide, not a BMW statement or an independent fuel-economy finding.
